Infants seem to sense when mommy is away. I'm wondering if they can smell her from a distance. I've noticed that if Grampa is playing with the child and mommy comes quietly up behind it will start to look around.
Know what I mean?

According to this article (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/378663/your_babys_sense_of_smell_at_different.html), yes.

They can tell when she is near by the smell of her clothes, her hair and even her breast milk, and can differentiate between her and other women. This is further evinced by the fact that babies can tell their parents are close even when they aren't in the same room.
