the one thing you want that is currently outside your financial reach. The thing that you consistently, passionately desire, if anything. Not passing fancies, the first place you go when you think of the lottery win. (After giving it away and so forth...the first personal inulgence.)
Mine has been the same my whole life long: a pool. My own pool. I love looking at real estate porn here in LA, but all I really do is go for the pool shot. Yeah, the space the location the decor...nice, I'd like it, great kitchen, blah blah...but the thing that gives me an ache in my chest is the pool. The bigger, the more it makes me ache. If it's pretty and surrounded by beautiful landscaping I could almost cry.
I could be very happy with everything else as long as I had a pool of my own. A big one, heated year round. If I had that I would never wish for anything pricey again.
(And before you say it I'd grow bored with it, no I wouldn't. I rented a house with a pool for a few years, a tiny, pain in the ass pool. And I NEVER tired of it. I'd pay the big bucks to heat it in winter so I could swim.)

On a smaller scale, I would like a bigger, fancier TV than I have any jusification for buying even if I had the money.
On a larger scale, I want to build a LARP town with all kinds of built-in coolness, like fog machines and tunnels.

Travel!
This would be an indulgence of time as well as money, as I have three young children and they don't really fit well into my fantasies of wandering around letting my attention be drawn by this and then that.
These days just a weekend trip a few hours away is a luxury not to be dreamed of. Heck I even sweat the price of the gas it takes to get to the other end of town, sigh.

My compound in the wilderness. My husband and I have been making plans for it for years now (not seriously, as we'll probably never have the money to go build it properly, but it's a dream for a possible future). I think we've got a moat, three or so pools (one that you can swim into and out of the building proper), some waterfalls, a grotto, cougars on patrol, a huge habitat for endangered animals, a large rectangular house with a courtyard in the middle, a heli-pad,...it's a work in progress. :)

A big piece of land. 80 to 100 acres in the woods, with a tiny little cabin in the middle. A place for hubby to run a few cows and have a big truck garden. That would be heaven.

Small: I have wanted permanent laser leg-hair removal since I first heard it existed. Though I have to admit I'm less interested now that I live in a cold climate and am getting older.I have more leg hair than many men, it's dark and my skin is pale, and I get ghastly ingrown hairs with every type of hair removal I've ever tried.
Big: I'd LOVE to have an architect-designed house built to my specs. Ross Chapin (http://www.rosschapin.com/) would be my preferred architect. It'd be super-efficient, passive solar, small (under 2000 sq ft), detailed, maybe straw-bale construction, with many custom features including an indoor-outdoor rabbit habitat with a cat-flap type door leading into the kitchen. Built-in bookshelves with sliding glass doors everywhere. Everything designed for sensible use of space and easy cleaning, but also nice to look at -- my preferred style is a sort of hybrid of Craftsman, Shingle, Shaker, and modern. Clean lines, good proportions, no frou-frou. The bedroom would be a sort of bump-out above the top floor with windows on all sides and skylights, just big enough for a king-size bed, like a permanent tent. A different room would hold clothes closets and drawers and a washer and dryer. The house would be sited on a gorgeous piece of non-manicured land through which a stream runs, lots of wildlife, far from any urban noise, and within easy walking distance of nice coffee shops and other civilized amenities. Haven't quite worked out the logistics on that last part yet.

An indoor swimming pool with adjacent hot tub and sauna. My grandparents had an indoor pool (no hot bub or sauna) in their basement. Swimming was a normal part of Chrismas for us kids when I was little. After my grandfather's stoke/accident at the lake cottage he went into a coma and the upkeep was just too much for granny. Even after my brother & his wife moved in with her he never got around to reopening the pool (but he did put a hot tub in). The pool was fixed until after she died and even that was only because they sold the house.

I would love to have an annuity, $50,000 per year for the rest of my life, and a small property in Arizona with a small house and garden on it that is custom designed to deal with my various handicaps that I own outright, no mortgage or liens, on 1 scre of land with a good deep well, with the entire acre fenced in with 10" tall chain link fence and a gate that operates by a keycard thingy.

A very large greenhouse attached to the house, with a swimming pool in it (and also a koi pond). I've always wanted a pool since I was a child... and I have recurring dreams that happen in large, beautiful greenhouses. Being able to grow delicate plants year round would be lovely.

Why from Alabama or Ohio? Is that where all the best maids come from? Does "clean house" or "do laundry" or "go away" have some extra meaning I don't know? I'm always finding out that there are dirty connotations for what sound like the most innocent expressions to me.

A house. I rent, and fantasize daily about owning my own home, with a yard large enough for a garden, a basement for canning and growing stuff indoors in the winter and doing crafts, near enough to work that I could walk or bike (or near to a light-rail station, since there's one right at the school).

If I won the lottery (although as I tell people, I always win by not playing), or better had I asked Sergei to let me know if he ever started a company to exploit his idea for a great new search engine--I am not kidding--the only change I would make in my life style would be that whenever I flew I would go first class.

A big old beach house by the ocean. Maybe a Queen Anne style, all white and sky blue with with a turret, gingerbread carving, a fabulous antique weathervane, stained glass windows, wide wraparound porch with rocking chairs and huge pots of non-stop begonias, geraniums, fuschia. White curtains, wood floors, fireplaces, books. A cliche, I suppose, but I once spent happy summers in such a house. Oh, I'd have a big old grill and every weekend all my friends would come over for grilled seafood and steak, with bushels of fruits and veggies I'd bought just that morning at the farmer's market. We'd spend happy evenings on the enormous screened in porch, gathered around an outdoor fireplace. A glass of Pinot Grigio? Perhaps a Sam Adams Oatmeal Stout? Grey Goose on the rocks with a twist? Thanks, don't mind if I do!
My twenty cats and five dogs (that I would acquire) and I would be very happy and comfy there...That's my country getaway.
I would also have a nice penthouse apartment in the city, waaaaay up high, views to die for through my west-facing glass wall. I would have a book full of menus from every restaurant in the city, and I would order food sent in for every meal, and never have to cook a thing. One wall would be taken up by a humongous, professionally maintained salt-water aquarium which would enchant and mesmerize my many visitors. That's my little city place, convenient for walking to the many concerts, theaters, movie houses, and clubs I'd be checking out.

A designer wardrobe (including a Hermes Kelly bag and lots of Chanel) and custom-made shoes. My feet are small and relatively wide, and it's hard to find size 6E shoes that are within my budget. Of course my big city pad and beach retreat would come equipped with a chauffeur. When Mr. Sali needs a box of Ho-Hos at 10 at night, I could just have Raymondo scoot up to the 7-11. Take me grocery shopping (and bring all the stuff into the house). Drive my mom to the doctor's on a snowy day. Weekend trip to the casino, road trip to Florida, take the kids back to college - Oh, I would be SO happy to never have to drive ever again! No $5,000 hooker could possibly bring such pleasure, unless she had a driver's license, too.

This works for me, though I need the house to be designed for both accessibility and eco-friendliness, I need the fence to be something more elegant than chain link, perhaps reclaimed timber, and I need the property somewhere in a far suburban ring in the western side of the Carolinas. Also? A Prius.

I like the suggestions of a new car (I've always driven one 10 years older or more), clothes made to fit you specifically, and a ton of makeup to play with... but my number 1 has to be a piano. I'd never own anything again, especially not a pool.
I'd rent a cabin, on the lake I adore, for the summer, fly in by bush plane, and stay all summer.
Travel, travel, travel. Let's see, I'd go to Sri Lanka (a long cherished dream!), Egypt definitely, Australia, of course, heck, maybe even Europe. I'd just roam the world, wherever my heart desired for as long as I felt like it, then, on to the next place. Or, maybe come home to visit, but then be able to head out again as soon as the mood strikes me, now that would be heaven!
I would spend days in London, England just doing museums. For days and days, it would be heaven!

I've been working pretty much non stop since I was 15. I worked all through college without a break, and for a solid 25 years since then. It's become so much more difficult to pull the 12- to 15-hour days now that I'm pushing 50.

I've always wanted a playhouse- like a little one, me-sized.
Once me-size became pretty much regular-size (as opposed to little girl sized) I didn't stop wanting a playhouse, but now I want one for my kids. Like an amazing, opulent playhouse on the ground and a tree house. the tree house would still be pretty fancy (and safe), but not in the tiny curtains and china style that the playhouse would be.
I don't have kids yet, but it's still something I want.

Land, at least a section and I'd plunk my abode right in the center. I'd build all kinds of 4 wheeler trails, have game cameras and food plots everywhere. There'd be a good 1,000 yard stretch for shooting. I'd have a nice cedar smoke house and a walk-in freezer. I'd have a big silly dog, a persnickety cat, and a dirty, dirty pickup.
I'd love to build my own house but I'd be happy enough in a double wide as long as I could have the land.

I'm assuming that the OP is looking for a physical thing. The problem is that for me physical possessions aren't the problem. The problem is time. For example I would like a yacht and I could afford one, but I would have no time to use it if I bought it. I could quit my practice and then I'd have time, but then I couldn't afford the yacht...

I think we've got a moat, three or so pools (one that you can swim into and out of the building proper), some waterfalls, a grotto, cougars on patrol, a huge habitat for endangered animals, a large rectangular house with a courtyard in the middle, a heli-pad,...it's a work in progress. :)
I would echo this sentiment but would place it up here in Alaska where I live. A nice 160-acre plot (standard homestead size) with either a creek or a lake on it. The periphery would be delineated by "NO HUNTING" signs and right below them a similar posting of "NO TRAPPING" with the standard warning that trespassers will be trapped and skinned. The land would have a feed station for ravens, some isolated suet stations for the small-smalls like weasels, squirrels, voles, foxes, etc, and an open area for willow growth fort the moose. In there somewhere would be a small cabin with a fenced area for a few dogs (dobies and pit bulls, both of which I have raised and which are extremely friendly given half a chance not to mention great hiking companions) and a nice meandering trail system.
Oh, yeah...and a big neon sign on the outskirts that tells Sarah Palin she is an idiot as well as a quitter. Just knowing it's there would drive her nuts. Uh..nuttier.

A living situation without roommates. I'm 27 years old and I have never ever in my whole entire life lived in a place that was only mine. It's really the only thing I want that is totally out of reach. Rent here is out-fucking-rageous, I live paycheck to paycheck, and I can't save money because I don't make enough.
Hopefully I can make it happen once my car is paid off. 3.5 years from now... :(

I'd probably split my time 50/50 between:
Long tranquil beatific trips on sail boats/ships, and
Participating in various road rallying events in a Porsche or Ferrari or something.

World travel, extended sailing trips, learning aviation. Not being tied down to a job would give me freedom, and having the financial ability to do so would be nice.

I'd like a little something from Magrathea. Preferably with fjords, but I'm not that picky.
That's cool. But I want minions. Not a bunch all at once, more like serial minions. I could have a good time thinking up projects for them to do.

the one thing you want that is currently outside your financial reach. The thing that you consistently, passionately desire, if anything. Not passing fancies, the first place you go when you think of the lottery win. (After giving it away and so forth...the first personal inulgence.)
I want to travel. And SWMBO has said repeatedly that she'd like to go on a Mediterranean cruise. So, my splurge would be to take my sweetie on a 2-3 week long Med cruise, first class all the way. We'd plan it so that we got off in Athens or someplace like that, then rat around there for a while, then slowly make our way back via train. We'd hit places in Italy, Germany, France and then end with a stay in England for a while.
Then, since we're rich, we'll either come back home or do it again!

A washer and dryer or a dishwasher of my very own. Sigh, I'm an NYC apartment dweller and my needs are simple.
A completely repaired, rewired, replummed, rewindowed, replastered, new appliances, with a 100% stable foundation, craftsman home c. 1910 to 1929, complete with little nooks, pantry, original hardwood and other details that only homes from that era can have - but just without the fixer-upper problems.
Preferably 2 story + basement, 3 bedroom, with a decent size living and dining room, an enclosed patio or sunroom in the back facing either south or east, and a decent size back yard with room for a garden. And of course, completely paid off.
Also, in an older neighbourhood - close to the inner city and close to the bike path.

Financial independence. There's no one material thing I really want, but life would be great if I didn't have to work for a living. There are so many ways I'd like to volunteer my time, and things I'd love to do around the house, but my need for a regular income severely infringes upon my ability to do them.
Actually, a bespoke suit would be nice.
Just a little ol' Ford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ford_GT_High_Quality.jpg).
I often think of things in terms of GTs now as opposed to dollars. Like 'this IRA is worth a couple of GTs now' or 'that retirement home would cost ten GTs', etc.

One thing I've always wanted, If I won the lotto, would be a large hot tub custom built to resemble a canibals stew pot.
But if I only win a scratch ticket I'd settle for a new card-board box unter the overpass near the MacDonalds. (Their dumpster has the best grub)

A laundry room that I don't have to share with neighbors. As long as we're dreaming, it should be on the bedroom floor of the house. It should have cabinets and a sink. There should be enough space for a clothes rack, and an ironing board I can leave up. It should be painted a cheery color.
The washer and dryer should be the super efficient kind and have enough capacity so I can wash things like pillows and blankets and the bathroom rugs.
If that's too much to ask, I'd like really nice high thread count cotton sheets.

A huge Library and a castle, with rooms with all sorts of bizarre things in it like an Alchemist or Dr or scientist would have had 100's of years ago. Skeletons, chemistry equipment, hundreds of original and old books, manuscripts, maps, candles, weird contraptions/inventions, bizarre things in jars. The library would be quite large and lit by candle light (I cant read in the very bright light, its annoying) with a ladder on a rail to climb up to get books on the top shelves. This castle would also have a HUGE fireplace like Charles Foster Kane had in Citizen Kane at Xanadu. Bear-skin rugs, a GAMING room with old-style wooden tables and decorated like some INN out of Lord of the Rings, with real kegs of beer and ale, everything candle-lit, a gallery of art, a staircase that is obscenely HUGE, a WAR ROOM with all sorts of medieval weapons, tactical stuff etc. How much do you think this would cost, I mean the castle etc? lol I would hire some hollywood set creators that do horror movies to decorate the whole place, make it look like Dracula's home, that would probably be the cheaper part...I'd but expensive props and costumes from all my favorite horror/scifi flicks and have them displayed throughout. Wow...ok thats a lot of money come to think of it. :smack:

Get a laundry spinner (http://www.laundrymachines.co.uk/product.php/172/6/) ... it whizzes out even more of the water left in the wet laundry, makes the whole load take less time to dry!
I want one of these to go with the front load set where the washer has a drawer that you put the gallons of detergent, fabric softener and bleach in, and it sucks up the right amounts of each at the right time. All you do is shove the laundry in and turn on the machines =)
