View Full Version : What do the mods do all day?

Sorry about the title, but it was the only way I could think to phrase it. This is not a criticism, just curiosity.

There's no way this board has that many full time employees, so... um.. what do y'all do when your not wasting your time policing us idiots? How does that work exactly? Is xash sneaking off from some network administrator job to fix link problems on the SDMB? Does TubaDiva run off from the brass section of the philharmonic to smack posters in the head?

So what do y'all do besides this?

I do in-home computer repair. I also am a full-time caregiver.

In my spare time I'm a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a ham radio operator, and play keyboards and sing in a country/classic rock band.

We aren't employees, we're volunteers, and this is a sort of hobby for us.

Most of us are REALLY in it for the jackboots and the mod mugs that we get.

I'm an editor and writer, currently between "real" jobs, so freelancing and doing temp jobs (for the next couple months, copy-editing curricular materials for online HS classes) while I wait for the economy to improve.

And editing teemings, of course, though that is paid at exactly the same rate as my mod duties. No, wait, not as well -- I at least got a mug for my mod duties. :(

I'm a lawyer. I work as General Counsel for a group of mortgage banking companies. I also do freelance writing (paid), write staff reports and help with Teemings.

I'm a biologist, exhibition curator, and writer. I spend most of the day (when I'm not doing field research) writing. I check the board when I want to take a break, or in the evenings.

My profession is, and has always been, in my profile! I'm a full-time writer and editor in public television (print/marketing), a full-time mother to three children, and wife to a fairly self-sufficient husband. Yet, you wouldn't believe the laundry.

Yeah, I need one more thing to do.

I've always assumed that they spend their days polishing their jackboots.

These are some of the most obvious cover stories for superheroes I've seen in a good while. I mean, editor and writer doing freelance work until the economy picks up? In-home computer repair? These just scream super hero. They're the perfect description of a job you can easily run away from in the middle of the day if someone starts trying to take over the world.

It's either that you are all just billionaires with nothing better to do and have to pretend you're all just regular shmoes like us, inbetween cigars and sips of brandy of course.

I'm a freelance writer (23 books published), and I own a bookstore and a monthly alternative newspaper. Used to teach computer science, but I'm out of that now. I did a lot of work on closed captioning for the hearing-impaired, but that's down to consulting and expert witness work these days. Read all about me here (http://www.robson.org/gary/) if you're really interested.

I've always assumed that they spend their days polishing their jackboots.Whoa! Our jackboots are supposed to be polished? No wonder they make me sit in the back of the room at the meetings. I thought it was just because of the stinky cigars.

(It still owes me a quarter, too.)

As for me . . . I own a mansion and a yacht.

Not really.

As for me . . . I own a mansion and a yacht.Oh, yeah? Well, I just built a mansion *ON* my yacht. It's a big yacht. "Yacht" is a funny word. Type "yacht" a couple of times and it starts looking misspelled. Yacht yacht yacht.

I'll go away now.

Most days, I sit around on TubaDiva's yacht, sipping champagne, and chasing away the reporters from "SPY" magazine.

No, seriously, I mostly pace around in the padded cell until they let me out for my limited computer access time. I'm not allowed anything sharper than a rubber ball.

But what about the bribes and such? Do the Mods share with the Admins? Or is there some black market clandestine competition thing going on? (Jenny, you're chocolate is on the way. Please don't mail that letter.)

Do you guys have schedules? Work in shifts? Tag-team? Or do you more or less pop in to do your moddin' whenever it tickles your fancy? Do you have quotas you have to meet, like moderating for a certain number of hours a week or month or whatever?

No, there's no real schedule. We're on line when our schedules permit. If we are going to be off-line for an extended period, we let the other moderators know.

As for what I do all day, it depends on how long it takes me to gnaw through the restraints.

Need a consultant?

I'm currently at home with sick leave (broken leg) and my current job's contract runs out before my sick leave does, so I actually have no idea what I'm doing. But probably something else in IT. The wonderful thing about being in IT, at least in Norway, is that it's implicit that you're going to spend a certain percentage of your time online doing not exactly what you're supposed to. So I'm pretty free to pop in and have a look.

Why I do the job? Because your tears are delicious to me.

I can guess the thread you're thinking about. I've been in there and said to myself, "reply... or swig... reply... or swig?"...
"Screw it, I'll get into less trouble swigging. Fuck the reply!" :D

.... The wonderful thing about....IT

The wonderful thing about ITiggers, ITiggers are a wonderful thing!
Their tops are made out of rubber, their bottoms are made out of springs!

I'll leave the "tears are delicious to me" bit alone....

As a shop steward for Siberian Salt Mines (local #419) I'll be happy to give you a union card and a bottle of vodka to go with it.

Spammer hacked his account? A lousy spammer who forgot to include a link?

BTW, for those who didn't get my reference: Fenris a long time ago revealed the superhero origins of a lot of the staff. Someone pointed it out as one of their favorite threads, so I had a look. But I can't find it in search so y'all can read them.

Plus, I thought we might could get him to do the newer mods. Then again, since this is not his primary board anymore, maybe not.

Do you have quotas you have to meet, like moderating for a certain number of hours a week or month or whatever? My quota is a bribe a day. Hurry! There's only a few hours left to help me hit today's quota!

And more importantly, how do you look in a bikini?Finding out would scar you for life. I'm 6'4" tall, 270 pounds, and furry.
