View Full Version : When you talk to yourself in the mirror, how do you address yourself?
MeanOldLady

Don't pretend like you don't talk to yourself in the mirror, because I know you do!
I realized that I refer to myself in second person. "No, your hair doesn't look right styled that way." "Those earrings really look cute on you." "Dark blue is not your color." "Wow, that yellow concealer Diosa recommended really does make a difference! (Thanks, Diosa!)" etc. Then just last week I thought, "You? Who the hell are you talking to?" Myself, but not really. I'm talking to my reflection. I think....
Anyway, how's about you?

I really don't talk to myself in the mirror, but my internal dialogue is often in the second person too - especially when I'm mad at myself.

When I do something well, I tell myself, "I rock!" When I do something I don't like, I'm more likely to say, "You sure screwed that up."

MeanOldLady, you forgot to include the archaic forms for second person singular and plural.
I, for example, address my reflection as "Thou dost look most fine, oh puissant wizard!"

I do think about things but it's never in dialog format. It's kind of free form ideas. And I talk to the dog a lot. He's my sounding board. ;)
Ouija board.
And never an Ouija board! Don't you watch TV?? Nothing good ever comes from using an Ouija board! My house already has a ghost, I don't need to add demons to that...

I thought only crazy people and Sims talked to themselves in mirrors.Hey, did she just call you crazy? I think she did. No, she said she thought only crazy people talked to themselves in mirrors; she could be acknowledging that this previously held information is wrong. Yeah, do you think that's it? So what if she thinks you're crazy. Yeah, I'm not crazy. I'm sure other people talk to themselves, too. Hey, how do you know she's a she? I dunno, that's just the gender I assigned for some reason. Oh, okay. Cool.

I don't think I've ever talked to myself in a mirror. I have exclaimed things like, "Oh my god I look like shit today!" but that's just saying stuff out loud.
Not that I don't talk to myself. Just don't spend much time in front of mirrors is all.
MeanOldLady
05-28-2010, 02:28 PM
I don't either.
Just so we're clear, I don't get all "Taxi Driver" with it, but I tend to groom in front of the mirror, and typically I make commentary to myself on how I'm doing.

I voted second person, but I don't very often talk out loud to myself, in the mirror or otherwise. It's an internal dialogue unless I'm very pissed off and haranguing myself. Even if I actually think I look good (which is sadly rare), I don't tell me so out loud.

05-28-2010, 03:19 PM
nope, I don't
I can't recall ever talking to myself in a mirror specifically, but I do talk to myself all the time in general. Like, "okay, what do I have to do today? Well, I have to clean the kitchen, and return the DVDs to the library..." I find that saying it aloud helps me clarify my thoughts.

Talking about speaking out loud to yourself, I find that if I say something to myself out loud three times, I'm almost guaranteed to remember it (like Kyla's example - "Take dvds back. Take dvds back. Take dvds back."). Any ideas why this might work?

Oops, I hit the last one by accident. I meant first person plural, but really it could be that, second person, or first, depending on the situation. Come to think of it, it never involves talking to a mirror. Just internal dialogue.
MeanOldLady
05-28-2010, 06:10 PM
I was almost going to leave off third person plural as an option, because I'm certain no one does that, but you never know!
I ask about the mirror for a reason. Sometimes I think to myself or talk to myself, and I refer to myself in a way that's not worth noting, or one that I can't remember. Especially when thinking, there really is no thought that takes on a person form. Even if I'm thinking about myself, and I don't think I can explain this, I'm just thinking about me in a sort of conceptual way, but there is no "I" or "you" or anyone else. They're just thoughts kind of floating, and they're about me, but not. That didn't make any sense, did it?
There is internal dialogue at times, which can be first or second person, depending on which way the wind blows. Often I am speaking aloud when no one is around, as opposed to speaking to myself, and it'll be in first person. "Where the hell are my keys?!"
I've noticed, though, that particularly in front of the mirror, it is almost always second person. "That new lip gloss looks good on you," and the like.
Edit: If you did, how would you answer the poll? "Are you looking at me?" isn't really covered in the options. Ha! Error! Err-ror!

The only thing I've ever said while looking in the mirror, is to myself and not to my reflection and it's usually along the lines of "UGH, I look like crap today".
So I guess that counts as first person then?
I'm not sure where "What the H311 is that?" would fit in when talking to oneself in a mirror.

Usually, in my head, I visualize the scene as though I'm watching it as an observer.

You should have included the option "I don't talk to myself in the mirror." I don't.
I do talk to myself sometimes (because I'm all crazy and stuff), but never in front of a mirror. When I do talk to myself, I speak exactly like I would if I were speaking to someone who was standing right next to me. Except there's nobody there. But I'm still talking to myself, not an imaginary friend or something. I don't know how to explain it better than that. :P I'm speaking to myself, but I'm wording it as if I'm having a conversation with someone else.

I checked First Person Singular, but it's a bit weirder than that. Instead of the normal accusative "me", I for some reason use the Latin dative form "mihi", which is completely nonsensical.

You should have included the option "I don't talk to myself in the mirror." I don't.Why would I include that as an option if I'm interested in how people who do talk to themselves in front of the mirror address themselves?
You know, and I'm too lazy to start another poll on it, I'd be interested in knowing among those who talk to themselves in front of the mirror, do they address themselves differently when simply speaking aloud? It's usually first person when I'm sitting around and declare something aloud to myself. Just now, upon walking into the door, and realizing there's nothing fun to do here, "Eh, I should go to bed." Of course, I've now changed my mind and decided to putz around with my imaginary internet friends.

Maybe I voted wrong. In the mirror, I guess it's mostly first person. 'Damn my hair looks awful today.' 'Oh good, my hair is finally settling down.' 'I should probably be actually paying attention to taijitsu instead of thinking about my hair' That sort of thing.
I talk to myself in a mix of second and first person.

Why would I include that as an option if I'm interested in how people who do talk to themselves in front of the mirror address themselves? For the same reason that in polls about women there's often an "I'm a male" response. It's relevant and it would allow me to see the results without clicking elsewhere. :P
I'm always in second person, whether in the mirror or otherwise. I feel silly using it, and have tried to convert to first person.
When I'm talking about losing things, I usually address the thing as if it were real. "Keys, where are you?"
I have used third person plural though: I say "[You're] looking good. Let's go." It just makes sense since I've just used second person like there's someone else in the room. At least, it does in my twisted little head...

I don't often talk to myself in the mirror, but if I do it's a mix of 3rd Person singular or 3rd person plural depending on if I'm talking to me or talking about me and how the conversation is going (though I do just tend to address the person in the mirror as "You", but usually it's something like, "ToeJam, you... blah blah blah" or it might be "Jeez, Toejam, we really... blah blah blah." But I don't always put in my name there (though in the few times I do talk to myself in the mirror I'm more likely to use my name than not).
So I guess I had to vote for the Weirdest of the Weird Option.
I also have a constant internal narrator in my head (JD from Scrubs is one of the BEST examples I can think of as how it's like in my head, sans all the fantasies- but that constant "dead diary" sorta thinking).
I also do a few other things I probably do that's weird, as I realized in college at apparently not everyone thinks (like literally thinks, not just about ideas and such) the way I do.

I like the word "Dude". It has a universal application, like the word "Y'all".

I voted first person singular, but I really haven't addressed myself in the mirror much if ever. I've "talked to myself" out loud fairly extensively, but it's pretty much always in the form of a dialog with an unseen third party audience, God, devil, or whatever, rather than truly to myself.

I don't think I've ever talked to myself in the mirror. I've seen people do it in movies, but it's never crossed my mind to do it myself. What for?
ETA, I guess I do talk to myself sometimes, but not in the mirror. Usually I'm cussing myself about about something. I use second person -- "way to go, you stupid fuck. You broke it." Stuff like that.
The mirror? Not so much.

MeanOldLady
05-31-2010, 06:16 AM
I'm only in front of the mirror when grooming, so that would be when I'm talking to myself in front of it. I mainly talk out loud to myself as commentary on what's going on. "Jesus, it's hot," "I don't think I'm absent-minded, so much as my keys are sentient and are hiding from me," and so on. But while in front of the mirror, it changes from first person to second, as if my reflection is not me. "Don't bother flat ironing your hair today; it's too humid." Sometimes it's first person plural, or a combination of that and second ("You look good. Let's go"), but seldom first, which is how I typically talk to myself when not in front of the mirror.
I guess my OP and poll also should have asked if people refer to themselves differently in front of the mirror than they do at other times.

First, singular: I
First, plural: We
Second: You
Third, singular: He/She
Third, plural: They
Yeh, I don't think I've ever talked to myself in the mirror. It never occurred to me to take personal reflection so... Literally.
But when I'm having internal dialog it's mostly first-person, singular when I'm praising myself or ruminating over something, and second-person when I've fucked up and am admonishing myself.
