C'mon, I can't be the only Doper who watched this last night. Let's dish.
First, I would like to thank Ms. Palin for doing this show and cementing the fact she'll never, ever be President. Get it, Mama Grizzly! :p
Speaking of mama grizzlies, how many times did she say that last night? I'm considering doing a drinking game next week, but I'd be trashed within 5 minutes. I have to say though: I'm tremendously impressed that they found a way to work in actual mama grizzly bears. Nice touch, TLC.
I have to say my favorite moment was a tie between:
When she talked about building a 14 foot fence to block her neighbor from looking at her and legitimately said that Americans can learn a lot from that about how to secure our national borders.
or
When she told her kid that no boys were allowed upstairs. Me thinks someone learned the hard way :p.
So, what did you all think? I can't lie, I'll be watching next week.

I haven't watched it yet, but need to check to see when it's re-run. I really want to catch at least one episode and see how it is!

I saw a clip of when they were fishing and a bear came toward the boat and she pulled her child in front of her. Of course she was just trying to keep the kid still but I can't help but think of the old advice that they way to avoid a bear attack is just be faster than everyone else. Putting someone else between you and the bear is the first step.

I'm sure that finding a mother bear and putting Palin in front of it so they could use that line was Task #1 for the crew.

I don't think I'll watch, hypothetically or otherwise. But out of curiosity, whats the concept of the show about? Is it like, an educational "Palin teaches you about Alaska wildlife", or a reality show type "a day in the life of Sarah Palin", or what?

It's. . . a little bit of all of that. It's somewhere between a humanizing thing on Palin and an Alaskan tourism promo. In this episode, Palin went fishing with her family out in the Alaskan wilderness, where they observed bears in their natural habitat-- then she went home and tried to prep for her Fox News interview while her daughter was trying to sneak boys upstairs. Then she went. . . glaciering or something. Idk. I kept hoping she'd fall into a crevasse.

It was a great show. Funny. Great scenery. Entertaining. Educational.
No other person in American politics could have made an entertaining show like this, showcasing their family as the Palins did.
It also set some kind of record for TLC. The first episode of the eight-part series was the most-watched program launch in TLC’s history, over 5 million viewers.

She's not in politics. She was in politics.
Also...are you on crack? It was educational? About what, our ability to laugh at the stupid? The ability of family values to reign supreme in the face of an unwed teenage mother?

I watched it, and then hopped on here last night to discuss, but no one had started a thread, and it was my bedtime.
Anyway. I only yelled at her a few times while watching it. I was doing laundry at the same time, though, to keep myself sane. I liked the part where she said she "wasn't a quitter". Non-political, my arse. I can't wait to read Joe McGinness' book.
I wonder what Alaskans thought of the show.

It's on now. I like seeing the Alaskan wilderness. The river and bears were pretty.
Obviously, some of this is planned for the camera. The kids didn't look like they had seen bears before or fished much.
I'm willing to ignore politics. Focus on the gorgeous glaziers and animals. When else will we get to see footage like this? I certainly don't have the money to visit those places myself.

I don't have cable, nor a compelling need to watch this.
However, I did enjoy the clip (I think on HuffPost) of Palin discussing the building of their 14-foot fence and how they needed it to protect their privacy and then in the very next breath suggesting that Todd (?) drill a peephole in the fence so she can spy on her neighbor. That's rich. :D

She's not in politics. She was in politics.
Which was only ever so she could be on tv anyway, I'm pretty sure.
The kids didn't look like they had seen bears before or fished much.
I haven't seen it, but she never struck me as the truly outdoorsy type. For most people doing this sort of 'nature' show, I'd assume that the hairspray is for the cameras. In this case, I assume that everything else is for the cameras, and the hairspray is who she is.

All that was missing was someone saying "awkward!" in that sing-song voice.
I saw some clips of the landscape and if I could watch the show for the landscape and wildlife and fast forward through Palin and have it not affect her ratings, I might consider watching it but surely there are some shows about the Alaska wilderness that don't include her?

Mine certainly didn't (I dropped it last month). They were slowly eroding away at the good channels that nobody watches. I actually quite like Fox Business, CNBC, and NatGeo and G4 disappeared as well.
Anyways, I wasn't able to hypothetically find it :(. I'll try harder tonight.

Sarah Palin is a very real person, and I cannot think of any other politician who would so fearlessly put themselves out there and say "This is who I am, this is my family, this is where I live." I find it incredibly refreshing.

Yeah, I think the people I hate more than celebrities are the children and family of them.
Like, I hate Palin so very, very much. I can't stand her, but I have to admit that she's manuvered her way staying in the limelight pretty impressively.
Her children are just along for the ride and it seems like they're starting to think that it's something that they've done something to deserve it.
What is that Bill Cosby line? We don't have money. I have money. You're broke.

Didn't Palin get criticized for getting way too close to the bears (http://jezebel.com/5691359/sarah-palin-called-out-for-fishing-with-mama-bears)?
I'm tempted to start watching, just for the, "Man, politics just got hella surreal" factor. Gotta wonder if stuff like this and the Bristol Palin/Dancing with the Stars scandal will make footnotes in history textbooks years from now.

What day/time does it come on, incidentally? Gotta make sure I've got enough bizarre reality TV stars for every weekday. Now, Monday and Thursday are Real Housewives (Atlanta and Beverly Hills, respectively), and Tuesdays are for the Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger (or as I like to call her, the female TV version of Howard Stern). I'm pretty sure old Sarah can keep up with the Grammers, Maloofs, and Leakeses...

I had it on last night while folding laundry. It was like a train wreck, I couldn't look away. I can't stand her folksy vocal affectations, her voice really bugs the crap out of me.
Just to remain non-partisan, I find that Obama does this to me also. I have especially noticed it when he pronounces the word "to" or "too", he says, "tuh".

The show's ratings plummeted in its second week.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/blogs/live-feed/sarah-palins-alaska-ratings-plummet-48403
Sarah Palin's Alaska fell 40% on Sunday night to 3 million viewers.
Not many were in the key adult demo either. Only 885,000 viewers were ages 18-49, dropping 44% from last week.
In fact, the median age of the show is 57 -- that's 15 years older than TLC's average.
