View Full Version : How Many Different Airports have You Been To?
MPB in Salt Lake

I was travelling this week and passed thru a couple of airports (layovers) that I had never been to before. I had some time to kill and was looking in one of the airline magazines at their route maps and went ahead and counted up all the different airporst that I can remember passing through over the years. I was surprised at how many different airports that I have been to, and wondered about others experiences.
How many different airports have you been to? (Best guesses are fine and for this thread, if you feel that you have been there, even just for a brief stop without getting off the plane, go ahead and count it)

So, 17, unless I'm forgetting something. I might also have flown out of Philadelphia at some point, and I can't remember if New Orleans was by plane or by bus, so possibly 19.

At the height of his consulting career my uncle travelled more than 200 days a year throughout the US and Canada. If you call him just to chat and mentioned that you'll be travelling to [pick a city] he'll ask what airline and make recommendations. "You'll probably fly in to terminal D. Before you get on the tram you've gotta get an apple fritter from the donut place."

The main airport and a small airfield in San José; Liberia (Costa Rica)
Buenos Aires (querido... ah no no, Argentina)
Sao Paulo (Brazil)
Miami, Louisville, Philadelphia, Dulles-whatever-it's-called-now (they seem to change its name often), Los Angeles, San Francisco, two in Houston, JFK, Newark, Austin (USA)
Frankfurt (Germany)
Basel trifecta, it's actually in France but serves three countries (Switzerland/France/Germany)
CDG, Marseilles, Bayonne (France)
Zurich (Switzerland)
Milano's actual airport and one of the other ones "nearby"; Venice (Italy)
Palma de Mallorca, BCN, ZGZ, Murcia, MAD, Reus, Pamplona, Bilbao, Valencia (Spain) - expecting to add Seville any day now, but it's a trip to Bilbao
Heathrow, two other of London's airports, Edinburgh, Glasgow, the one which claims Glasgow but is not and which Ryanair flows out of (the UK)
DF (Mexico)
Comes up to 41.
You guys are making me feel like a total homebody.

The last time I flew was 1970! Except for taking people to or from the Nashville International, my other visits back in olden times were in:
Montgomery (yes, there's an airport there)
Atlanta (you can't get out of The South without it)
Chicago (destination city all three times I've flown!)
Rochester, NY
Oh for God's sake. I can't believe I forgot Rochester. I lived there! My parents lived there for 30 years. That was the first airport I've flown from, and I visited there every year for about 15 years.
Also Syracuse, though I don't think I was ever actually inside of the airport. I once took a flight from Rochester to Boston, but we had a brief stop in Syracuse.
I also left off Atlanta.

Easily over 100 different airports, many multiple times; I've been to PHL at least 80 times and DFW at least 40. I fly both state-side and internationally for work approximately 25 times per year. Any list I come up with, however, would be incomplete. Who keeps records of all of that? Certainly not me.

Here's the only ones I can't find on anyone else's lists:
1) Samara, Russia

And possibly whatever airport serves the Four Corners area. I can't even remember whether the airport was in Durango, Farmington, or where. It's been nearly 20 years since I flew there. But it's hard to tell whether or not it's already on someone's list.

I'm assuming by "been to" the OP means "actually flown in or out through." The ones where I've just visited the airport (like to drop someone off) would add a few more.

As far as I can recall, about 75. I won't list them all, but I have flown into all three major New York airports, both Dallas-Fort Worth airports, both of Chicago's, both of Houston's old and new Denver, and two out of three in San Francisco.
And for no explicable reason, I've flown to every city in North Carolina that has at least regional airline service.

These others aren't chronological...I couldn't remember where to put them.

1. There's an airport with a code of OGG? We should make that the official airport of the SDMB.
2. Canada really got stiffed when it came to understandable airport codes.

All Canadian airport codes start with an 'Y' for some reason, and there doesn't seem to be any similar convention in other countries. Does anyone know the reason?

And, although I didn't fly there, I spent a night in my broken down car in the Gallup, NM airport parking lot one very cold November. Thankfully I had gas, and a transmission problem not an engine problem, so I could use the heater. I'd been towed there hoping that when they opened I could get a rental car. I couldn't, but they did have complimentary coffee, a snack machine and a restroom.
So, 17.

We didn't do a cruise, since we lived in Lisbon and drove up. But the drive on the road above the river was great and the vineyards in the fall were very dramatic: deep purple grapes against red and orange leaves. Portuguese red wines are possibly the most overlooked wines of Europe. They're robust and very earthy. The whites, not so much.

I really enjoyed the various vinho verdes that I drank in Lisbon---Then again, I am not much of a connoisseur and I was also drinking plenty of Sagres, so take my opinion for what it's worth.......

I really enjoyed the various vinho verdes that I drank in Lisbon---Then again, I am not much of a connoisseur and I was also drinking plenty of Sagres, so take my opinion for what it's worth.......
I've just never had one that didn't make me pucker. Did I mention that we lived a block from the Port Wine Institute: holy yum.

All Canadian airport codes start with an 'Y' for some reason, and there doesn't seem to be any similar convention in other countries. Does anyone know the reason?
Somebody who goes by the Internet name of GregW thinks he does:
A little more on this. There are two types of codes for airports. The three letter code we are all familiar with is called a IATA code, and it is used for the movement of passengers. There is also a four letter code which is called the ICAO code. That is mostly used for flight operations.
The first two letters of the ICAO codes designate the country or the region. For Canada, codes CY, CW and CZ are all designates of Canadian airports. (Actually, technically it is designating the radio transmission broadcast for the navigation equipment). USA codes start with K or W (just like radio stations - thus the link to the radio towers at the airports). At the time, all airports in Canada with a weather station were given CYxx codes, all those without weather stations were given CW or CZ codes.
There is nothing that says ICAO codes and IATA codes have to be in any sort of alignment. Amsterdam's Schipol Airport is IATA AMS and ICAO EHAM (E for Europe, H for Holland, AM for Amsterdam), Heathrow is LHR on IATA and EGLL for the ICAO code.
Canada decided to keep things simple and use the same code for IATA and ICAO, but dropping the first letter in the ICAO code to get the three digit IATA code. That is why CYYZ becomes YYZ, CYVR becomes YVR, etc.
In general, the USA do the same thing (KORD / ORD is Chicago O'Hare, KLAX and LAX is Los Angeles), but because they have the entire range of Kxxx codes, they can be a little more varied in their naming.from here (http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=59578)

Cincinnati? I think?* (I had a connecting flight on time in Ohio, I can't recall if it was Cleveland or Cincinnati)
All the * are for visits that were just connecting flights, everything else was either an airport I arrived or departed from.
All said, it's not a lot, but I think it's large when I realize I've only ever taken seven trips by plane my entire life. But with today's "cheap airfare travel sites" you get lots of connecting flights.

Must be almost 50, over a wide swath of North and Central America, the Caribbean basin and a little into the Pacific. I do know off the top of my head the ones where I've only been as a stop or connection and never left the grounds:
Panamá (Tocumen)
Portland OR
San Francisco
Dallas-Ft. Worth
Houston (Bush)
Charlotte
Chicago O'Hare
Bermuda (weather diversion)
