They Call Me Sneeze
02-24-2001, 06:53 PM
and anyone else who has met on the boards. (atleast i thought all of you guys had met on these boards. you are all friends and you post, in any case.)
anyway: what do you call eachother in real life? by poster names or real names?
and what do people do at dopefests? is it "hey euty" this and "yo iampuhna, get me a beer," or whatever, or does everyone go by steve and tom and elsie and whatever?
this might seem like a stupid question (hey, maybe it is) but in your posts, you always use poster names. everyone always uses poster names, it seems, so i was just curious...
and i'm sorry if i have incorrectly inferred something, or anything, but it seemed like all you guys are together in some sort of sense.
from,
sneeze, but only on these boards
pricciar

I don't know about anyone else, but most people seem to call me Pat at the dopefests.(Well, also under their breath I can hear them call me Jerk, Twathead, and Pincushioner. But, that just might be the voices in my head. Which actually, have no bearing on this. So, I would ask you to mind your own damn business. I am not on trial here!!!!) pricciar is a pain in the butt to pronounce. I don't even know how to say it. So it is easier just to tell people to call me Pat.
When I talk to other people, I refer to them as both their screen name and their reall name. Once, I learn their name I tend to call them that, but after a while I might have a brain fart and forget someone's name. At that point, I just go back to the screen name, which is usually easier to remember.

Wow, my name in a thread subject for the second time today.
Anyway, at Dopefests I introduce myself as Montfort. But, most people recognise me from the people pages, as well as my other exploits, so they knew that.
Once I get to know someone, first names will come out.
As for Anniz and I, we've always called each other by our first names. Now, we have pet nicknames. :)

Hmm . . . I let people call me whatever they want, really. weirddave calls me punha (he pronounces it "poona") or Pat. Falcon calls me hon or pat or patrick or punny or such. ssskuggiii calls me . . . well, hehehe. She calls me paddy, mostly. andygirl calls me punha and even pronounces it (mostly) right! sqrl calls me poonha.
Really, folks, it's not that hard to say. And the U is not hard. Just as the proper way to pronounce ssskuggiii is not "skoojee", the proper way (because it was my way and I made the "word") to pronounce iampunha is thus:
I-am-p'n-ha. Call me Patrick IRL if it's easier. Or punny or punha or pun or iam or whatever. People make up all sorts of crazy nicknames for me:)
Persephone
02-24-2001, 07:52 PM
xploder and I have become most excellent friends IRL since meeting here on the boards. We rarely refer to each other by our real names, though. Usually we use some sort of highly offensive slang. :D
Una Persson
02-24-2001, 07:58 PM
Fierra and I met here, of course. I call her by her real name, because it is a very pretty name and I love it; she calls me "Una" because I don't care for my real name.
Fanny May
02-24-2001, 08:42 PM
The dopefest parties can use either usernames or both user and real names. Using just real names is too confusing.
But this is no different than class reunions, where maiden names also appear on the name tags.
Scotticher
02-24-2001, 10:03 PM
My good friends call me Cheri, which is my real name.
At PNW Dopefests, people call me Scotti or Cheri, both are acceptable and comfortable for me.
Actually, I don't care what people call me. It is the feeling BEHIND what they call me that matters to me.

The Dopefest I went to we mostly used screennames, because that's how we knew each other. After a little conversation, some people switched to real names. Of course, that also depends on how bad your screen name is...( I answer to almost anything...)
The 2 people I know FROM the board whom I talk to off the board we use our real names.
Minor peeve: people on the boards who start a thread using screennames and switch to real names. Sometimes other participants in the thread are left saying "Bob? Who's Bob?".
Satan
02-24-2001, 10:55 PM
Hard to believe it, but Drain Bead and myself do call each other our real names (Libby and Brian, respectively), though we also have a habit of calling each other nauseating nicknames such as "honey," "angel," "darling, "lover" and other things guaranteed to make people scoff at us.
At Dopefests, I'll answer to either, though I can tell that people have a perverse thrill in telling wait staffs that they're waiting on Satan to show up and what-not...
Falcon
02-24-2001, 11:56 PM
FTR, I scoff at Libby and Brian often. ;)
Hrm. Depends on who it is, really....I call DB, Satan, and punha by their real names. Almost everyone else I use their screennames.
And most people at Dopefests use my screenname. I'll also usually answer to "Hey you." :D

I've been to several dopefests now and generally people call me Bob. I usually fail to respond because my name is Mike.

I prefer calling people by their real names. The one exception is Coldie. For the life of me I cannot call him anything but that!

02-25-2001, 01:13 AM
I've just returned from our Samedi Gras dopefest, and can report that not only did we call each other by a mixture of screennames and real names, at least one of the non-SDMB attendees was addressed by and responded to a screenname (an old handle of his, pressed into service for the occasion).
It mostly seems to depend on the difficulty in remembering/pronouncing the names. The opinion of the person being addressed matters, too--psiekier is less than pleased with the pronunciation "pee-seeker", so we all call him by his IRL name. I, on the other hand, am almost always addressed as "Balance" rather than "John"--which is fine with me.
It all boils down to "whatever makes people comfortable".
psycat and I feel so left out of the OP... ;)
That's what happens when you slack off, I guess.
Anyway, we call each other our real names, except on the board, of course. As far as Dopefests, it's usually a mix. Many of the people here end up getting called their real names even on the board, like Pat up there. I never refer to him as pricciar. Anyways, I felt bad about calling him "prick" IRL (I have no qualms about calling him that behind his back.) Anyone with exceedingly long, or hard to pronounce names usually ends up being called their real name, though. ;)
Weirddave
02-25-2001, 01:45 AM
Pat, FTR, I usually call you "PAT" ( strange, huh?) or, when nicks are apropriate, "pun". And if I wanna pronounce it "poona", well, it's your fault for chosing such a weird nick. Nicks should not have to come with an english/nick nick/english dictionary.
Falc, You never call me "Weirddave". You usually call me "hon", which makes me feel all warm and giggly inside as I realize that.....you call everyone "hon". Hmmmph! ;)

Earlier a poster lamented the mix of board names and real names within a single post. I understand this may be confusing, and I normally don't do it, except in the "Get well, keep me in your thoughts" type threads in which to add (at least in my mind) a more personal/human touch, I will sign my own real name. On the two or three occasions where I have interacted via e-mail with other posters, I'll tag it with my real name and parenthetically with Sir Rhosis. If the e-mails continue after that I use my real name every time. Just me though, my HO.

For Montreal Dope, Dewt and Dylan had some problems getting out to the pub, so I called them a few times to see how things were going. The last time, it went:
-Hello?
-Hi. Dewt?
-...uh, what?
- Um, um, ah...
-...Do you mean John?
-Yeah, John!
-I'm the babysitter. He's left to go to some kind of ...meeting.
-okthanksbye :click:
And of course, Andygirl and LaurAnge are laughing their asses off at my expense... :o

Some call me Chiefy. They also have a penchant for using smilies...

Now on to the OP...
I went to my first DopeFest last night. It was pretty much all screen names. Then again, there were only four of us and lots of music. I also talk to quite a few Dopers on the phone or via e-mail. For the most part, I usually change from screen name to real name (or reasonable facismile thereof) But when I talk to others from the board about someone I've gotten to know more personally, I use screen names for the most part. Just trying to keep it less confusing! :)

I've had this handle since 1984. This handle is old enough to get its driver's license. (And if it can manage it, I'll let it.)
I answer to my handle just as readily as I answer to y real name. Possibly moreso, since when people find out my real name they tend to pronounce it sotto voce until they figure out how to say it, whereas people who have just met me are more than willing to bellow, "Hey, HAMMY!!!"
I've always felt weird about calling people by their real names. I feel as though it gives me some sort of strange power over them. I prefer handles whenever possible, quite honestly...though I don't mind at all when people call me by MY name.

Brace yourselves....."Max" is not my real name. But I've been using this name so long (since 1991, at least) that I'll answer to it, so if you wanna call me "Max", that's just fine. Heck, I know people I first met as "Max" in the early 90s who still call me that to my face, and I'm cool with it. I've only been to a couple of 'fests, but at both, everyone clearly preferred the "Max".

Most people, in chat, IRL, or here call me Robin or Robyn. Which is fine with me, because it's my real name. I've been using this as an online name since 1996, when I learned how to use IRC.
Robin
Well, not that I've ever been to a dopefest, but I probably won't respond to my real name, as it is never used.
My friends usually call me by my handle because it's my nickname in real life (which is why I chose it.) And my family calls me Drew (which is close to, but not, my real name.)
So at any dopefest it would be better for me to be called bouv. (Of course, bouv needs a dopefest in his area first (Albany area), and NO, he will not orginize it, he's bad at those sort of things.)
I've been Rasa online for like... 9 years or so, so there are a lot of people who only know me as Rasa. At Dopefests, I generally go by Rasa, cuz it's a very name-like screenname. Some people I think of by their real names, but most of the Bay Area Dopers have such name-like screennames that I can't think of them as anything else. Sue Duhnym will always be Sue, Doobieous will always be Doob, Jack Batty will always be Jack, and I have no idea what Snooooopy's real name is!
As far as what I call oldscratch, I definitely call him by his real name. It's a really cool name, and fits him.

Albany, NY? If/when I manage to get up there for my sister's wedding (if she manages to get married!, mybe we can work something out. I'm going to be down in Delaware County, and Albany wouldn't be too far of a drive for me to go.... But you'd have to make the arrangements, 'cause I don't know Albany...

Well, I'm sure if I had ever met any one on these boards in real life, I would never live down the name "Katie". That or "Trixie". I assume thats what I'd be called IRL other than "Asshole", as used in such text as "Hey Asshole, you're an asshole!" or something like that.

I've never met anyone in real life :( but even when I get e-mail from people they usually still refer to me as Euty (never Eutychus, for some reason) instead of my real name which is Fahnstock P. Beaudrey.
Nymysys
02-25-2001, 05:20 PM
I've met so many people from the boards (and other computer-related activities) IRL, and Nym seems to be my moniker of their choice. It's been my all-purpose screen name for going on four years now, and even people that have known me for that period of time and are really good friends still call me Nym. I'm okay with it, although I had no idea it would turn into my name when I first picked it.
There are one or two people that refer to me by my real name, but these are people that I hang out with constantly and consistently, FWIW.
andygirl
02-25-2001, 05:41 PM
Andy is not my real name. It's from my middle name, and it's what quietgirl calls me. Funny thing is, I've gotten to prefer it over my real name. Whenever I go to dopefests, I just tell people that I prefer to be called Andy.
It is very strange at points, though... matt_mcl had a hard time calling me "Andy" after three years of knowing me by my real name.
At dopefests... well, it depends on the person. Some first names are just easier than their usernames.

They Call Me Sneeze
02-25-2001, 10:58 PM
Interesting, interesting.
It's kind of relieving that couples seem to call eachother by their real names, rather than by their screennames. Not that all the screennames arent cool, but - well, I dont know what I would do if my guy called out, in a fit of orgiastic extasy - "oh, Sneeze, Sneeze!" It would just be weird.
I wouldnt mind if people called me Sneeze in real life. Everybody calls me by my real name - I get no variety. Jes, do this, Jes, do that, Jes, have you been into my stash. Of course, no one in real life would know to call me Sneeze, so it's ok. If I ever somehow went to a Dopefest or something - it might be nice to be called Sneeze.
And Democritus and psycat, I am dreadfully, terribly sorry for leaving you out of the OP! It's very nice, though, to know you call eachother by your real names.
Hamadryad, I didn't even know that they had Internet back in 1984. That is impressive that you have kept the same name for so long.
And Iampunha, I always pronounced your name "I imPUNE ya." Kind of like it was supposed to be a trick name, like Sue Duhnym, but a kind of lame one. I'm still not sure how you pronounce it, but I am glad to know I was wrong.
Anyway - back to my monologue about cats.

Seriously, what did you think we called each other? We're in a full-fledged honest-to-Cecil relationship. We're both real people and interact in real, honest, non-virtual ways. Right now, the SDMB is just a small part of our relationship, it's just the place where we met. If we met, for example, as being cast members of, say, RHPS, would you think I call her Janet offstage?
At Dopefests, I have to remember to introduce her to people as Anniz; when introducing her to non-Dopers I just have to make sure I don't mispronounce her real name. :P
I'm still flattered that you mentioned us in the subject.

Okay, I've met you twice now, Rasa, and I have to admit, I can't remember what your real name is! So I guess you'll continue being Rasa to me. Oldie has a very short, unusual name that I am afraid of mispronouncing, so he remains Oldie. I have tried calling Doob by his real name, and it just doesn't work out so well.
Mine is easy. I should change my handle, it's so boring.
Una cosa más. Back on the old AOL SDMB, we tended to call each other by our first names more than here, so I still use the first names of anyone who was a reg there, even if they rarely use them here. i.e., Libby is Libby and never DrainBead, and Cyndar will always be Princess (Mich)Elle. :) Main exception is Opal. I know what Opal's real name is, but I don't think I've ever used it once.
Having been to a handful of dopefests around the country, overall, most people seem to refer to each other by way of their screen names. As for me, once I get to know someone better (IRL), I tend to use their real name instead of their board name. IRL I prefer to go by my real name--Mike.

Uh, I've been using Homer for a long time now, and I've responded to it in the past, sometimes when they weren't even referring to me . I'm not sure if anyone on this board even knows my name, I don't think I've revealed it in ANY of my posts.
Pat: It's pronounced "Prissy-arrr" like a femme pirate.
Punha: Don't we usually just refer to you as ::sigh:: and ::rolleyes::? ;)
Katie: Remember, YOU brought those names on to yourself! You encouraged them even! Don't shirk them in their time of need!
Silver: If we were alone together I'm sure I'd call you many things, but I doubt if Silver would be one of them. ;)
Silo: You are Silo. Deal with it.

A few years back, my wife got my cat a driver's license. (She - the cat, that is - had just turned 16. :)) Can't see why your SN couldn't get one too...email me for details if you want.
My wife and I, who met IRL, almost never call each other by our given names; we use assorted endearments instead. If I hear my actual name from her lips, it usually means she's already called me three times, and I haven't heard her once. So I doubt she'd call me by my SN if we'd met online.
Around Dopers, I answer to RT, Rufus, Rufe, Firefly, and even my real name, if someone should use it.
Polycarp
02-26-2001, 01:25 PM
My wife often addresses me as "Poly" -- but we're weird anyway.
With a number of Brians that ended up in and out of our lives over the past few years, we usually refer to the gentleman from Columbus as Satan -- but to his partner-in-crime as Libby. Most everyone else we know from real life we refer to about 50:50 by screen or real name. Except SqrlCub, who is always Sqrl (with the vowels, just like the rodent), mostly because we can't decide whether to use his first or middle name, and whichever we choose, we have to explain it by the screen name anyway. And RTFirefly, but there's a special story there: I misunderstood his first name as ending with P instead of M when I first heard it, so it's easier to refer to him as "RT" or "Rufus" than remembering which name really belongs to him!
Oh, and "Silo" -- nobody wants to remember your real name! :D

I don't know about Dopefests (yet; roll on Amsterdam :)), but when the Dublin contingent meets in the pub it's real names all the way. I'm sure we could go with screen names but it would feel a bit self-conscious. Having said that, I wouldn't use a real name on the board, since people may value the anonymity.

I pronounce it "I-am-p'n-ha". Think of the "p'n" as the "pn" in "pneu". Only reverse the stressing. Or maybe in "op'ning". The U sound is almost nonexistent. Remember, this is a word I made when I was two and a half. It's not supposed to make sense. Nor is it one of those names like Shirley Ujest, Sue Duhnym or Sir Rhosis.

good evening friends,
if you look at my post count, compared to the date i registered, i may be the champion lurker. i have never been to a dopefest, but would love to attend one.
to the o.p. many years ago, before i ever thought of such a thing as the internet i was given my knickname by my father-in-law. for the three years my wife and i were together before we were married, as far as he was concerned i was "that longhaired s.o.b my daughter goes out with." after the wedding(in 1975, hence the 75 part of my screen name), and for many years after that i was "that longhaired s.o.b. my daughter married."
a co worker went back to my boss after spending a few days as my assistant and stated "if i have to work with that crazy longhaired s.o.b. again i quit!"
at this date, longhair has become more than just a knickname or an online handle.

Hell, why don't we just get a hold of Flymaster and have lunch over in the McNeill Room? Which is something that, in four and a half damn years here, I've never actually done. I mean, I go to the same college as two other dopers and I've never even met them. That's kinda pathetic. Or, I can be found way too often in JEC 3207 or CII 3113 (where I am right now).
And if we do meet, you can call me Jeremy, which is my first name. I don't really use waterj2 IRL.

Well, I have yet to date anyone from this board (or any other board for that matter), but at the DopeFests, I typically get called Joph. Or Jo. Or, if Omni is around, JoJo. As others have said, I've been using this nick since about 1993, so it's instinctive for me to respond to it.
I don't think I've had anyone take the time to actually pronounce Jophiel in its entirety at a Fest though. Slackers.

As has been stated already, Demo and I call each other by our real names, of course. But as you can see by our posts, we refer to each other by our screen names online, be it chat, or a message board, the one exception being our livejournals, since those are 'real life' so to speak.
We do it just because it's how people know us, and after all, these are names we got to choose, so we must like them. No one ever gets to choose their birth name.
I have met lots of folks IRL, most of whom I refer to by their screen name, with the exception of a few. I prefer that people call me by my screen name at meetings, partly because I don't want to have to remember 20 names I've never heard and I don't want to be rude. So, you don't try to remember my name, I won't try to remember yours, especially since most meetings involve drinking. And partly because I kind of like my screen name, (this comes up at every dopefest I have been to, it's sigh-cat, not pussycat.) psy works just fine.

Hey, if you guys don't mind an old fogey like myself tagging along, count me in. I'm just up the road in Saratoga. I haven't met any Dopers IRL yet. I thought about going to the Montreal Dopefest (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=56816), but the timing didn't work. If they have another one, maybe we could get a group to go up.
To keep this from being a complete hijack: for some reason, I don't think I'd care whether people called me by my real name or my screen name.

I've got no objection to old fogeys. Polycarp is somewhere north of you, I think, and RealityChuck is in Schenectady. Hmmm... this idea might have some promise.

andygirl . . . well, I tried. I don't care in the end, but if people don't know how to pronounce my name, I figure why not tell them? I don't mind people calling me "poona".

Don't be sorry - why should they care? Fierra and I were also left out, and we're not broken hearted over it.

You can call me watever you want to, but don't call me late for dinner.
:Ender graciously accepts award for most pitiful excuse for a joke in a thread:
So anyway, I've never met a doper in real life. While I've had this SN (or a close facimile thereof) for 5+ years, no one IRL has ever called me Ender. Can't say I'd mind it all that much, I've grown quite used to responding to it online that I don't think it would be weird to do so offline. If, however, you call me EnderW24 IRL I shall have to bitch slap you for the cyber geek that you are. Honestly, do you refer to websites by its numerical address? You're the kind of person that's memorized pi out to the 10,000th digit just because you can.
Now, as far as responding to others with their real name: if you haven't given it to me, I won't use it even if I already know it.

Hey! We care. Heheh, I didn't see this until Anth pointed it out. I was just joshin' ya, Sneeze. I guess psy and I have been lax in our posting responsibilities lately. ;)

Hey Friend Longhair! (cool, I've always wanted to say that!!)
Well, as I used to use my real name on the board, most people called my by it. It dosent make much of a difference to me. Of course, Coldy refers to me as "Mr." which always make me laugh.

I dont know about the sdmb, but I spent two weeks in Amsterdam with an online friend, and it was just a weird mix of screen name and real name. In the last days I just called her "big momma" but we are both fuckheads..

Chief, would you rather we call you Sir?! ::insert big smiley here::
Euty, you are commanded to report to the Michigan Dopefest promptly on June 24th at xploder's house! And that goes for all the rest of you non-Dopefest-attendin' so-n-so's!
At the last MI Dopefest, it was a mix of screen names. I call Persephone by her real name but most everyone else, it was the screen name because I am PITIFUL with names. I'd probably forget my own name if I didn't have this nametag on my mittens (j.k.)!
It was weird sitting in the middle of a very full restaurant calling someone "Mrblue" or "Hey, thinksnow" :D

But wait a second, she said it was "weird". Does that mean by extension she thinks I'm weird? It's not like I'm giving her any reason to think so right now... But then maybe she likes weird.

:blurting out:
"Hey, BunnyGirl, do you like weird people?"
:stunning realization I'm a complete idiot:
"Uh, nevermind." :)
BTW I'm absolutely terrible with names, too...

Mrblue, come here, let me hit you with this "clue" stick! We'll have no paranoid meanderings around here, mister! :D Of course I remember you, sill! Are you coming to the DopeFest in June?

Hey! My name. Who's the third one? And who where now? Just call me Mike. Or Supreme Lord High Master of the Universe. Whichever is easier.

Hey, I live just south of Albany! And y'all can call me Jeffie, Jenn, Jennifer, or any variation thereof. I would answer to racin or chikkiboo, though.

You left out me and Jeffie (aka racinchikki :-D), too.
Most people IRL address me by my last name, for no particular reason.
