New computer file transfer help, please!

I just got a new computer, and I'm trying to get it hooked up to the Internet so that I can transfer files, update software, etc.

My ISP (PacBell DSL) software that I use on my old machine (Win98) is not compatible with WinME. I downloaded the new software on the old computer, with the thought that I could span-disk Zip it and move it over to the new computer. But, WinME doensn't like the floppies, saying "no files to extract."

Then I tried direct cable connection, also to no avail. WinME says that the port (LPT1) is not configured correctly, and then it stick at "initializing parallel cable on LPT1." Under the Device Manager, LPT1 is working properly.

Any ideas on how to get 5MB of stuff between the computers?? (one file is 3+ MB, so I couldn't just dump it on a floppy.)

Have you tried direct cable connection through a serial null modem cable? AFAIK, I've always done it through a serial port (ie. COM1) not the parallel port (LPT1).

One solution is to physically remove the hard drive from the old machine and put it into the new machine as a second/save drive, then just copy the files over.

The do this, you'll probably need to change the jumpering on the old drive so that it can be used as a slave. If you don't have the original documentation telling how to do so, try the drive manufacturer's web site.

When you finish, just reset the jumpers and put the drive back in the old machine.

Sure you can use RAR or Zip & select to span a file between floppies, that way you can span a 5 meg file onto 4 floppies & it reassembles them on the computer you copy to.

download.com might have other file splitters.
