View Full Version : Any knitters/crocheters want to volunteer to make goofy hats?

My best friend's little boy has brain cancer. He's undergoing radiation and chemo and has lost all his hair.

To make things more difficult, he also has autism so he's having a hard time figuring things out; however, I've made him a few goofy hats (monster, fish, monster, sock monkey) which he likes and they cheer him up quite a bit.

I'm wondering if anyone has a goofy hat recipe they would consider whipping up for him - I think he would think it was pretty cool to get some international goofy hats. :)

I'm game. Gotta think about what will work. What size have you made?

alice_in_wonderland
05-26-2011, 11:59 PM
He has a larger beano, despite only being 5, so make an adult size. ETA - I've made all adult sizes and they work well for him.

His favorite colour is red, but he also likes orange and yellow.

The goofier, the better! Thanks! :)

Heh. Guess I'll have to go look at some of the links in the other knitting thread. AIR there were some goofy hats that could serve as inspiration.

ETA: Any recommendations on yarn texture or weight?

I think whatever you like - he's doing chemo until October so he'll have pretty well every season of hat required.

Alice realized after the fact she should have asked for mod permission. We would have given it, so no biggie. [/mod]

Crocheters, if you're interested in a pattern, there's a designer, Stacey Trock, I like who makes cute hat designs, that are extremely simple to make and each pattern offers multiple sizes.
http://www.freshstitches.com/hats.php

I am not affiliated in any way. I just like her patterns.

I'd be happy to whip something up! Are there any fiber restrictions? ie, machine washable only, cotton only, no wool, etc.

alice_in_wonderland
05-27-2011, 10:38 AM
I think machine washable is good for pretty well any 5 year old boy! Other than that, no restrictions - he's not bothered by wool, etc. however I think cheap, washable acrylic would work great!

Just spent a movie going through ravelry hat patterns and favoriting ones that might have possibilities. Came up with a ton. Well, 55, anyway. You should be able to browse through them here (http://www.ravelry.com/people/gardentraveler/favorites?q=kidhat&in=tag) if you're a ravelry member. (And if you're not, you should sign up!)

From that list I've made him the Fish Hat, the Annoyed Monster Hat (his fave), and the Sock Monkey hat so maybe avoid those if you're thinking of busting something out. :)

I think I'll just make him a striped stocking hat -- I find complicated patterns too fidgety.

Could you get me a head circumference? What colors does he like? I've got a ball and a half each of orange, red, and yellow in my stash.

HIs fave colour is red, but red orange and yellow would be fantastic.

He wears a man's hat size 7 I think.

Checking my various books, that looks like about a 22" circumference to start.

Cool! I'm up for something different -- this will be fun.

Question, would he wear something pink? I have an idea for a pink piggie hat but I know when my nephew was that age, you couldn't have gotten him to wear anything pink for all the grape soda and Legos in the universe.

Hummm - I don't think so, although the pig part would appeal for sure. Could it be a muddy pick piggy with some brown on it maybe?

I'm not a sew-er, but I did see a fun hat at the Aquarium Saturday. It's a fish with a very wide mouth and lots of teeth. The mouth goes over one's head, and the tail sticks straight up, so that it looks like it's eating the wearer's head.

This isn't goofy, but I thought it was neat in a crunchy-hippy sort of way. Two rectangles of woolen blanket. The top was sewn into a cross. (i.e., each panel was folded like this: > and <) The top and seams were simply whip-stitched with yarn.

This is similar to the one at the Aquarium (http://www.geekologie.com/2009/05/this_is_the_awesomest_hat_ever.php), only the one in the link is a shark. The one I saw was much more colourful and looked like a little bit piranha.

Does it get cold where you live and does he like fleece? I don't crochet anything that requires any skill (scarves are as ambitious as I get), but it's just as easy to order two...?

Wohoo, I found the pattern online!
http://monsterarkivet.blogspot.com/2009/02/jordgubbsmossa.html

It's a small size, but it should be easy enough to enlarge. So, alice_in_wonderland, do I go for wool or cotton? The Drops people are doing their annual spring sale on wool yarns at the moment, but don't let that influence you. It's a lovely summer cap as well (Scandinavia went crazy about them when I was a teenager, you could scarcely cross an occupied playground without seeing at least one).

Humm - either cotton or very light weight wool maybe - if it's cotton he can wear it all summer which is when most of the chemotherapy is. However, he has lost a lot of weight and is having trouble regulating his temperature (he's cold all the time) so a light weight wool would probably work as well.

Thanks everyone - this is awesome - he's really excited!

Those are both really cute [b]Poysyn[\b]! If you want to order him one it's cool, but not at all necessary - I've had loads of brain farts on here where I miss some key part of a post - don't worry about it at all!

alice_in_wonderland, I just met my friend for lunch, and didn't have a box big enough to stuff all the goodies into. My husband donated some baseball cards, couple balsa airplanes and other small items as well. Katie wanted to see her hats modeled so I slammed up some more quick pics (http://www.flickr.com/photos/63727045@N07/sets/72157626776368613/). Well, darn it, the "Guest Pass" function doesn't seem to be working. Just made them public, but I will probably take them down before bed. Not sure where the person who commented found the pics, but if he came from this site...Dude: cool it. It's 90+ degrees, and I'm wearing a baggy, rather modest tank top. This is about the silly hats. Katie's are awesome, mine's just a lightweight acrylic in an open weave... nightcap? I'm just learning, but Kate's an art major, and quite possibly the most fun, kind-hearted person on earth. She's always ready to do fun things for others :)

The colors in the pics are kind of washed-out. The colors are primarily red; no pink. I think a boy will wear most if not all, and if he rejects any, maybe they can be passed on to other patients. Rooting hard for the kid :)

First was Baker's Magical Propeller Beanie of Health. It was accepted and treated with the reverence such a garment deserves.

Next came the beige mushroom hat from Troppus Josh put it in and waived his arms saying 'I'm a mushroom! I'm a mushroom!'

Finally he put on the purple and red Afro hat. He started screaming and jumping around with glee!

Thank you so much ladies - you've made a sweet little boy very happy. :)

I'm glad the beanie has found a good home. Several years ago I got it at WorldCon, where that hat was one of the most popular souvenirs at the con.

Another Doper once wore it, when she had chemo, and she sent me a picture. If you can post pics(I know there may be privacy issues) that would be great.
