View Full Version : Favre tells Vikings he's not coming back

Diogenes the Cynic

Brett Favre has reportedly told the Vikings (http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/99841644.html?elr=KArks:DCiUo3PD:3D_V_qD3L:c7cQKUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aU7DYaGEP7vDEh7P:DiUs) that he's actually going to retire this time. He says his ankle hasn't responded to surgery. An official announcement from Favre and a press conference from Brad Childress are expected later in the day.

I know it's Favre, and it doesn't necessarily mean he won't change his mind again, but I don't think he'd play this game this close to the start of the season. It's not like he needed the excuse to skip training camp. The team was perfectly willing to let him skip training camp already. I think the ankle just really hasn't come back, and he doesn't want to play if he can't run.

Looks like we're going to be back to watching Tavaris Jackson sail balls ten feet over Sidney Rice's head. :(

But you do have Sage Rosenfels, who you have to admit looks really good out there. When he's on the sidelines holding a clipboard.

Sage Rosenfels, baby! It looked like he was going to be the starter last year until Favre showed up. Represent Iowa State!

I don't see what the love is for TJack amongst the Viking coaching staff. I don't think there's a lot of love amongst the fans.

This brings the draft back in focus for me. My son and I were watching the first round, seeing Jimmy Claussen drop and drop with the Vikes' pick coming up, thinking the chance to grab a QB below his apparent pre-draft value would be a really good idea -- JUST for this eventuality. Heck, even if Favre did come back this year, it'd almost certainly only be for one season, which would be a pretty good learning opportunity for a rookie quarterback.

Instead, we have Toby Gearhart (who I do believe is a GREAT fit for the Vikings style) ... but TJack/Rosenfels/some UAB rookie taking snaps. Oh, well.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/nfl/08/03/favre.vikings.ap/index.html?eref=sihp

Allegedly, his ankle hasn't recovered sufficiently from surgery.

So, the question is: assuming that this report is accurate -- do you believe this is his final decision?

Personally, I'll *only* be convinced if it's November, and he still hasn't suited up for the Vikings. He's that damned indecisive, and that willing to let how he feels *today* color his decisions. What if his ankle feels better in a month?

Edit: Oops, didn't see the earlier thread. Will ask a moderator to merge or delete this one.

He must be upset that the media have been paying him relatively little attention so he's putting this out there to stir up drama and get his name in the media again.

I'm also certain that a fresh set of Wrangler commercials designed to portray Brett as the everyman, backyard football gunslinger are already in production to soothe his ego.

He really might have a bad ankle, you know. He's had three surgeries on it, he's 40 years old and his body has got to be beat to hell. That's the crazy thing. He's cried wolf so many times, nobody will believe him even if he's telling the truth, but it's not actually implausible that his ankle just isn't coming back after surgery this time.

I actually have no doubts that he has a bad ankle, and that it hurts like hell, and that he can't play on it. At this point in time.

The question, for me, is: what happens in a month, or two months, if his ankle improves? We don't know if it's something that's just been slow to heal from the surgery, or if it's more of a degenerative condition, that is simply not going to get any better than it is now.

If it's the latter, then the announcement makes sense. But, given everything that's come out of Favreville before today, if it *is* a degenerative condition, that's a big surprise.

If it's the former, then why didn't he just have the Vikings put him on the PUP list, or find some way that he could keep rehabbing it, rather than throw in the towel now?

Farve gets more grief than he deserves. Yeah, he's not real good at making permanent decisions that stick. He's also a no doubt HoF player, probably on his first ballot, and a decent human being. If he's played his last game, then he had a helluva run. If he's still got more in the tank, I'd like to see it.

It's funny to read things from Packers fans talking up the chances of a team that gave up 50+ points in the Wild Card loss, and has since had one of its better defensive players get suspended for the season. At least d-coordinators around the league haven't had a chance to figure out anything about Aaron Rodgers, right?

I think his deal is basically, he can play if he wants, and if he does, he gets paid. Otherwise, he doesn't get paid.

I also heard the "well, maybe he will play after all" thing on local sports radio this afternoon. As a betting man, I think I'd....bet on something else. He's either gonna play or he won't, and damned if I know either way.

I'll believe it when Week 1 comes and he's not suiting up. Until then, it's the usual dramafest. I would not be shocked if Wilf and Childress (aka Brett's bitch) fly down to Hattiesberg, throw more money at Brett and gives Brett's ego a nice massage with a happy ending and he decides to play after all.

Personally, I think he should come back to raise the hopes and dreams of Vikings fans once again, only to throw two stupid interceptions and have a fumble in a big game to help cost them a chance at the Super Bowl. I was actually worried last year that he'd actually developed beyond that, but I wouldn't mind seeing it happen yet again. To the Vikings that is.

Kare11's reporting that they've thrown another $7 million at him, on top of the $13 million he was already getting. Peter King puts odd on him joining the team in week 4 (like BottledBlondJeanie reported) after the bye. The first teams we play are also all playoff contenders, King surmises, so that coincidentally also gives Brett a chance to see whether the Vikings will be in the hunt as well before he rejoins.

I don't really care either way. Yes, I'd love to have him back. Without him, we've got serious issues at QB. But I'm also tired of the circus, tho' I think the Vikings are doing pretty well not calling too much attention to it.

Vikes fan here - I've been hoping that he'll come back, but I know the odds are slim that he'd be able to repeat his 2009 performance. He gave us our most enjoyable season since 1998 and for that I'm willing to cut him a lot of slack.

If he doesn't come back, well, it's going to suck watching Tarvaris bring all the talent around him down to his level. He'll get all the first-team reps this summer, so maybe he'll develop some chemistry with someone whose job it is to catch the ball.

I don't care when Favre announces what he's doing or how much the media covers it or how much all you Dopers bitch about all of it. All I care about is the 2-4* wins he'll add to our season total if he's our QB.

Dear Minnesota fans:

Gimme a break. You guys got him for free because he wanted to be a dick to GB. He retired to break his contract with the Jets, screwed them over, and then joined the vikings. The Jets had to trade for him, thus screwing themselves. All trades in the NFL is a matter of give and take to maintain some balance of power between teams. Look what happened to the NBA when the Lakers, Celtics, and Miami piled up the superstars without any compensation to other teams. Minnesota is a team built for the Superbowl, that is true. However, they didn't get there legitimately nor fairly. They got a Superbowl quarterback for free, and now you can't complain that he screwed you over royally just like how he screwed the Jets (although at least the Vikings got him for 2 years, the jets only got him for 1.)

Brett Farve is the only true "Maverick" allowed in the USA.
When he quits his job, he'll come back and finish it up the next year.

Favre said in his press conference today that this is really, really, truly his last season for reals and that there won't be any drama next year.

Personally, I'm betting on it happening when he's actually too injured to play. Or he'll get stoned by a crowd of angry fans or something. :D

I'm practically rooting for the Vikings to win the Super Bowl, just to get rid of the guy. (I would assume he's not so stupid as to not take the opportunity to retire a winner, like Elway. Then again, Elway came back one more year and repeated before retiring for good.)

I've never had anything against the Vikings, but i'm now rooting for them to go 0-16, and for the offensive line to collapse every game so that Favre ends up crushed on the ground time after time.

Death of Rats:

I think his plan is to retire and then sign a big contract with Chicago to continue the "Rub his Ass in the Packers Fans Faces by Playing for Hated Rivals Tour"

Are the Jets even on Packers fans' radar at all? One rival does not a "tour" make.

He did a year with the Jets because that was where the Packers could dump him. He signed with the Vikings to kick GB in the teeth.

Which is weird beyond belief when you go to Lambeau field and wander through the Packer Hall of Fame. There are (or were last year :) ) cases and exhibits waiting to be filled.

He's already said he'll go into the HOF as a Packer (as he should). I think by the time he actually goes in, the Green Bay fans will be ready to welcome him back. His grudge is against the management, not the fans.

Favre said in his press conference today that this is really, really, truly his last season for reals and that there won't be any drama next year.I'm taking all bets. Whoever's closest to the actual date and time of his arrival at training camp next year wins the jackpot. Over/under is the third day after the first pre-season game. Pick your reason; "sprained wrist" is at 8-1, "more time fishing" is 14-1, and "after the arraignment" is seeing a lot of action at 5-2.

I'm not really taking all bets.

Did anyone check his hands for crossed fingers? Did they make him say "no backsies" on camera?

It's like Groundhog Day. Favre has to keep playing his career ending game over and over until he can do it without throwing a pick that costs his team the game.

Compared to his previous performances of Hamlet, this one was relatively smooth.....EXCEPT for the blue-ribbon delegation that flew to Mississippi to spake unto the Favre. Don't they have phones?

He's already said he'll go into the HOF as a Packer (as he should). Which is odd, because the pro football Hall has only bronze busts of its members, not including any uniform parts. The official index includes all teams its members were associated with.

Or is he going to try retiring from baseball too?

In Mississippi? Really, you have to ask?

If take "sometime" to mean "any moment before the thermodynamic death of the universe" I agree.

Worse, he's going to unretire from baseball and then keep everyone guessing.

You know, if we murdered his entire family and dug up his farm he'd run out of things to say he's retiring to spend more time with.

I keed, I keed!

On the other hand, if somebody stuffed a baggie of coke in his pocket at a party we could probably get GMs to stop signing him.

They're still listed with "a" team, and portraits of them in that uniform are displayed on stage during their speeches.

ETA: Am I the only one who found it amusing that the Vikings sent all their white guys to talk him into coming back, and not one black guy? I mean, I can understand Longwell, because they played together in Green Bay for years, but not the others. As far as I can tell, only Jeff Dugan and the punter didn't get to go.
