An ebay search turns up an album named Coven, by a group called Coven. The seller lists the songs on the album & One Tin Soldier is listed.

KarlGauss was close: the original version came from the group The Original Caste and the album was called "One Tin Soldier". It peaked at number 34 in 1969. The group Coven had a hit with it after their version was used in Billy Jack. It hit numbers 26 (in 1971), 79 & 73 (in 1973).
