Listen grienspace. This is the pit. I am by no means a "pitizen", but, for some reason I felt compelled to respond. I'll go line by line, because trying go at this in one fell swoop is to much for this newbie to tackle effectively.


People get hurt in the Pit by the Pit Bullies. These bullies can't seem to respond to logic or gentle persuasion when they are on the attack.


It is true that people often get their asses handed to them here. You know what though? Most of the time, they deserve it. Sure it isn't always pretty, but then again, neither is life. Sometimes when subtle reminders that one's logic is not up to par are ignored, one has to switch to the more forthright brick to the frontal lobe approach. Often for the person concerned, it can be painful.

Luckily they have several options available, some make things better, others make it worse. The best method to calm everyone down is to issue a simple apology saying more or less "Whoops, my bad". To the best of my knowledge, every time this has been done, the so called "pit bullies" have said "Hey that's all right", and life has gone on. This is a good thing. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have your response, which is to kick and scream and carry on in a manner most unbecoming a fighter of ignorance. This usually goes over about as well as a turd in a punchbowl. This, I think is safe to say, a bad thing. If you learn nothing else from this post, please learn this.


Innocent people are lured into the pit where reason and logic gives way to the lawlessness of the pit.


Anybody with half a brain who has been here for more than a week knows what happens in the pit. Not really the best of arguments, if I may say so. Kind of like saying anybody who falls off of a ladder can get pissed at the ladder company because they weren't aware of gravity.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, the pit serves a purpose, and is here to stay. While you may feel the purpose it serves differs vastly from the intended purpose, I think a majority of posters on this board feel different. Also, to make things a bit easier for you, please note, I said a majority, not all. There are many well respected posters who feel the pit serves no major purpose. They have said as much. Look at those threads. See how they went about stating their cause and how they accepted the fact that the pit is here to stay (hint: generally goes along the lines of "I do not like it. I will not go there."). See how happy everybody is as a result?. Please learn from their efforts. It can only do you a world of good.

And since this thread is a thinly veiled attempt to continue the good times had in scratches thread (and it's working- kudos, gs), and since others have referenced said thread, i would like to address one of the legitimate questions i saw there- to wit, what exactly are a pit bulls warning signs?
As i stated in that thread, i raised pits for a number of years, and additionally, am a dog owner of some 35 years.
these are the warnings i have noticed, and can say that i have seen specimens of all breeds i have any passing familiarity with display these signs- they are not idiosyncratic of pits. I have noticed though, that of the flashier types of warnings, pits engage in these much les than other breeds.
spectacular lunging, barking, growling, snarling, like cartooniverse described.
more subdued snarling
chest nudging another dog- putting their head over the back/neck of the other dog
some to pay careful attention to
a stillness in which they may or may not snarl softly, may or may not raise their lips. they can be in any position, it's the lightly bunched stillness to look for. they may look directly at you, or they may focus intensely to the side of you, not looking directly at you- this type in particular watch. this stillness may not be accompanied by any other particular behaviour, but bears watching just the same.
another is when they are watching you, tracking you with their eyes- and not displaying any signs of friendliness- this doesn't mean imminent attack, but don't capriciously fuck with any dog that is doing this to you.
one physical sign is a stripe of raised hair down their back, kinda reminiscent of a rhodesian ridgeback, or one of those curly golden retrievers.
I think that is it for the most part, i probably left some out.

one more thing- if i haven't raised a dog, i am aware of it-especially a pit- they are pretty highly bred, and in my experience, a pure bred is more high-strung than a mutt, in general. so if i haven't raised it, i am more um, aware of it, respectful or cautious i guess, though those are a little stronger than what im trying to convey, than if i have raised the dog.

I was actually the first on who made the point that if APBTs are banned, then people wanting an aggressive dog will simply move on to another breed. Shall we then ban GSDs, Rotties, Dobies, Belgian Shepherds, Ridgies, etc. I also posted a link to an APBT FAQ, which was quite obviously ignored.

A response characterizing the degree of provocation for an intense verbal attack can hardly be considered trolling, a proactive event.
