View Full Version : People who look better after age 40

Brynda

My nominee is Candice Olson. I can't get over how good she looks these days. She was always attractive, but to my eye, she looks better now than she did even a few years ago. I don't think it is just the haircut.

Here she is at age 44: http://www.hgtv.com/candice-tells-all/show/index.html

and here she was a few years ago: http://www.hausbydr.com/candice_olson.asp

If it is just her hair, I want her stylist.

Brian Austin Green is going to look a hell of a lot better after 40 (http://www.fancast.com/blogs/2010/tv-news/brian-austin-green-nervous-to-play-housewives-hunk-plus-meet-his-tv-dad/) than he looked when he was in his dweebilicious 20s. He's only 38 now, though.

Diane Lane? She was always cute, but around 40 she got hottified.

Elizabeth Hurley. Again, always attractive, but with the addition of some years she somehow got hotter.

Not quite there yet, but Gwyneth Paltrow (38).

I think Candice Bergen, altho she was a model when she was younger, has the sort of face that makes her look older. So she looks "right" at 40+ but looked slightly awkward as a youngster.

This could also be cultural bias - like most 30-something I didn't know who she was until she was playing a middle-aged classy lady on Murphy Brown. It might just be odd for me to see Murphy Brown as a young model.

When Tina Fey got the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor a little while ago, Amy Poehler was one of the presenters. I can't remember her exact word but she said something to the effect of, "And here's to looking better in our forties than we did in our twenties", which is so true for both of them. Both kind of awkward and chubby when younger, now: smoking hot mamas.

Granted, Michelle Phillips was 65 years old in that second photo, so to compare her with her 23 year old self was stretching it.

Sigourney Weaver--tremendous

Tom Cruise--never liked the babyface thing he had going as a younger man.

Phillip Michael Hall--he was so scrawny and nerdy, but he has only gotten better as he ages

Susan Sarandan--sexy sexy sexy, time has been kind to her

Sharon Osbourne--not gorgeous, but infinitely better than she used to be.

Some of this (HRC is a great example, Tina Fey is another) is going from someone who dresses themselves without much awareness, to someone who has been coached and styled by professionals. Not that they aren't good looking people, but they'd have been good looking younger with money and advice that they didn't yet have access to.

When I saw the pictures of a high-school age Sarah Palin in her first book, I was impressed that she wasn't especially attractive. Not bad-looking or anything, just not as hot as I was expecting, based on how good she looks now.

The way she plays off her looks today (and the spoiled-brat vibe she gives off when she doesn't get what she wants) made me think she'd always been like that.

Obviously, by the time she entered beauty pageants, things had changed. But there must have been a time when she wasn't just getting by on her looks.

It's one of the few things that's ever improved my opinion of her. :D

Don't get me wrong, I think Diane Lane is pretty, but she has not aged well, IMO. I remember thinking one time, "wow, Diane Lane is gorgeous for a woman who must be pushing 50." I looked her up and it turned out she was 36 at the time. I wonder if she's a cigarette smoker.

Totally opinion on this and one not everyone will agree with, but-

Sophia Loren. When she was young she was often too skinny and her eyes rarely smiled in pictures. I think she hit her peak in her 40s and 50s when she was secure in her success and her marriage and motherhood and just looked a much happier person and her weight and figure seemed somehow "right". She was a beautiful 20 something but she glowed in her 40s.

I don't think Leonard DiCaprio got better looking as he aged. He was breathtaking (for a guy) in Titanic. Right now, his face looks all piggy, his features look squashed into the middle. I hope he WILL get better looking with age, but right now...no.

I would guess that most of those are shooped, and even in the ones that aren't, she's got professional hair/makeup/wardrobe.

I'm not saying she's ugly. I think she's got an abundance of natural beauty. I just don't think:
-she's aging particularly well compared to other already beautiful women her age,
-she looks better after 40 than before (she peaked in her early/mid 30s IMO).

It's kind of hard to lie about your age when you've been in the public eye since you were kid. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Lane#Career) If you make a movie with Laurence Olivier when you're 13, anyone who cares to count will know how old you are from then on.

I will agree that she is both beautiful and a bit worn around the edges. But I think that can impart a sexy, worldly-wise quality.

I will second whoever posted that picture of George Clooney with a puppy, once I can get myself off the floor.

He did absolutely nothing for me until about five years ago. Now he is pants-meltingly hot.

She was a beautiful 20 something but she glowed in her 40s.I agree completely that she is one of the most stunning women ever at that age. But I don't think she was any slouch younger either. IMO, that no smiling thing is what makes Mediterranean women so hot, at ANY age.

I'm not sure if I'd say she was more beautiful after 40, but Helen Mirren has to be the most beautiful aging star of all time. I don't think I've seen a photograph of her where she's looked bad. Ever. Part of it is that she doesn't look like she's had work done AND she's aging well (compared to Bardot, who hasn't had any work done...but isn't aging as well).

Y'know, when I was getting my hair cut last week and was asked what I wanted, I joked, "Just make me look like George Clooney." The women laughed and said "Remember George Clooney?" What the heck? Is he some figure out of the past?

I would guess that most of those are shooped, and even in the ones that aren't, she's got professional hair/makeup/wardrobe.

This one (http://www.fabulousafter40.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/diane-lane.jpg) is probably the closest to what she actually looks like. Note the hilariously fake teeth and the wrinkles that even a quarter inch of makeup can't cover up.

Wow... that's interesting. I still think she looks pretty darn good there!

I think she's a set of veneers, a bottle of hair dye, and some expensive makeup away from looking like this (http://www.entropyguild.net/vlt/ulduar_antechamber/simpsons_cat_lady.jpg).

That Barbra Streisand picture reminded me of another candidate - Prince. Prince as a young dude (http://www.kalamu.com/bol/wp-content/content/images/prince%2014.jpg) - nothing wrong with the way he looks, but this is Prince as a much older dude - yowza! (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ogKj-eh5zNk/TRjnIpB90HI/AAAAAAAAAbU/fo5P1hdqhgM/s1600/prince-2010-1.jpg) He should really consider aging at some point, since he's in his fifties.

I was watching Raising Hope and thought how much better Martha Plimpton looks today than when she did when she was younger.

Also, see post #17.Holy shit, he looks like Gollum in that first one. I'm so mean, I can't stop giggling at it. To be fair, that is the other end of the spectrum from the Photoshopped one - clearly caught at a bad time, while making a goofy face. So if he's that bald, they do an awfully good hairpiece for him on the show!

I always thought Richard Dreyfuss looked better as he aged. American Graffiti (http://media.columbiatribune.com/img/croppedphotos/2010/03/25/Th_Go4_MovieMain_0325_t620.jpg?fbf2daa044e08a86b24c9c38cd7501865a0e2373) and Jaws (http://cueballcol.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/jaws1.jpg), versus later (http://images.broadwayworld.com/upload/35344/Richard_Dreyfuss_687160.jpg) in life (http://www.movieactors.com/photos-stars/richard-dreyfuss-stakeout-19.jpg).

Watching Fringe, I'm thinking Joshua Jackson will only look better and better as he ages. He's handsome, but he definitely still has something of a babyface about him. When he gets craggier, he will be hotter.

I thought he was seriously goofy looking when he was younger.
