View Full Version : Question about links.

In this topic (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=580240) (and damn near every other on this board), the link inside (to another topic) opens the topic in a new tab (which is how I like it).
However, in this topic (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=580460), when I click on the link, it redirects to it in the same tab.
Why is this? I thought that something was off with my computer at first, but that's the only topic that has a link open in the same tab. I tried about 10 other topics that had links and every one opens the link in a new tab. That one doesn't.
ETA: I'm using Google Chrome, if it matters.

The second one opened in a new tab for me. I'm also using Google Chrome.

Hm, Well, just so I know, how does one modify it (in Chrome) to have clicked links open in a new tab rather than the same one?
I guess I could try playing around with it, although it seems to already work fine for every topic but that one.
Thanks for weighing in with what it's like for you.

I'm going to try to post the topic link in that second topic in here, myself, and then click on it and see what it does.
ETA: Now that, above, opened up in a new tab. But in the original topic, it doesn't.
Very weird...but I guess not that important to worry about. Just something that stuck me as odd.

I'm having the same thing happen. The links in the second linked thread open in the current tab rather than launching a new one.
I guess it could be a difference between a link to a thread (as Skald did) and a link to a specific post (as Hypnogogic Jerk did).

Thank you. It's always nice having it be confirmed it's not just you.

That means, sadly, it might just be us.

If you click the Quote button in each post, you can see how the links are tagged. In the first thread you linked to ("Dear beowulff"), the links were created with the [URL] tag. In the second thread ("md2000"), the links were created with the [thread] and [post] tags.
Since you later used the [URL] tag to the "Candians and doughnuts", you got a different result than Hypnagogic Jerk.

Ahhhh, okay, there's the difference. Thank you, milquetoast.
I had no idea a [thread] tag existed.

Something else I just noticed: If you hover over a link that uses either the [thread] or [post] tag, you get a little popup specifying the thread or post number. This does not happen when using the [URL] tag.
At least that's the case with Firefox.
