So far-

Not nuts about Coach BalbrickerBieste, but Will and Sue in alliance is nice for an episode.

"I'd join in a kickass harmony but dude's naked."

Sunshine Corazon- awe-some.

Who was Matt?

I'm glad they're bringing out Mike Chang (Harry Shum) a bit. I'm not gay or anything but I would totally take a bath with him and sing.

My favorite line was Rachel's for a change instead of Brittany's:

It wasn't an active crackhouse!

Poor Artie.

Supposedly the new guy (the one played by Chord Overstreet) is going to be a love interest for Kurt. Of course that's such a terribly kept secret it might be an intentional false lead.

If they're being paid to sing on the show, doesn't that make them all professional singers by definition?

He'd make a nice contrast to Kurt's over-the-top flaming drama queenery. There are plenty of gay boys who are into sports and are basically the complete opposite of Kurt's stereotype. Finn inadvertently repeating Schuester's discovery was a nice touch (at least Finn had the courtesy to realize that staring at him naked in the shower was a little rude). :D

Really hilarious episode! Loved Finn's Cheerios tryout (Becky: "This is embarrassing") and the catfight between Quinn and Santana in the hall (Brittney: "Stop the violence!").

The funniest part was the opening video report by Jacob Ben-Isreal (Glee's Big Gay Summer), where Glee went a little meta:

Will: (about his song choices) I try to do something for everybody-- 25% showtunes, 25% hip hop, 25% classic rock,
Jacob: (to the camera) 100% Gay.

Jacob: (to Quinn) How has life changed since the birth of your bastard child?
Quinn: Well, I'm a lot less hormonal, so there's not going to be any crying.

Brittney: People thought I went on vacation, but actually I spent the summer lost in the sewers.

Jacob: (to Will) Did you know there's a forum on my blog that's begging you to stop rapping?
Will: Wait, the kids don't like it when I rap?
Jacob: (shakes his head)

Jacob: (following Kurt down the hall) When will you glee clubbers accept the fact that people hate you because they think you're nothing but a glorified karaoke club designed to make the inventors of autotune millions of dollars?

:D

"We fell in love at Asian camp."

"Hillbillies trying to impregnate the tailpipe of a parked Chevy."

I have to say the music this week didn't do much for me. I was surprised that Sue played a bogus "bad touch" card as even for her that's low.

"Do you really have to have two confetti cannons?"
"Do your children really have to have a daddy?"

Do you guys believe that Rachel really sabotaged Sunshine for the good of the group? Of course I didn't believe her at first, but it'd be odd to sing a song about "doing it for love" when it was a solo with no one around her.

Either way I'm disappointed that Sunshine will not be there this year, I really wanted to hear more from her.

I didn't feel bad for Beist or whatever. The first time she met Will and Sue she went off on how important the football team was, and didn't seem sorry at all the other's budget got cut.

In part, but I think she was honest that mainly it was her love of the spotlight.

Either way I'm disappointed that Sunshine will not be there this year, I really wanted to hear more from her.

I'm pretty sure you will. That was Cheyenne Jackson (Broadway star and recurring actor on 30 Rock) who played the new star of Vocal Adrenoline- he's going to be a recurring character so I'm pretty sure Sunshine will as well.

Yeah, she did seem to be sort of "can dish it out/can't take it". Buying the pizzas was a very nice thing, I'll give her that. If I were writing the show she'd be a loose cannon: one episode may see her alligned with Will against Sue, another with Sue and her against Will, another will her and Figgins against Will and Sue, etc..

I can't wait for Carol Burnett's guest appearance as Sue's mom. I hope she sings.

Glee went a little meta:

Yeah, I started feeling a little bad for the *actors*. There was that stuff with the new guy's mouth too.

I didn't feel bad for Beist or whatever. The first time she met Will and Sue she went off on how important the football team was, and didn't seem sorry at all the other's budget got cut.

Agreed. They went overboard, but when she complained, Will should have said "I'm sorry, on the other hand, you were a real bitch to us when we first met you - not the best way to make friends."

A Broadway star isn't a professional singer, and some cheeseball with a self-released CD is?

FTR, the kid who plays Artie was in some kind of boy band -- Lea Michelle and Matthew Morrison have had lead roles in Broadway shows. More of their guest stars are from Broadway (or at least last season's guest stars had been), since those are the people who tend to have acting skills in addition.

A Broadway star isn't a professional singer, and some cheeseball with a self-released CD is?

:dubious: Right back at ya. My point was that was needless nitpicking. I didn't get the impression that they were implying that Glee castmembers are somehow unprofessional, but rather that the guest star was a celebrity from the music recording world. That was clear from context, and there was no point in twisting the phrase to imply something else.

I'm sure the producers will be happy to know that their celebrity guest stars are unappreciated, because the castmembers are all famous enough.

I liked the coach's non-sequiturs, though I only remember "You're all coffee no omelette". I get the feeling they haven't decided yet whether to make the coach sympathetic or evil.

Was Emma on the show last night? Nothing personal against the actress but I wouldn't mind her character being scrapped. (Maybe she could realize she really did love the old coach and they could marry and adopt Matt.)

She was, but she also got a lot of sympathetic airtime with the whole mom issue, and she wound up with The Guy She Wanted (though I dunno why she wanted him, Noah is like 3000% hotter).

She's been set up as The Main Character, and it's unusual for The Main Character to be portrayed so very unsympathetically.

I wonder if Finn and Rachel are having sex.

A nitpick, but I don't think Puck would be legally able to get a vaesectomy since

1- He's a minor
2- He doesn't have a child (well, technically he does, but it was adopted at birth- some states have laws that a man can't have a vaesectomy until he has had a child UNLESS he or his wife carries the genes for a debilitating illness or his wife's health would be compromised by pregnancy)
3- He doesn't have the genes for a debilitating illness or a wife

But, Ohio laws could be different I suppose with a parent's consent (which his mother would probably give after Quinn).

A friend mentioned that he was irritated by the excessive lipstick or lip gloss on Chord Overstreet (aka "the new guy"). I didn't notice it; did anybody else?

She was, but she also got a lot of sympathetic airtime with the whole mom issue, and she wound up with The Guy She Wanted (though I dunno why she wanted him, Noah is like 3000% hotter).

No argument on the hotter part, but he's also a selfish immature (even for a high school student) philandering douche.

Being on the other end of the spectrum, I'm hesitant to comment negatively on someone's weight, but I do think she looked nicer before, and that she seems to have fallen into the Hollywood "you must be approaching anorexia to be beautiful" standard. Or, maybe she decided to go vegan for ethical reasons and happens to have lost some weight and is happy and healthy. It's possible.

I didn't think Rachel was too skinny; however, her orange old lady knees squicked me out.

I wasn't a fan of the music. Charice (Sunshine) would have been a nice addition, and Chord Overstreet (Sam) gives the tweens and teens more to drool over. TheKid went into total drool mode when he appeared on screen. FWIW, I don't think he was wearing lipstick/gloss, I think he's just one of those people with very distinct lip coloring. When I was singing in choirs, my coach insisted women should never wear shorter than below the knee skirts to auditions, because it divided the body in a bad place. Also, knees are not the best feature of anyone's body. Really, if your kness are your most attractive feature, you should stay indoors and talk to strangers on the interrnet.

If my life were a sitcom this is where the fantasy sequence would start- and hopefully would last for the next season.

I'm not familiar with Chord Overstreet other than last night. He looks a bit like a Culkin brother. I did read an interview where he said his name came from his father who's a songwriter and gave several of his kids musical names. (If I were him I'd be damned grateful dad wasn't a gynecologist.) He won't answer whether he's going to be Kurt's love interest, though he does say he himself is straight.

This episode felt really disjointed to me - I didn't get a good feeling for where they were going, or what they were trying to do at all. I did love a few moments, though (usually Sue's) - like her coming into the bathroom to yell "SHUT UP!" at them. Sue's having a problem getting the measure of Coach Beist - interesting.

It was also interesting to hear Sue talking about how much she loved staring at Santana's juicy new chestfruits (especially given Jane Lynch's being well out of the closet). :D

A bit of a scattershot episode... I wasn't thrilled with any of the songs. They did them well enough, I suppose, but they didn't knock my socks off. So many little plot threads that none of them got developed real well.

I did like the addition of Bieste (are my wife and I the only ones who at first thought that Coach Tanaka had a sex change over the summer?) though I would've have preferred to see Sue and Will with a common enemy for a bit longer before it went back to Sue vs. Will.

Loved seeing Sue get a taste of her own non-sequitur medicine. ("That doesn't make sense.")

Lots of good one-liners as usual, especially Britney lost in the sewers.

Sad to see Matt go without ever really having a role to speak of. But at least "Other Asian" is getting some lines. (Poor Artie, but he was kind of a bad boyfriend. "woman" ?)

What's with all these transfer and foreign exchange students? Aren't there any freshmen to recruit?

I haven't seen this episode yet, though I am well and truly spoiled and don't care. However, EW reported (http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/09/20/glee-kurt-boyfriend-armchair-casting/) Monday that " casting call went out late last week for the recurring role of a cute, charismatic, GAY high school junior who fronts a competing glee club," and presumably this character is Kurt's interest. I do remember hearing that he wouldn't be a student at McKinley. Of course, it could just be a dodge and this "Chord Overstreet" (again, haven't seen it) could be the bona fide -- or maybe there will be competition for Kurt's attention!

Sorry, wrong word use.

I always assumed Tina was somehow related to Mike since they're both named Chang (Mike Chang & Tina Cohen-Chang). I guess not. I wonder if they were supposed to be relatives but the writers changed their minds.

Granted, Chang isn't an unusual Chinese surname, but I would guess it's a really unusual Lima, Ohio surname.

I thought Biest was gonna turn out to be Ken with a sex change for a second.

And the new kid can't be Kurt's love interest, he doesn't put balls in his mouth. :p

Finally, did the writers just forget after the beginning of the second half of last season that Finn's also on the basketball team? They only really brought it up once, and now he's all "I'm nothing but a glee club geek now". Sure it's not basketball season now, but it still doesn't make sense for him to forget that he's on that team, unless the writers also forgot.

Poor Artie.
Indeed, that was painful. Tina seemed like the only person he really connected with. That and I thought her reasons for breaking up, though understandable, just highlighted the issues he has with his disability.

Was Emma on the show last night? Nothing personal against the actress but I wouldn't mind her character being scrapped.
BLASPHEMY!!!

(are my wife and I the only ones who at first thought that Coach Tanaka had a sex change over the summer?)

I swear that when I first caught a glimpse of Coach Biest on screen, I thought it was Coach Tanaka in drag.

I was firmly in this camp too, until checking out IMDB. Even told my wife my suspicions. Oh well, not the first time I've been wrong in front of her...

I didn't think it was Tanaka, but I did think it was a man in drag. Nope (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1555602688/nm0427963). (She's actually quite pretty - the costume and makeup people on Glee really uglify her for the role.)

...He does have a complicated relationship with Kurt (common-law stepbrother crush? Does Emma have a pamphlet about that?) If anyone pings my (albeit barely functional 'dar), it's Puck...

I kinda wish the writers would make either Finn or Puck bisexual; it'd open up a bunch of potential scenarios and allow for some really complicated love triangles (or love squares or circles).

...I keep expecting his mom to confess that he's illegitimate and the dad he never knew who died in service is made up.

Didn't he mention last season that his father died in the Gulf War? :dubious: Seeing as how he's only supposed to be 16/17 that's either a big goof on the writer's part, or a potential plot point (like Finn realizes when the Gulf War actually ended).

I hate the synthethic sound of the songs on "Glee." It's like listening to Katy Perry for an hour. And that's not a good thing.

Maybe Finn's dad was killed in action in Somalia?

I'm impressed by Will's ability to not quit (Yes, I know it's scripted etc). If I were in his position I would have given up a long time ago.

Did anybody else think Rachel has had some lip work done? She had this awful trout pout thing going on during her song... urgh. Also, too thin.

Not loving the bangs, but she didn't seem too thin. Only watched it once though, and was really distracted by bang dislike to notice anything else.

If John Barrowman ever shows up on this show, he's going to play Kurt's real dad. They look and act way too similar for this to not happen. Make it so!

Yes, I thought the same thing. It was like a giant caterpillar was crawling around just under her nose. YUCK.

says he died in Desert Storm, so yeah, the timeline is quite fishy. I'd suggest that Finn just got held back a few times and is 20, but I'm pretty sure they said something about him being 16, and that's what the profile on the page says.

Probably just some writer goofed and thought the Gulf War was later than it was.

Perhaps it's been edited since your post: The current version of the relevant line reads "Finn's father died while on army duties in the Middle East, so his mother raised him doing the best she could."

It does say that but it also says, "It is revealed that Finn is the son of single mother, as his father was killed in Operation Desert Storm when he was very young."

Yeah, you need to read down a little to get the Desert Storm part.

I just watched the first couple episodes again, and yeah, Finn says that his dad died in the First Gulf War, when he was just a little kid. Per Wiki, that war ended in February 1991, which would put Finn at a minimum of age 19 in 2010. However, last season he said he was 16.

Also, he gives Quinn his old blanket, which he says was his last gift from his father, that he carried it around everywhere etc. I'm thinking that means he was 2 or 3 then when his father died, putting him at 21 or 22 in 2010.

Definitely a goof on the writers' part.
