The SNL parody is kind of dumb, though - I mean, it doesn't need to be parodied. It does that quite well itself.

Before I saw Miracles, I had never seen an ICP music video or heard one of their, ah, songs. I had the idea they were some psycho metal group like Kiss or GWAR or something. When I saw it was a skinny little twerp and a dude bigger than John Goodman in face paint and singing corny-ass hiphop, I could not. Stop. Laughing.

Is this.... a joke? There are too many "motherfuckers" flying around for ICP to be reinventing themselves as..... christian music?
I don't get it.

Current theory is that ICP is trolling.
Since the whole basis of ICP is one giant troll, this is hardly a theory.

I used to listen to them in high school, mostly because my friends did. It takes a lot of songs before you really "get" what ICP is trying to do. They're not trying to be some death metal or gangster rap group, nor are they a comedy group, really.
What they're trying to be is fun. They use this persona of a gangster/metal group that talks about killing people, raping women, stealing, and practicing satanism but it's all juxtaposed with messages like "respect your elders", "isn't the universe mysterious?", and "give to charity and be nice to strangers".
Their message is "Don't take any of this seriously." That's what the clown make-up is about. They're trying to tell you that they're just goofing off. They're acting, and that none of it is real.
Have you ever seen a goth teen that mopes around, acting like they don't give a damn about anything, acting antisocial, but you know that deep down, they want to be asked to the school dance and they're worried about passing their SATs and they're saving up to buy their first car? In other words, they're normal?
That's ICP. They say to those kids "We're different! Look at us! We're weird! Haha, but not really. We're actually pretty normal." Isn't that what circus clowns do anyway?
Now what does that mean for their followers, the juggalos? Members of the posse, if you will? It means they belong to something that has no rules about how they behave, dress, or speak. Consider the lyrics to "What is a Juggalo?" (http://www.metrolyrics.com/what-is-a-juggalo-lyrics-insane-clown-posse.html)
What is a juggalo? A Juggalo. That's what it is. Well fuck if I know.

My oldest loves this band.
I have to say I'm quite fascinated about how the hierarchy works with this group. For instance, how does Twizted relate to this group? And why do some of them wear make up and others don't?
Do each of them write their own rhymes?

Just saw Coolio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolio) on a local news morning show showing off his New Juggalo tatoo, said he's signing with Psychopathic Records (http://www.psychopathicrecords.com/) for his next record.

Back in 1997, I was hanging out with a close friend, and he said let's go buy that new album that just got banned by Disney. I didn't know wtf he was talking about, but I had a car, so we drove to the record store and we each bought a copy of The Great Milenko (this was before Napster and before I or anyone I knew had a CD burner.)
I thought it was alright but a little out there, and I didn't like the whole clown theme at first. My friend immediately fell in love. To this day he follows them and their circle of other musical acts, watches their videos, buys their albums etc. He even has a Psychopathic hatchetman (http://www.swollenthumb.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/hatchetman.gif) tattooed right in the middle of his chest. A few other friends and I got into them too over the next few years but not to any extent near the way that one friend did.
So I've heard all their albums, been around a lot of juggaloes, been very close friends (still am to this day) with one very hardcore juggalo. They're funny, they're fun. It's all in good fun, really. The white trash juggaloes that catch so much heat on the internet seem to be a relatively recent phenomenon-- the last 6 to 8 years or so. We didn't know or see any of them back in the '90s, and all of them seem to be younger than us now. Maybe they were in Michigan all along, but I never saw them in the southeast or southwest until the last few years. Still don't see many of them, so, meh.
"Miracles" has some nuggets of sincerity but it is absolutely meant to be funny.
And, by the way, they've always been into God, if not explicitly Christian. Always. They've always been extremely anti-racist, too.
I recall one person ranting about juggaloes and saying how racist they were. I thought ":dubious::dubious::dubious: this person is just trying to get everyone on board with his/her juggalo hate."

ICP is the only group I can think of that can always make me laugh--they're just freaking hysterical. Well, Zappa makes me laugh too, but ICP is more over the top and goofy. Been listening to them for well over ten years now, and I don't get the hate unless the haters just don't get it, which is pretty likely.

Vera Lee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q--5gyasX3k) is my favorite off Bang Pow Boom. The song kind of sums up the "Other" or "Outsider" thing that ICP has really built their following around. They really appeal to the "dweeb sector", which many can relate too... At its heart Vera Lee is a nerd and "bad boy" lovesong, but also transcends to higher memetics- everybody really has their verily own Vera Lee. Or what was it in the seventies... their own Waterloo? It's a shout out to every nerdy or misfit teenager that goes unnoticed and is trampled and strangled by the sociopathy of American Society and High School.
I can really funk out to Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmNm2pFPeYY).

Having heard very little of their music, I just give them props for sticking with it. I used to see their ICP trailer thingy they'd apparently haul around to gigs, in Royal Oak (a Detroit suburb) pretty frequently in the 90s. And see ads for their shows, often at crappy little venues in the local rags.
Any artist who doesn't hit it (really) big, but sticks with it that long, deserves at least some credit.

So re the willful ignorance posture adopted in the "miracles" video, is it really all a big sophisticated meta-joke pose, or are the Juggalo fans just that brutally stupid that the "Fuck science!", "Yay miracles!" theme has a powerful resonance for them? Honestly in viewing vids of Juggalo fans I'm not betting on the sophistication angle.

The best line of the CNN article about this was as follows:
The assault subsided briefly when comedian Tom Green, who had performed earlier, diverted the crowd's attention with a dance.
I kinda wondered what happened to Tom Green. Now I know. Dancing for juggalos.
Apparently, I hear that after the stabbing, the juggalos stood in the way of the emergency vehicles to stop them from leaving. Go figure.
Rats: That was on purpose. They apparently did the same thing to Andrew WK. I'm guessing they counter-book some acts just so the crowd can abuse them.

The way I see it, it's either:
A) ICP is a genius act of satire which some people really "get" and enjoy; some people don't "get" and enjoy for face value thereby embracing the opposite message being sent; and which most sane people despise as trash.
or B) ICP is good-hearted (it's all explicitly anti-hate, anti-racist) but not deeply thought-out rage against injustice as seen by a couple two-bit rappers; which most people dismiss as trash, some people take at face value, and othr people read intricate messages into the way others read the future in tea leaves.
Actually, I lean more towards option A. But then again, I'm crazy and given to seeing things that aren't real so...but I still need to stick with A. :D I love ICP, but juggalos frighten me almost as much as christians.

In my days administrating a gaming website, many of our most serious cyber attackers had Juggalo- or Insane Clown Posse-themed usernames. I didn't know anything about the group (and didn't connect "Juggalo" and "Insane Clown Posse" with each other, either) but eventually treated any appearance of the terms as a warning flag that a bad person with ill intent was trying to hurt us.
I suppose it may be all in fun somewhere, but I have such a bad taste in my mouth from all the late nights spent struggling against hackers, malware purveyors, soreheads, and lying, mean-spirited losers with Juggalo or ICP identifiers that it's hard for me to consider them harmless.

You may have a point there. I recently read an interview of Violent J at the AV Club (http://www.avclub.com/articles/violent-j-of-insane-clown-posse,45406/) and it seemed to bounce a bit between "self efaciating, I get it" kind of stuff to more serious "Well they just don't understand us." Mostly he seemed like he was in on the joke, but then there's be a comment along the lines of "Our music has always been deep." Really? The rapping clown has deep, meaningful lyrics.
I'm not a fan of their music, but I did buy Stranglemania (http://www.amazon.com/Stranglemania-VHS-Icp/dp/6305550875) quite a while ago. I thought their commentary was pretty funny, but I still couldn't take them seriously. They seemed to be in on the joke on the video.

I guess you just either get it or you don't with ICP. If you've paid even passing attention to their career, them coming out as Christians was about as shocking as Rosie O'Donnell coming out as a lesbian. And of course most of what they say is a joke. Their attitudes are a joke. Their image is a joke. Don't be ridiculous.
I am absolutely not saying that they are geniuses, or anything to that extreme, but I do think that they're the type of artists that will get a lot more respect when people look back on their career, after it's all said and done. They won't be making any "worst band" lists in 30 years; people will look back and go "they were unique, enigmatic, and pretty goddamn funny."

Their attitudes are a joke. Their image is a joke. Don't be ridiculous.ICP snobbery is so funny. ;)
I get ICP just fine, which is why I considered the possibility they were joking in the first place.
It's not snobbery. I don't really consider myself a fan (although their first few albums have some songs that are fucking hilarious and I still enjoy to this day), but it's like . . . really? These guys dress up like clowns and talk about having sex with naked dead bitches and people are wondering if it's a joke or not. Really?

That's the pain of Poe's Law, man.

Is this month's Straight Dope hosting brought to you by Poe or something?
Poe's Law refers to godders, not evil clowns threatening to "chop your back off" while guzzling strawberry soda.

Poe's Law refers to godders, not evil clowns threatening to "chop your back off" while guzzling strawberry soda.Poe's Law points out that it is hard to tell parodies of fundamentalism (or, more generally, any crackpot theory) from the real thing, since they both seem equally insane.Evil clowns threatening to "chop your back off" while guzzling strawberry soda and claiming they're secretly instructing Juggalos in God's love...
Yeah, I can still see it being serious. It's not likely, but probable enough that it gave me pause.

I think that it is probably some high level trolling going on, as you suggested way back on page one of this thread.
But I still burn with curiosity.
1. Are the fans generally in on the joke
2. When they say "fuck a scientist" in the miracles song, is that a joke? I honestly can't tell. Harder to tell these things when you are pushing 40 and rapidly losing your cool, I guess.

The fans generally are the jokes.
The ICP is not actually advocating "chopping off" someone's back, no. But they really do consider themselves a Christian band from what I've heard.

It's not a joke; they are being 100% serious. Check out this article and interview in the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/oct/09/insane-clown-posse-christians-god

I hardly ever read the thread anymore, other than speed reading and skimming. But although the crux of that fairly new article is their supposed "Godlieness", well that shit is old news and played out- That's albums ago, and shit. That article gave a bit more candid view, and should be the focus... they believe in God, So what?
