View Full Version : Q: How do you take your coffee?
Count Blucher

My standard coffee at home was Folgers with Skim-plus milk and 2 blue packets, but I've recently decided that when my supply of blue gives out, I'm swtching to Splenda's yellow packets.
Sure, thats a pretty tame & boring revelation, but it makes me wonder:

I was perturbed this morning when I discovered that our lab manager failed to replenish the Sumatra blend (Peet's Brand) that I have become habituated to. The alternative is something disgusting called Major Dick or something like that. When I conveyed my disappointment, she mistook my request and prepared a new pot of coffee. Unfortunately, it was of the aforementioned execrable variety and therefore unpalatable.
In answer to your question, however, I take my coffee orally.
I prefer it unadulterated by any admixtures of other chemicals.

Coffee is one of my triggers, even decaf. I can manage an occasional cup or two, but every time I think that I can go back to drinking coffee on a daily basis, my innards let me know that they are unhappy. Very unhappy.
So I drink tea in the morning, with lots of sweetener and a little sugar, and with cream in it. Yes, cream. I know that one is supposed to put skim milk in tea, but I prefer cream. The type of tea varies, but it's usually one of Bigelow's varieties.
I take mine very strong with a bit of heavy cream, but unsweetened. I used to like it with sugar as well but weaned myself from that and now sweetened coffee tastes a bit nasty.

"Al Dente", according to my old roommates. ;-) I think it comes from being an Army brat, I drink it really quite extremely strong. And plain, nothing in it please.
I do not, however, like dark roasted coffees. I like a medium or medium-dark roast, with lots of chocolate and/or caramel notes. To my taste, most of the Starbucks beans are just burnt.

With milk and 1.5 teaspoons of sugar.*
My masculinity is not dependent on drinking my coffee "black". I like milk and sugar - why shouldn't I have some in my coffee?
* Unless I'm drinking Turkish coffee, in which case no milk, lots of sugar, and cardamon.

Seconded, though with the caveat that it depends on the type of coffee. If I'm brewing the coffee, it's super strong and a very dark roast with heavy cream, no sugar. If I have to drink office swill, it's black because I can't taste that it's coffee otherwise (it's very weak) - instead I'll just get the flavor of that nasty powdered creamer they provide here.

I like it like I like my women; strong, dark and bitter. OOhh I have some of that Kona coffee in the freezer, I should grind some up and put it through the french press.
I drink Larry's Beans (https://www.larrysbeans.com/store/), either 3 Moon Peru or Woodstock Morning Blend, with one Sweet & Low (pink), two cups/morning. If I run out of S&L, I drink it black. If I'm somewhere with crappy coffee, I'll add cream & real sugar.

It depends on which definition you're using. I use "black coffee" as you do -- to mean unadulterated coffee. However, I have come across another definition: simply coffee without dairy, which may or may not have sugar in it. It seems to me that both are acceptable.

Black. Strong.
I do make an exception for the coffee at work. It comes there in shitty little packets with an insulting brand name: "Superior Coffee". It's anything but. Hell, it's prison grade. They must cut it with sawdust. Sawdust that has been used to absorb oil spills in a garage. A dirty garage. That shit is foul. I'll usually toss in a packet of Equal just to be able to get it down.
It's bad enough that I keep a jar of generic instant coffee at my desk and use that most of the time. I'm a coffee snob, and the instant is shit, but it's a full order of magnitude better than the crap they stock in the breakroom at work.
But at any decent coffee shop I really enjoy the taste of well-brewed coffee. That I always take black.

My roommate and I buy a different flavor of creamer every month or so. We've gone through Italian Cream, Irish Cream, Pumpkin Spice, Creme Brulee, French Vanilla, etc. My favorite is the White Chocolate Macadamia Nut. Mmmmm...
We buy whole bean and grind it in the AM (ah, Seattle). I use the creamer and just a bit of extra sugar. Half and half is good when our creamer isn't available (i.e., I'm not at home).
When I was on a diet, I used to drink it black and splenda'd, but it would give me tummyaches. Now I use real sugar, and dairy (gasp), and my tummy likes it fine :)

A lot of people, including me, feel the same about Starbucks. Although I've discovered they can make good coffee without the over-roasted taste from their Americano espresso beans. Are you talking about the beans they sell or the coffee they have on "drip?"
The beans are pretty good and are available just about everywhere. The coffee they sell in a cup, isn't all that great even though they presumably use the same beans they sell to the super markets.

I was talking about coffee made in the Starbucks store. I once went in and wanted decaf but it was later in the day after they'd stopped making it (their regular stuff...I don't know what type of beans it's made from). They said they could use the Americano decaf which I understood was normally used for espresso. I think they just brewed it as an espresso and diluted it to regular coffee strength, and I thought it was much better than their regular Starbucks blend.

With cream and Splenda (2 packets).
The coffee itself is Trader Joe's Breakfast Blend, with the beans ground right before brewing. Keeping the beans whole until brewing makes a world of difference, IMHO: the flavor of ground coffee gradually leaches into the surrounding air. The same happens with beans, but much more slowly on account of much less surface area.

Not drip, never again. Ugh. French press is fine, but I have a nice espresso machine at home and actual coffee within stumbling distance - about half a block away.
Skinny flat white for breakfast. Doppio with an Equal any other time. Regular strong long black with two equals on cold days when I want hot liquid in volume (in other places, this might be called a strong Americano? Two shots on top of hot water, is what I mean.) Also, depends on the beans. Vittorio is just awful. Will drink most other of the Italians, though. Nothing organic. Coffee is organic by definition. I have yet to taste organic beans that tasted like anything I want to drink. Ugh.
I used to drink just whatever drip coffee awfulness I came across, but I spent two years working for an Italian coffee company and learned about coffee there. I'm not really a snob, there's great coffee everywhere around here, nothing I'm talking about is unusual. Drip coffee isn't the norm here and I'm glad of that.
And whee! Coffee loyalty card is full so I get a freebie in the morning!

The alternative is something disgusting called Major Dick or something like that. I think Major Dickison's is their generic "house" blend.
Playing off the Tim Horton's theme, I'm guessing I'd be asking for a double double yellow as I use Splenda instead of sugar.
There's been some controversy at work. The foodservice contract changed and the original coffee kiosk (can't remember the name) was replaced with Seattle's Best, which is nothing more than Starbucks trying to hide its foul self under a different name. People have been complaining.
The commissary's response: Douwe Egberts is available at the food court. DE is notable for two things - they're a foodservice business unit of Sara Lee and in 2007, they opposed fair trade. Other than that, DE is innocuous, bland brown water.
