We are taking a family vacation to Wyoming later this summer. (Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, etc.) The kids haven't spent any time between St. Louis and California, so they have no idea what that part of the country is like. I'd like to find a few books set in that region to read before we go, just so the kids have some sort of context in mind. Movies would be good, too. The kids are 9 and 5. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Are they old enough for Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

One of my favorites, and it ought to be appropriate for your kids too, is Spencer's Mountain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer%27s_Mountain). It's a family show and served as the inspiration for The Waltons. Talk about some beautimous scenery.

Shane. The movie may seem to quaint for youngsters, but it was based on a book that I haven't read. Great cinematography in the movie though. I remember some quote about Wyoming being the real star of the movie.

The 9 year old may be old enough to watch or read "A River Runs Through It". It's Montana, not Wyoming, but the features are very similar to what you'll find in GT/Yellowstone. (There are some adult moments, so you'll want to familiarize yourself with it first.)

My Friend Flicka, novel and movie both, were set in Wyoming.
