View Full Version : Prefer Friday or Monday off

I was talking to Coworker about this summers Holliday schedule. I was complaining that this is a year we are stuck with stupid Mondays instead of Fridays for the summer days off. She thought I was insane, and that a Friday is no better than a Monday off.
I say a Friday is much better. You get to enjoy a short work week, then a long weekend. The other way you can't really appreciate the short workweek because you know it is the longest possible time till another day off, and the week is filled with depression. Plus Friday are good and fun, and Mondays are just full of suck.
Have other people made this strong preference for Friday off?

I work four ten-hour shifts and picked Monday as the other day off, including Saturday and Sunday.

I've given this a lot of thought, and have to conclude that it doesn't matter either way. They are equally excellent days to have off. Mondays are indeed full of suck, so it's good to have that off, yet Fridays are fun and it's good to have a Friday off, especially if it's a payday Friday. They're equal to me. I'll just have to take them both off.
If I had my druthers, I'd have Wednesday off, because then you'd never have to work more than two days in a row, given the normal M-F workweek.

Monday, because you can have a week knowing that a 3 day weekend is coming, followed by a 3 day weekend, then a short work week. With Friday off the anticipation and the actual short work week are compessed into one.

It takes a half hour for me to prep for a party, and 24 hours to recover.
I'll take Monday, thank you.

I work Tuesday through Saturday, meaning my weekend is Sunday and Monday.
Honestly, I'd rather work Sunday through Thursday, but for whatever reason, our scheduling genius has about five times more people working my shift than the other. This isn't to say that they have all that many less people on Sundays, because plenty of other people get the even suckier shifts entailing two week days off and working BOTH weekend days.
That being said, there is something positive about having a regular week day off. I can do all sorts of business on my regular Mondays off that I would otherwise need to ask for time off to accomplish.

This is my thinking, too. Mondays off are the best. You get what feels like 2 holiday weeks out of 1 day off.

When I was on four day weeks, I chose Friday as my day off. It was nice, Friday being payday, and I could go out on a date with my hubby while the kids were in school. I would rather be at work on Mondays.

I picked Monday, because I hate Sunday nights and can't sleep knowing I have to start another work week. With Mondays off, you get a bonus weekend day. Everyone is going back to work but you can sleep in and slack off all day!

One of the best schedules I ever had was 4 days on, 2 days off. So my days off cycled through all the days of the week. One week I would have Sunday Monday off, the next week Saturday Sunday, the next week Friday Saturday. It was great because I generally prefer having weekdays off, but if you want to do things with other people you need weekends off. And I could mark my calender as far in advance as I wanted and see what days off I'd have.
My schedule now is best ever, though. Every Tuesday Wednesday off, and every other weekend off. When schedules were being set up they asked everyone to submit their "dream schedule." That's what I submitted and got!

Fridays are great. But it seems like taking Fridays off would make Mondays that much more of a bitch. Psychologically, Mondays are awful -- as far as a havetogetupandgotowork-day is concerned -- a better day to have off, imo.

Monday. I travel a lot by motorcycle and the traffic is usually better on Mondays than Fridays and the rushes are more predictable and more easily planned around.

In my job Friday is the day where if someone turns up at 5 minutes before closing up and needing 3 or 4 hours of work, you cant ask the person to come back tomorrow to be helped by someone else. Any other day you can do some preliminary work and have the rest followed up tomorrow, but the weekend is too big a delay.
Friday is not a popular day to work.

My experience so far is that Friday off sucks. Because Thursday's work bleeds into it, and I almost always end up going in for at least part of the day. There are many things which people are desperate to get done before the weekend. No one is desperate to complete something first thing on Monday.
Also, my friends and family are all working on Mondays, so I might actually get to schedule the time for something I want to do instead of what they have planned for me.
Not that I'm bitter. . .
The bad side would be when Monday is a holiday - I bet you'd get ripped off in that scenario. . .

I prefer Friday. If I have Monday off, I've already had two days off in a row going into it so I don't appreciate the idea that I'm not in the office as much. Friday off is better for me because I was just working four days in a row so I can appreciate having a day to relax before the weekend even hits.

Definitely Monday's off. Friday's the best day at work, everyone's a bit happier and there is less work done. Why take off the best day in the week when you can take off the worst?

This.
Wednesday.
This too. If I had my druthers I'd work 10 hours on Monday and Tuesday, be off on Wednesday, and 10 more on Thursday and Friday.

At my last job, I took Weds off. It never felt like I was working too much, having that day off in the middle. For the poll, I selected it doesn't really matter. On the left hand, Mondays are emotionally traumatizing, on the right, it's much easier to find someone to do things with Thursday evening or on Friday than it is Sunday evening or on Monday.

I also work Tuesday to Saturday, and for (Monday)holidays I get Tuesday as my (holiday) day off. Friday would blow because I would still have to go in on Saturday. I'd much rather have three consecutive days than one middle weekday off.

I said it doesn't matter, but now that I think of it, I prefer Monday. People at my work start leaving a little earlier on Fridays anyway, and I agree that a long weekend followed by a short week is almost like a double holiday.

I voted for Friday. That way I can head out after work on Thursday and grab a good camping spot for the weekend.

I'm in the "I'll Take Friday" camp. That gives me a chance to take the trash to the dump, load up the water toys with fuel, replenish all my fuel for the weekend, and get a couple of cases of beer in the fridge for the weekend.
I even sometimes get around to doing yard work on Friday, I just wouldn't bother on Monday.

In my job, which chiefly involves answering the phone, Mondays are a lot busier than Fridays, as a rule. They are therefore much the better day to take as holiday. All other arguments in favour of Friday (and a few do make some sense) are outweighed by this, plus you get all the previously mentioned benefits of Monday off.

I prefer Mondays. Friday already has a deserted feel to it, one that's giving the air to being off already, so why not save your day in place to make shorter work the following week?

Friday for me.

I'll just mention that many golf courses in my area treat Fridays-through-Sundays as weekend days and Mondays-through-Thursdays as weekdays. That means if you have Mondays off you get to play golf cheaper.
Then again, many of the barbers in my area are closed on Mondays, so if you have Mondays off you may get a little scraggy.
Of course, I'm retired so I have every day off.

As an inveterate idler and something of a connaisseur of the long weekend, I spend many a moment at work calculating how many of them I can squeeze out of my vacation entitlement.
Monday might seem like the obvious choice because, hey, Friday's practically a holiday already, right? Everybody's more laid back, people clock off early, etc. But I find that taking Friday off actually makes for the more satisfying, longer-feeling long weekend. If you instead take the Monday off, it just ends up feeling like a double Sunday. You still get that Sunday feeling on Sunday, and then you get it even worse on the Monday.
Whereas, if you take Friday off, the Friday feeling is simply amplified and moved back one day. There is no real downside.
I realise this sounds pretty irrational and is probably largely due to conditioning, but that's how it works for me.

I've taken single vacation days here and there to give me a long weekend. I much preferred Fridays. On Mondays, I guess just seeing everyone working, and the fact that it really was a Monday, was depressing.
But holidays on Monday don't bother me.

Monday holidays screw up my entire week. It takes me until at least Thursday afternoon to figure out what day it is...

I picked Mondays as better, because more people tend to take Fridays, making traffic worse on Thursday night and Sunday night for those going out of town.
However, if it's a Monday that EVERYONE has off, like Memorial Day or this year, the 4th of July, then there is no traffic offset and otherwise there is nothing intrinsically better about Monday than Friday.

I like Fridays off. It gives you the long weekend, and as others have said, if this is on a payday all that much better. I have a friend with direct deposit that (he says) hits his bank at midnight on Thursday, so he usually waits until after midnight to pay his bar tab. (I know, don't get me started.) Point is, we can hang out later on Thursday and still have all weekend to party with the rest of the get-along gang.
Football season not withstanding. Except for the fluke Thursday games on NFL network, I like to stay up late on Sundays to watch the last game of the night. This is usually preceded by drinking like a fish all day from the first kickoff. So if I can take Monday off, I don't have to show up to work hung over.
That all said, Wednesday is a good case too. Two short work periods of the man stickin' it to you before you get a reprieve from the grindstone.

I definitely prefer Fridays off. Fridays are generally slow at our office, and tend to drag. I would much rather start my weekend earlier.
Having Monday off means that my internal week calendar is off all week long, so I have the constant confusion of "what day is it again?"
Aside from that, Fridays off just feel better to me somehow.

Friday! Most people usually have to work on Monday, so even if you can stay up late on Sunday, most of my friends wouldn't be around.

I, personally, would love to have Fridays off. I love having a short week with the anticipation as opposed to having a long weekend and very little anticipation for the short week.
However, my husband is a chef. So if we're going to get days off together, it's gotta be a Monday off because there's no way my hubs is getting a Friday off.

Monday, because it is usually easier to get the Tuesday after a 3 day weekend off than a Friday before a 3 day weekend.
There are fewer miserable days at work than a Tuesday after a Sat/Sun/Mon 3 day weekend.

I prefer Monday off. It feels more like a bonus day off when it's tacked on to the end of the weekend.

There have been a few companies with a 12-hour Saturday and Sunday shift (24 hours work, 36 hours pay) and you get Monday to Friday off. Basically, I've spent my entire working career angling for one of those jobs.
As to the OP, gimme Monday off. Friday at work usually has a nice vibe. And lots of people disappear early or come back from lunch in a good mood. Some Friday afternoons I actually enjoy work. Gimme the Monday off.

Doesn't matter but if I had a choice (and a job!) I'd take Wednesdays off. It's the perfect day of the week to get things done, then I can enjoy the two day slide into a two day weekend.

I would definitely prefer Friday's off. I have found that more events happen on Thursday and Friday than on Sunday and Monday. But in the end, I guess I would prefer either. Any break is nice. :)

The way they do 10's around here, you have to work M-T-W-T and have Friday off, weekend off, Monday off, then work T-W-T-F, weekend off, M-T-W-T again.
I work 9-80's and have every other Friday off. I like Fridays off better than Mondays. It feels more "weekend-y".
