View Full Version : What's another word for Airhead?

Peanuthead

As in "She's such an airhead, she's always losing her keys". I don't want to be insulting. I'm looking for more of a cutesy word to make her smile.

Is ditz really less offensive?

"She's so absent-minded" seems like a good way to go.

Well, daydreamer might be the least offensive, although ditz came to mind pretty quickly.

There's no need to sanitize the comment to the point of meaninglessness - it's obviously a friend that he's trying to be cutesy with.

and yes, I think (but that's only me obvs.) that ditzy is less offensive, primarily because it just sounds cutesy.

:)

On the contrary, Peanuthead indicates a highly intelligent, sophisticated, handsome, wealthy, suave, honest, all around cool dude.*

*Who just might not always tell the truth. :D

Yeah, I kinda like "ditz". Cute and accurate without being insulting. But keep 'em coming anyway. She might like a little variety. ;)

I thought flighty was used to indicate more tentativeness, rather than forgetfulness?

I immediately thought ditz, but daydreamer's a better suggestion for totally avoiding offence - all the others could be taken as an insult if your dippy friend is in a sensitive mood even though they'd be taken as friendly teasing in a different mood; labelling people is a tricky business.

'Bimbo' would pretty much always be an insult, but I expect you're aware of that. Perhaps it has different connotations in different countries.

I was under the impression "Bimbo" describes a trashier subset of slut typically found cruising bowling alleys.

Yup, 'round here it isn't a description that a friend would find terribly endearing. :D

Well, there's "space cadet", but that's probably about even with "airhead".

Also "space case." I think it's less insulting than airhead. Space case implies someone who is lost in the clouds, but not necessarily stupid. Airhead implies their head is empty; that is, they are dumb.

My high school coach liked the term "wall-light".

Stick a flashlight in the ear and it lights up the wall on the other side.

Dingbat turtlebrained noodlehead! You ant skulled minus-mind! You have have nothing but mush you jellybrained helium head! If you had half a mind, it would be ten times as much as I give you credit for. That echo chamber between your ears has never had a brain cell for an audience. Bobble-head! Numbskull! Pea brain! If you could clone yourself, your sum would be zero! You could get a room at a hotel with no occupancy. For free.

One of my cousins always used "chowderhead" to describe her airhead sister. Never heard it before or since, but it worked well as an inside joke.

"chowderhead"“Meathead” is one of a large number of pejorative slang terms in English for persons perceived to be, either chronically or temporarily, a bit low on the wits scale. The human head being the home of the brain, a substantial number of these phrases end in “head,” the first part of the term delineating the supposed cause, extent or notable object of comparison of the subject’s stupitude. Thus we have “bonehead,” “clunkhead,” “fathead,” “lunkhead,” “jughead,” “chucklehead” and, my fave, “chowderhead.” The head and mind also figure in adjectives such as “osteocephalic” (a fancy Latinate form of “boneheaded”) and the blunt but elegant “brainless.”meathead (http://www.word-detective.com/2010/10/01/meathead/)
