Okay - it's Friday afternoon, the boss just left, and tonight I get to go to pub trivia on Mel Brooks & Monty Python movies.

What is making you smile this afternoon?

I look sharp today (to my own surprise, heh). I bought a new pair of capris, hunter green, that look great on my skin tone and my legs, and I am wearing a billowy gray&white&black shirt that's a little low-cut, with high-heeled sandals and appropriate jewelry. I look casual yet sexy and my hair is acting wonderfully today, too. It's rare everything comes together just so!

My son was talking about teachers this morning and mentioned a certain Mr. Hiscock.

I really tried to be the adult, but I couldn't help but snort a tiny bit. To which he said "I know, right!" And so we both chuckled like a couple of 12 year olds. Even though I'm 49.

Yesterday I got an e-mail for an interview next week at a place I never would have dreamed would be interested in me -it's the absolute brass ring for my field IMO. My expectations are low, but it's all I can think about today. I'd have to sell my house, move away from friends and family - but it would be one of the greatest opportunities I've ever had.

Yeah - not every Friday has been like that for me lately - but woo!!

It's fun when you can laugh with kids without explanation. My last phone convo with my dad was talking about his "walking briskly" with my stepmum (fyi -
"walking briskly" is one of the signs listed in his after-heart attack brochure 'so when can i have sex again?'). His death was unexpected - and I cling to the fact that my last words with him were so much fun.

This morning heard from the Prospective Boyfriend who had dropped off the face of the earth for a few weeks. Still interested, abjectly apologetic, etc. Happy to be able to cut him some slack and give him another chance, rather than being left wondering what went wrong.

I was tossing some stale popcorn out in the yard for the birds and a male cardinal swooped in and landed about a foot from my feet. I froze in place, he cheeped a couple times, turned his head to look right up at me, then flew off. I think it startled us both, but it sure made me smile!

Oh... and I normally work on Saturdays but took tomorrow off because it's my birthday-#51, ugh- so I have a 3 day weekend ahead of me.

I had a frog lead the way up the walk Thursday night - it was quite amusing. I love cardinals, but sometimes they are tad bit blonde - we have ones that keep flying in to my bf's glass window, stun themselves, and then get up and fly off.

And happy birthday to you! 51 is nothing to ugh about. 51 is the new 41 :)

Does that mean 41 is the new 31? (o pleez o pleez)

I had my annual mammogram today and through the wonders of modern digital imaging they called me within an hour to tell me I was all clear for another year. With my family history of early breast cancer (sister diagnosed at 27, dead at 38) that's enough to make me happy. Even though I have a visible bruise on my left boob and my whole chest hurts. :)

I have a couple of good friends coming to my house, a bottle of white wine chilling in the fridge, several bottles of red prepared to follow. I'm sure they'll appreciate my cooking, no matter how it comes out. (The wine will help with this.)

Also, and unrelated: my fiance & I got the office (aka the worst room) somewhat tidied at the end of May. <i>It's stayed that tidy.</i>

A friend I thought had decided to drop me came by the other day. With her husband & four month little boy! Turns out she'd just had to go away from the city for awhile, and our language barrier made it hard to communicate everything that was going on. (She's Korean & I'm American - the talking is sometimes hard, but always worth it.)

I guess that makes us 31, then. :)

I had to smile yesterday, because my parents took Spike to the zoo down in Columbia as a present for his fourth birthday. Not only did he have a great time, but he also made sure he walked slow enough for his Grandma (who'd gotten a new hip this past March), and he was one of the best behaved children there. That last part is amazing, since that child had a severe case of crazy.

My smile got bigger last night, because my parents had brought Allen & Son barbecue down from Raleigh. Mmmm.... barbecue.....

I had to laugh this morning when my father came downstairs. Squeaky (2) let out a yelp when he saw him, and screamed, "G'an-daddy!!!!" He turned around in his chair looked at me fixing breakfast, pointed back to my father, and shouted, "Dad-dee! G'an-daddy!!"

So exciting! For as little interest as I have in being pregnant, I do enjoy chatting about pregnancy and babies and the fun aspects of children.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow morning, when I shall go to watch the Fremont Solstice Parade (http://fremontartscouncil.org/fremont-solstice-parade/), a truly unique event. The floats are all human-powered, and are not allowed to have any abstract symbols on them (so no corporate logos or silly slogans). Plus, it is preceded and intermingled with the famous body-paint-or-maybe-just-naked bike ride, which is something to see.

You can google your own photos, if you want to see previous years.

So I smiled today because my lunch was sooo good. Potatoes and onions fresh off the grill in the caf (it's a big mama thing.)

I smiled because my coworker wore stripper shoes today, and she keeps doing little hot dances.

I smiled because the sales gods have been smiling on me today. Making some great bonuses.

My new washing machine gets delivered in an hour after our old one decided to empty water all over the laundry room last weekend. Shiny new stuff!

My new job means an across country relocation and all the stresses that go along with that and selling a house in the current market but it is a great deal for our little family and my husband talked to his new boss today and called me all excited about his new job and how much he liked his boss. Made me smile to hear him so excited and happy.

I have steaks marinading for supper and plans for a lazy weekend.

Lots of reasons to smile today :D

"Dad-dee! G'an-daddy!!"

I'm happy because of

- the lack of sports withdrawal; the CFL preseason started on the last day of the NHL finals, and the two overlap in the fall

- I bought some new clothes this week that I love, and got a lot of items for a good price

- tomorrow we are going to visit the inlaws and see my SIL's baby boy, who is one week old today

- my sister and her husband are settling in very well in their new city, she loves her new job and the hot-tub in her rental house is just a bonus

I regret to say that I cannot come clean yours. I have a commitment to get my office ACTUALLY in shape, and I gave myself a whole year to do it in. That's how bad I am at dealing with the crap that accumulates in offices.

Now I want a card catalog. Somehow, I'm convinced it will make my life better by giving me places for some of those little bits of office flotsam. And be pretty. Alas, the office is also the tiniest room, so no space!

I tend to eat all the things he thinks are gross - sushi, lamb, fish mostly. Plus I get the remote to myself (for the very little I want to see on TV), and can just enjoy a quiet house. Mr saje likes to have the TV on all the time, or tunes or an audiobook. I like those too, but not always. I like my peace and quiet and solitude :)

Thanks to just a little bit of campaigning, I now have enough members going out on strike that it looks like they're going to have to close the school.
I had a really nice time at the pub with some people from work who I haven't spent a lot of time with but like a lot.
My brother is bringing his family over from the States unexpectedly. It'll be at a bad time for me and I may struggle to see them, but it'll make the rest of my family happy.

Cherries are in season and the local orchard is selling magnificent Bings, Rainiers and other varietals. Cherries are one of the best fruits in the world, and it's sheer luxury to be able to buy big bags of them and cram them into your face. They're among the lowest-carb fruits, too, I understand, so I try to assuage my guilt by thinking of that.

I am smiling wryly at the ironic situation I am in WRT my impending divorce. I am sad about the whole affair, but I can smile because I know its for the best for all concerned (especially our boys), I don't have to deal with my miscreant step-daughter ever again and the objective part of me knows that my wife and I were never meant to be and that we stayed together because of pregnancies and sex.

This whole situation has me in an emotional whirlwind but I can still manage a smile as long as I don't dwell on what could have been. Not that it matters anymore.

The carpenter who has been rebuilding my shower finished it today. I still can't use it because the caulk needs to dry for 24 hours and the plumber has to come back tomorrow to install the shower head, etc. But, it looks awesome!

We bought this house in January of 2010. In February of 2010 the tiles in our only shower started falling off. Between coming up with the money and then losing it on unexpected emergencies, finding contractors and then having them bail on us, it took us over a year to get the job started. It was a pain to deal with and caused us a lot of stress. We had to keep relining the shower walls with heat-shrink window plastic to minimize the water damage to the walls. The bathroom smelled nasty because nothing I did would keep the shower clean and the exposed 60 year old tiling stuff stank.

I was unsure of the plumber/carpenter combo we ended up with but it didn't take long for them to make me comfortable with their work. They have both been great and the fact that they're family friends (not mine - each other's families) means they communicate very well and unlike our last remodel, we had no lost time due to mis-communication between the guys.

They both came across annoying problems and both of them dealt with them in a timely manner. They both loved my dogs and spent time playing with them every day they were here. The carpenter walked into the house this morning and the first words out of his mouth were a happy birthday to my boyfriend.

All in all, this has been the best home remodel project I've ever dealt with. I am so glad I found these guys and I'll definitely be using them again.

By the way, did I mention that MY SHOWER IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! :D

Before (after I took the plastic down to prepare for the demolition) (http://s862.photobucket.com/albums/ab183/spike1380/?action=view&current=009.jpg)

After (http://s862.photobucket.com/albums/ab183/spike1380/?action=view&current=009.jpg#!oZZ3QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs862.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab183%2Fspike1380%2F%3F action%3Dview%26current%3D012.jpg) As you can see, my floor tiling job isn't as nice as his and the ugly ass pink tiles and blue wallpaper are still...ugly. But the shower really improves the whole room.

After 2 (http://s862.photobucket.com/albums/ab183/spike1380/?action=view&current=009.jpg#!oZZ2QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs862.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab183%2Fspike1380%2F%3F action%3Dview%26current%3D016.jpg) Our formerly fugly tub. It's pinkish beige, just like the old tiles. Damn bathroom was hideous (and it had carpet). That stupid tub made the whole thing harder. The shower is slightly bigger than 4'x4' but has a full size tub because of the angle. The addition of the new tiles completely changes the look of the tub and I love it now. The fact that it's in perfect condition makes me even happier.

After 3 (http://s862.photobucket.com/albums/ab183/spike1380/?action=view&current=009.jpg#!oZZ1QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs862.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab183%2Fspike1380%2F%3F action%3Dview%26current%3D019.jpg) Our new vent fan - to bring the shower up to code.

Today has been a really good day.

In addition to the shower -

I found out today that my boyfriend has an interview next week for a possible promotion. If they stick to what they said and give it to one of the engineers, he has a 50% chance of getting it because only 2 of the 3 applied for it. If they give the promotion based on breadth and depth of knowledge and skill, he'll get the job. If they give the promotion based on ability to kiss corporate ass and follow rigid guidelines (which is a very bad thing in his field but good to corporate people), then the other guy will get it. I hope that for once they actually make a decision that will benefit the department.

I finally got my desk clean today. My beading projects were getting out of control and it was interfering with my ability to do my homework at my desk.

The new shower curtain that we bought today has frogs on it. Huge frogs.

I found out today that there's a 95% chance that my beloved sister will be coming to visit me next weekend.

I also found out today that there's a 100% chance that my beloved sister will be paying back the $300 I lent her when she was out of work for surgery a year ago.

My boyfriend loves the rocket I gave him for his birthday today.

We had an awesome lunch at the local diner today and I had the cream of veggie soup and it's my new absolute favorite soup. Next time I go and it's on the menu, I'm just going to get 4 cups of that and nothing else. It was heavenly.

I took 5 quizzes today and I got a 97 on one of them an 100 on the other 4.

I read the wrong chapter for one of my quizzes (turns out it was ASSIGNMENT 10, not CHAPTER 10). I took a chance and took the chapter 22 quiz without reading it because I had a deadline to meet. I still got a 100 on it because it was an introduction to Microbiology and that's an interest of mine.

The only decent, friendly neighbors we ever had, who moved away 5 years ago, dropped by to visit since they were in the area (and they were curious as to how their ex-house, a real showplace, was being kept up). Not only are they in good health and doing well in retirement, they admitted they should never have moved in the first place and they miss their ex-house (and ex-neighbors and the 'hood) terribly. I never could ask them why they moved. But they are great people and I'm glad they are doing well, it was fun talking with them again.

Today is the first time I've consciously smiled with an open mouth in about 5 years.

After much procrastinating, I finally sat in the dentist's chair this afternoon. They extracted the remaining 12 upper teeth and 1 troublesome lower molar, threw in one or two stitches, slapped a full upper denture into my bleeding gums and sent me on my way with a vicodin prescription.

The bleeding has finally come to a halt. Aside from the steady throb, my mouth is mostly just very very confused: I can't stop salivating for the life of me, and have not yet mastered the art of swallowing comfortably - which is an annoying combination, to say the least.

Also, to say that I have a slight lisp would be an understatement.

The whole thing put me back about $3k (after insurance), but I'm very impressed with the look of the denture - the new teeth look pretty much exactly like my old teeth, except without all the cavities, rot, and missing teeth.

Photo, if anyone is interested: (apologies in advance for having not shaved recently)

My son was talking about teachers this morning and mentioned a certain Mr. Hiscock.

I really tried to be the adult, but I couldn't help but snort a tiny bit. To which he said "I know, right!" And so we both chuckled like a couple of 12 year olds. Even though I'm 49.A man named Hiscock who teaches junior high?

That is the bravest thing I have ever heard.

Congrats! They look great! I understand the lisp problem. I got a flipper a couple weeks ago after having a broken tooth pulled and the lisp I spent a couple years in speech therapy to get rid of came back as soon as I put it in. I wear the flipper off an on all day to keep the space from shifting but I avoid it as much as possible.

These happened earlier this week, but they still make me smile today, so I'm countin' em!

I pick my six-year-old niece up from Girl Scout camp on Tuesdays. When she saw me coming down the hall she starting jumping up and down and clapping. "Carol! Carol's here!!"

Later after her mom and little sister got home, lil sis (three-years-old) drew a picture of me, brought it to me, decided it needed... something... took it back, saying, "I give you a shit."

A. What?

"I give you a shit!"

SIL and I exchange looks.

SIL: "Honey, do you mean a shirt?"

Niece (exasperated): "Yeeesssss, mommy! A shit!"

I went to pick up some tickets my friend had won and they said "Ah, you must be ..... Daniel" I'm a girl.

The last time I went to that address it was looking for the previous owner, with the police ... he had refused to turn my car over to me. I was driving it this time. Ha!

My friend bought a chest of drawers from an irritating woman, looking for something I told him - you'll have to feel around in Jackson's drawers.

I'm sad because Betty Fox , mother of Terry Fox, has passed away (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/betty-fox-cancer-advocacy-champion-and-mother-of-terry-fox-dies/article2065487/page3/). I'm happy because of the amazing job she did carrying on her son's legacy raising money and awareness for cancer treatments. She had diabetes and arthritis, so in some ways she is as much a hero, or more, than her son, for continuing to work for all these years. All three diseases have affected close members of my family and/or close friends, and it's amazing how strong people can be.

The Terry Fox Run should be renamed: the Terry and Betty Fox Run, but she wouldn't want that.

One of my best friends is a cancer survivor and oncology nurse: I need to call her and remind her how awesome she is! :)

After many challenges, my daughter graduated from high school yesterday, and earned herself a couple of scholarships which will completely pay for tuition, books and fees for two years at community college, and a fair portion of state college tuition after that.

Leaving the office after a really rough day and a man walked by me holding his small daughter. As they passed I waved at her and she waved right back and said bye bye in a happy little baby voice! The dad was so surprised that he turned back to see who she was talking to and we all three cracked up.

It really is the little things I guess :)

I rode my scooter beside my scooting bud on the way to work and back home. The sun was shining each way, and I loved looking over at him while we were riding down the road, together.:D

lunch, stripper shoes, and money? Where exactly do you work? :dubious: I hear brown chicken, brown cow . . . :D

I love that joke!

You know what had me laughing today? A librarian I know posted this as her facebook status: regular patron just reported that a woman in the parking lot is rolling a lint roller all over the torso of a shirtless, tattoo-ed man and has been doing so for some time. Ah, the public library...
This totally sounds like an average weekend day when I was working in the public library. Weirdness makes the job more fun to work.

Can I mention to you briefly that I love your strangely angled tub? I wonder if one can acquire a tub like that these days...

Little kids can be really cute; we had a little boy cheerfully say "Hi!" at us the other day when we were in the Goodwill.

My Friday was spent flying cross country from Anaheim back to Myrtle Beach.

I got home around 11:44pm, and saw my 5 year old son for the first time since Tuesday.

That made me smile.

I smiled today because I found an amazing place to hike just minutes from my home.

I saw so many awesome animals, plants, and insects...and took some great pictures.
Great Herons, several flocks of American White Pelicans, giant Bullfrogs, Nutria, Dragonflies. Such a fantastic day!

Thanks for starting a thread for me to tell y'all about it.

That makes me smile, too! Congrats!

I’m smiling because my POS 25 year old beat up convertible truck (beloved because it hauls me and my kayak to all the places I enjoy) stalled in the middle of traffic and stranded me. While wearing a sundress and sandals. In 90 degree weather. With a dangerous, fast moving thunderstorm about ½ mile away and bearing down fast. With no money for a tow and no one nearby to call for a ride. I kicked off the sandals, popped the hood, climbed up on the bumper, leaned over the gnarly 302 guts, pried the clips off the air filter housing, squirted started fluid in. 3 times. It roared to life. Made it home safely. :)
