The thread title underlining ruins the effect.

IvoryTowerDenizen - It's a unicode ascii emoticon popularized by/on a website called reddit.com

Too bad the underline isn't on top. That would make a perfect pair of glasses. OK, semiperfect. Flip the first smilie for perfect.

I'm on a Mac, using Firefox. I see squares with an underscore (no eyes) but the reason I clicked on it is those squares are identical to the characters I see in 90% of the spam I get. I was wondering what they are?

Squares are what usually shows up when the character that's supposed to be there isn't supported by the computer/font/encoding being used. You might also see a ? or a blank space, or a square with something in it, or other gibberish characters.

Because they are in the title. If you want them, just use copy and paste.

Actually, I think the underline adds to it, makes it look sterner or something.

So what alphabet are the eyes taken from? I'm gathering, by some Dopers' feedback, that it's a not standard one, but since I've installed a lot of different alphabets on my system for the purpose of anthem research, there's little that doesn't appear here, I can easily see them.

(My guess is Arabic).

It's likely to be a font problem, not a browser problem. I'm using Firefox and they display fine for me.

As far as I can tell, it's the Verdana font on Macintosh OS X that is missing the right symbols.

Arnold Winkelried
03-06-2011, 05:29 PM
Now that I think about it, I believe that either the browser or Macintosh OS X will look for a font that contains that character if the current font doesn't have it. I installed a font I had downloaded once that contained most Unicode characters, and now that I have installed that font, I see the indian language characters in the OP's thread title that make the title look like two eyes peering through glasses.

The font I installed is named Code2000 ( wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code2000) ) I was going to link to the font website but I had problems with the site, I'm getting a 404 error.

I was going to link to the font website but I had problems with the site, I'm getting a 404 error.

I tried the link on the Wiki page, and it was taking so long I figured it was going to 404. A google search took me to http://www.ffonts.net/. I clicked on the google link that came up with Code2000, and it took me to a page where the download started immediately. The download was a zip file containing:

CODE2000.TTF
ffonts.net.txt
CODE2000.HTM
ffonts.net.htm
install-a-new-font.txt

I hope it's safe. Assuming it is, what do I do with these files?

Arnold Winkelried
03-06-2011, 10:40 PM
The .TTF file is a TrueType font file. If you have a Macintosh, you double-click on the TTF file. This will open up the TrueType font file in FontBook (an application that comes with the OS). FontBook will display sample text in that font and in a dialog box there will be a button saying "Install". Click on Install and you're done. Before you Install, you should go to the FontBook preferences to see if it's going to be installed for the current user or all users, and pick which of those you want.

I know that the browsers do it in Windows. IE didn't in version 6, but now it does.

It works on my Safari, in OS 10.6.6. Do I really need to go into my system specs? It's a mac. In fact, it works on every mac I ever go to, because I'm snobby, and my computing experience is seamless. As long as the mac is updated to the most recent software and has an internet connection I can log in as a guest user (or create a new user account if I'll use the computer repeatedly), download whatever software I need, log into mobile me and let it apply my settings and preferences to the user interface (including doing something in safari to install the font that allows me to see reddit eyes.

Or at least... that's what I would say... if I was shamlessly promoting how cool my mac is. :p

Arnold Winkelried

Interesting. Did it work for you without installing a font? I also have 10.6.6 on my iMac. I didn't see the characters without installing that Code2000 font I mentioned.
I will have to check my MacBook to see if the characters show up. I haven't installed that font on the MacBook.

Forgot to ask: What font do you have that includes that character? Is it one of the fonts that came with the system? When I paste that character (the Kannada character Unicode ttha) in the Character Viewer (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8164.html) on my iMac, it tells me that the only font containing the character is Code2000.

I appreciate the help. I've found that upgrading my PowerBook has been pretty much trouble-free, so it's odd that such a simple thing as adding a font would cause problems.

I appreciate the help. I've found that upgrading my PowerBook has been pretty much trouble-free, so it's odd that such a simple thing as adding a font would cause problems. It must be a problem with the font file. I downloaded the one from my link in post 34 and it has a different creation date and is much smaller (3.1 MB) than the Code2000 font file I downloaded a few years ago (8.3 MB). You could try the Kannada font at this page: http://web.nickshanks.com/fonts/kannada/

Or you could ask Todderbob what font he has that shows that character.

I looked on my new MacBook that has 10.6.6 on it, and it also doesn't show the "reddit eyes". Instead it shows, in the Safari title bar for the page, the glyph that the MacOS uses for unknown characters. You might think you're seeing the reddit eyes, because if there is a missing font but the character that's missing is in a certain Unicode range then the glyph it displays tells you what character range the missing character is in. In other words, the glyph that shows could look kind of like like eyes in square-framed glasses when you view the glyph at a small size. It's all explained here

I'm not sure what Phone you are using, but interestingly enough, I'm using my iPod touch with iOS 4.2.1, and with both Tapatalk and Safari I ses the Kannada characters. It seems like iOS has a font with the Kannada script included with the OS even though Mac OS X doesn't.
