Really Not All That Bright

So, I have an embarrassment of QB matchup riches in the HHM league this week. Eli Manning against the Cowboys, or David Garrard against the equally woeful Texans?
I'm leaning towards Garrard now that Wade has been fired, because players always step up a little in the first couple of weeks after a head coach gets fired - but I drafted Eli to be my #1.
Thoughts?

Gotta be Eli. He absolutely tore apart the Cowboys a few weeks ago. I'll bet he does it again.

So here's my attempt to drag this thread back to life.
What I Need To Fill: One WR/TE flex and one WR/RB flex
These four guys are my options:
-- Mike Williams (WR, SEA)
-- Nate Burleson (WR, DET) - who has been on a bit of the tear the last few weeks
-- Mike Goodson (RB, CAR) - getting the start this weekend
-- Brandon Jacobs (RB, NYG)
I've also got Willis McGahee (RB, BAL) and Deion Branch (WR, NE), but I'm seriously considering either.
So who do I start? Yahoo says Goodson and Williams but we all know how accurate the Yahoo projected scores are.

A few questions.
1.) My kicker, Stephen Gostkowski (NE) is out for the season. Is Rob Bironas (TEN) a good sub? David Akers (PHI), Graham Gano (WAS), and Billy Cundiff (BAL) are also available, but Bironas is seems the best and his offense gives him plenty of shots. ETA: Garrett Hartley (NO) is also available, but this is his by, so I'd wait until next week to pick him up.
2.) Pick 2- LeGarrette Blount v CAR, Cedric Benson @ IND, Matt Forte v MIN
3.) Pick 2- Vernon Davis v StL, Deion Branch @ PIT, Steve Smith (CAR) @ TB, Steve Smith (NYG) v DAL
I'm assuming NYG Smith considering who he's up against. I also lean towards Davis, since he's probably the best of the remaining 3 and StL is the worst of the remaining opponents.
For RB, I think its Blount and Benson because of the run defenses they're up against.

Williams, Jacobs. Check on Jacobs' availability because he's got the flu.

Blount is a must start. Might end up piling up tons of carries in a blowout at home. Benson will also get a ton of carries this week - the Colts are every bit as bad against the run as they are good against the pass.
Davis and Smith 2.0 are your receiving guys, though you might get an unfortunate surprise from Davis since Troy Smith hasn't thrown to him yet.

As much as I love my Colts and Mathis & Freeny, part of having an adult view of love is realizing shortcomings. I've come to terms with our crappy ground defense. ;)
I'm hoping Davis can be a go-to guy when Troy Smith is in trouble since he's probably the most reliable option out there*. Also, Troy isn't too bad a QB. My expectations are no lower than with Alex Smith, considering all the problems.
*The London game was a bad example since Davis got hurt early, but I think my theory holds water.

I picked up Favre last week as both my QBs were on byes. He saved my ass (against AZs def), but I don't have much faith in him. So - Favre vs Chi, Bradford vs SF or Orton vs KC? I really need a monster game to have a chance - a steady 12-14 pts will probably sink me. Who has the greatest potential to go off? Or get blown out? Slop yrds at the end count just the same. Yahoo and ESPN say Orton, but them bringing in Tebow near the goal line is scaring me. All 3 defs are bunched around the middle in pass defense.
I need a Hail Mary WR off the waiver wire. I picked up Blair White due to Collie's injury. Anyone else that might get some looks due to injury? It's a pretty deep league so there isn't much there (I can't list everyone available so use your imagination as to who might be overlooked). Crayton, Cotchery and Carolina Smith were all recently waived and Nate Burleson is available.

Aurelious Benn is finally getting involved in the offense in Tampa. If it's not a keeper league he's probably available.

I'm in the process of trading Tomlinson and Colston for Frank Gore and while still pretty confident in my reasoning, I'm starting to have a little buyer's remorse.
Thoughts?

11-13-2010, 09:47 AM
My reasoning:
Gore is pretty consistent (averaging 14.6 points per game) because he is the best player SF has, catches a lot of passes (top 3 among RBs in receptions and yards) and has an inexperienced QB, which means reliance on the run game and dump-off, check-down passes. He's the 6th highest fantasy point scoring RB in the NFL so far... and coupled with McFadden, it would give me two guys in the top 6 for the stretch run.
Plus, his schedule going forward is pretty advantageous, especially playoffs (Sea, SD in week 1; StL, Ari in week 2) and the 49ers will have something to play for, even if it is just pride and/or the spoiler role.
On the other hand, Tomlinson has been slipping (expected) and Shonn Greene has been getting more carries and producing with them. His schedule is rougher, and though the Jets look like they'll not be resting starters at the end of the season, their playoff schedule is pretty brutal (Mia, Pitt week 1; Chi, Buff in week 2).
Colston is one weapon among many in an inconsistent offense. He's been getting more targets lately, but these things with the Saints seem to go in cycles as one guy starts to break out defenses key on them and then the next guy steps up.
Throw in that the guy I'm trading with isn't in my division, we don't play again this year, he isn't much of a threat to even make the playoffs (he's 3-6), and that he plays one of the guys 1 GB me in the standings in my division in the last week of the regular season, and I thought it was a good deal to offer.

You made a good trade if you can replace Colston's production reasonably well. Gore's production is less likely to drop off and he has a better playoff schedule.

I picked up Sidney Rice in anticipation of his being able to do that, but the jury is out on that one yet.

Would you guys start Randy Moss over Davone Bess, Braylon Edwards, or Johnny Knox in a half ppr league?

All. Unless you're fairly certain of winning and just need to guarantee yourself a few points, in which case I'd start Knox over him.
I'd steer clear of Bess this week in particular. No idea who Pennington will be looking for (though I'm guessing Fasano is in for a strong week).
Moss won't have learned the whole Titans playbook yet, so he'll probably just be running go and post routes all day. That's fine, because VY can only throw the ball deep anyway.

Collins will be playing, but I don't think that hurts. I just wonder if he's gonna play with a chip on his shoulder or just say fuck it I'll half-ass this season until next year when I'm a free agent. Hard to predict.

He only has to work hard for eight more games, and his final contract is on the line. He'll put the effort in.

Pick one (no PPR): Donald Brown against Cincy, Cadillac Williams against Carolina, banged-up Percy Harvin against Chicago.
Pick one more: Joel Dreessen against Jax, Jordan Shipley at Indy, Anthony Armstrong against Philly.
Right now I have Armstrong and Brown active.

This isn't strictly related to this week, but...
Steve Smith (NYG) was a torn pec and is out for at least 2wks. Should I dump him for the rest of the season and pick up Donald Driver on waivers? Or wait out the injury? My other WR are Pierre Garcon, Deion Branch, and Steve Smith (Car), with Vernon Davis for the flex spot.
Really Not All That Bright

I would drop the other Steve Smith. He's not producing even when healthy, and Claussen isn't going to turn things around this season.

I had Aaron Rodgers in 3 leagues and this is his bye week. But I'm managing along nicely with Garrard, Orton, and probably Vick in his replacement. I'm a little concerned about Orton getting yanked so Tebow can play since Denver is up 2000 to nothing.

That's a better idea. NYG Smith has been decent, if not spectacular. On review, though, Driver is still injured and will probably miss a couple more weeks. Mike Thomas (JAX) is on waiver, as is Robert Meachem (NO). Either of those seems better. I'd lean towards Thomas, though, since he's WR1 and I like how Jacksonville has been playing lately. Thoughts on that?

Thomas is the Jags' #2, not #1. Sims-Walker is the #1. I'd definitely pick up Thomas over Meachem, though.
I need Vernon Davis and Jamaal Charles to score less than 1.7 points (combined) to win in HHM this week- but if I had hung onto Thomas (who I drafted) I'd be up big.

Also, saying "WR1" in fantasy terms means a top-tier fantasy WR, a guy who'd be your primary starter, not the primary receiver on a team, which would typically be referred to as "#1 WR"

Who says he's not an elite guy? ;)
Its my first season in fantasy. I'm still struggling to keep all my terms like PPR and flex straight.

Got that in one quarter+one play. Not bad for a waiver wire pickup.

In a non-SDMB PPR league, I was losing 103-85, with me having Vick to play and my opponent no Monday night players. This is why I traded for Vick. Makes my lousy fantasy weekend a lot better with a win in this league.
