I would like to get an idea of how many different professions are represented by the Doper community. I would like you to state your profession, but only if someone else hasn't posted that profession previously. This will require you to read the whole thread first to make sure you aren't posting a previously picked job. You may post twice if
1. You have a question about this thread and/or
2. You have two jobs, and neither of them have been listed yet.

Do you want general or specific? My general profession is librarian. I'm not going to say what my specific kind of work is within librarianship, because that would identify me: there are only about 10 people doing this in the English-speaking world, and I suspect there would only be 2 or 3 in other languages, so saying my specific kind of work would let you work out who I am in real life.

Archaeology (or "cultural resources") is part of the environmental compliance process. Nobody does it because they want to, they do it because the law requires it. We do contract work for utility companies, state and federal agencies, the military, etc. Most working archaeologists in the U.S. do consulting work as opposed to academia.

A good friend is Israeli and originally from Brooklyn. She said her son was having trouble in school because he spoke Hebrew with an American accent. Is English widely spoken in Israel?
I've been there - believe me, I've been there. The problem isn't that it's an accent, the problem is that its an American accent; I don't know if it's the vowels or the consonents or what, but nothing sounds dorkier than an American speaking Hebrew. Whenever I hear an American accent I feel the urge to punch the speaker in the face, and I used to have one myself (it still comes out occasionally when I'm nervous).
Everyone here speaks English, so you're friend's son won't have a problem communicating if he really needs to. But he can't live his life here without speaking the language. Sorry I can't really help.

"Full-time Homemaker."
At least, that's a job I found listed on a consumer survey that describes my current occupation best. I'm not female, so I can't be a stay-at-home-mom as others mentioned. I don't have any children or even a spouse. I'm otherwise unemployed and "earn my living" such as it is by doing everything a family member (who would otherwise live alone) needs to have done outside of their job much as any "housewife" would. I can't say what my job would be if I were employed, because I've not held a job since getting my college degree and my degree was not taken with prospects of any particular job.

More specifically, I am in lighting.
More specifically still, depending on the gig I may be a lighting designer, a lighting console programmer, a theatrical production electrician, or just a wrench. I could list about a dozen other jobs that I do, but I'd hate for a real rigger, audio guy or technical director to miss out on their chance to post.

ERP Consultant, specifically Functional Analyst. I get paid to learn what do my clients do, how do they do it, then prep one of the biggest ERP software packages out there for them to use, write the courses and manuals and train the people who need to use the new system.
If there are any forms which need tweaking or any patches that need writing (I avoid these like the plague), I explain what's needed in terms that the end users can understand, then a Technical Analyst translates that into terms the programmers can understand.
In a shorter version, "I get paid to tell people how to do their jobs."

I am a college professor.
Me, too (cue Zoe to enter and begin yammering how my illiterate posts clearly reveal me to be a liar about this claim) but not sure if you want a specific field within "professor." Mine is English (sub-specialties in writing, journalism and film), but I also work (half my job) as an editor of our University Press, and I've earned money (and continue to) as a pubished author of literary criticism, mostly, and some fiction.
Likewise with "artist"--I'm an oil painter. If you want my opinion, I'd judge that you overlap if you could easily be retrained to do another job. IOW, I think an oil painter is essentially the same things as a painter in acrylics, but I could no more be a sculptor than an astronaut, so I'm NOT repeating "artist" here, nor "college professor" with "English Professor," because I couldn't teach accounting without serious retooling (plus a brain transplant).

I realized that I have one other "certification," although I haven't practiced for eight or nine years, so maybe it doesn't count for purposes of this thread:
Ballroom scrutineer (that's the person who compiles all the judges' marks that are collected on little slips of paper and applies the skating system (http://www.worldsalsafederation.com/Skating%20System.html) to determine the result).
Nowadays this is mostly done by computer, and the scrutineer just presides over it all. Back when I started, it was entirely paper-based, and involved lots of transferring columns of numbers from judges' sheets to my score sheets, which sounds simple, but is incredibly fatiguing when you do it for 16 hours straight without a break. As a result of doing this for a while, I can now check off in a column a list of numbers being read to me (in or out of order), getting "behind" by as much as 5 or 6 numbers but continuing to remember what's in the queue while locating each one, while someone else reads a different list of numbers over a microphone in the room.

Sociophonetician - That's the COOLEST word I've heard today!Oh, agreed, glad to brighten your day. I could have left it at linguist, or said sociolinguist and phonetician.
Is that studying something like why some people say 'axe' instead of 'ask'?That's sort of what I do, though it's more like who says what and when, with a smattering of why that relies on social and articulatory/acoustic facts. Though I work more on vowels and prosody rather than consonants.
My degree is in Linguistics, and this sounds fascinating. I'd love to hear more about what you do/study...Yeah, I think it's pretty cool. I mostly do work on varieties of American English, particularly those associated with people of particular ethnicities and/or regions. For instance, I've done work on regional varieties of African American English in North Carolina and New York City, looking primarily at variation in the vowel systems and, to a lesser extent, pitch slope.
