In memory of my thread "Let's take it to a million posts!"(back when I was J. Noble) I am reminding everyone that we have almost reached 1,000,000 posts. Last I saw it was 993,298 posts. Less than ten thousand! It can be made within days! I'm not encouraging anyone to post here (but if you must...), but I think everyone should post faster anywhere! Then we really will be the teeming millions!

The OP is post # 1,078,609. We reached a million posts long ago in a thread titled "Good Morning Anthracite". Dropzone was the lucky poster honored with the millionth post. There are at least three other threads in which I have said "No, we already reached a million. See, your OP is post # blah, blah, blah". Search for them youselves if you don't buy it, but it's true. The reason that the number of posts is different here (http://www.boards.straightdope.com/sdmb) is because of deleted posts/threads. At the rate that various posts are deleted, the number on the forum index page may never reach 1,000,000. At least this is how I understand it. I suppose I could be wrong. In any case, we have in fact reached the one million mark. We are "officially" the Teeming Millions.

Here's a little tidbit to put it all in perspective:

If you spent just ten seconds per post for every post in here (and 11 seconds for mine because you'll want to savor them), one after the other with no break, it would take over 115 days to read everything we've written.

Well, it's not like "The Teeming Millions" refers to number of posts, or number of posters/members either. And if it did, we still have a ways to go to either millions of posts or millions of posters/members.
