View Full Version : Has anyone else never ridden in the back seat of their own car?

I just realized tonight that Ive owned my car for 3 years and have never even sat in the back, much less ridden in the back, of my own vehicle. In fact I can't think of any time I've ridden in the back seat of any car I've owned. This struck me as strange for some reason.
Questions to answer:
Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before?
How long have you owned it?
If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving?
If you have not have you at least SAT in back?
Is this the most bizarre thread you've seen started on the SDMB today?

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before? - I don't think so, because I'm just about the only one who drives my car (partly because the main two other people who would've had an opportunity couldn't drive stick shift). If one of my parents are driving, we generally take their car or there is just the tow of us.
Mom points out I might have one time the family went up to my grandparents. My mom or dad would be driving.
How long have you owned it? - since 2004
If you have not have you at least SAT in back? - often. I usually have lunch lounging in the back.
Is this the most bizarre thread you've seen started on the SDMB today? - Today? Maybe, but not likely.

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before? Yes
How long have you owned it? Since 2007
If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving? It used to be my grandfather's car. I rode in the back when he still owned it and would drive us around when we visited him. The last time was when I was about 15. Since the car was passed on to me, I have never ridden in the back. I think I've only even had passengers back there once, when I gave 2 friends a ride from the (closer) lot I was parked in to their cars in a lot farther away. On the rare occasions I have passengers, they almost always ride shotgun and my backseat is full of junk.
If you have not have you at least SAT in back? Yes.
Is this the most bizarre thread you've seen started on the SDMB today? Nah. It did give me pause, though, as in "There's a mundane question that I've never thought about!"

My car will be 10 years old in November, and I've never sat anywhere but in the driver's seat. Nor have I had any reason to.

Yes. We have two cars, one my wife drives primarily and one I drive primarily. I know I have ridden in the back seat of hers many times, and I think my Fit which I've had about 2 years I must have been in the back at some point. My wife or kid would have been driving.

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before?
Before when? ;) But yes, I have.
How long have you owned it?
About a year-ish.
If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving?
I didn't feel like driving, so my husband drove. I sat in the back so I could converse with one of the other passengers.
If you have not have you at least SAT in back?
(Not applicable.)

Probably not. I'm sure someone started a thread dealing with bodily functions. Those tend to get weird because of the TMI, IMO.

Yes, coming back from a backpacking trip and very tired, I went back there to rest. At the time the car was about 6 months old, bought new, now 6 yrs. Another one on the trip drove for a bit. There were 4 of us 2 m/f couples and the person who offered to drive was in the other couple, so they sat together in the front.

I've owned my car for about seven years, and rode in the back seat for the first time last Christmas, when the only way we could fit in the stupid tree we'd bought was to put it in the passenger seat. I don't remember why I wasn't driving, but it felt very strange.

If you have not have you at least SAT in back? the Neon? yes. What the Mustang has isn't a back seat, it's penance.

I've been driving since 1976. I don't think I've ever riden in the back seat of one of my cars. I have sat in the back I'm sure. But just to see how much room there is or to clean.

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before?
A handful of times.
How long have you owned it?
Five years
If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving?
My husband and I bought something that was long enough we needed to fold down the front seat to fit it in, like a rug or Christmas tree.

Mixed answer. The Family Truckster, I have many times. The Beretta POS that I have as my go to work car, no, because I'm the only one that drives it. I've been in the back seat a couple of times to do stuff like change brake lights. but it was always parked.

I have a 1997 Acura Integra. As Consumer Reports said the year I bought it: The back seat is little more than a glorified grocery shelf.
The dog goes back there on long trips or if someone is in the front seat.
But grown up humans just won't fit well.
And I guess, to actually answer the question: No, I've never ridden in the back seat of my car.

Yes, I've ridden in the back of both our truck (purchased in 2005) and car (purchased in 2002). All times were due to us riding with a friend(s). I offer the front passenger seat to the guys because they have long legs and need more leg room then I do.

I have a friend who's the worst backseat driver ever! I figured out long ago the only way to deal the incessant bitching is to let him drive regardless of whose car it may be; this does not stop him from bitching and talking to himself non-stop but at least not directed toward my driving... I don't enjoy driving much anyway (just the ugly human nature that exudes out when people drive and the constant cat n' mouse game with speed traps etc... how many traffic cops/court judges drive the exact posted speed limit? Well I guess that's besides the point :dubious: ).
I've even sat in the backseat of my own cars chatting with other friends and it is quite enjoyable. There are things in your car that you never knew existed and how comfy it is: it is entirely different thing than sitting in someone else's backseat. I've always wanted a chauffeur and that's as close as I can have one.

I've ridden in the back seat of my car (2000 Saturn). One of my parents was probably driving, and it was probably part of a significant roadtrip.

Sometimes I'll ask that someone else drive my car, just so that I can experience riding in the backseat. I like it! (I only do this if I'm with two or more other people because riding in the backseat with nobody in the passenger's seat is too weird.) I've also slept in the backseat numerous times when I was too drunk to drive home.

Back in the day, I had a couple of pretty wild rides in the backseat of the car I owned, but it was parked at the time. Ah, adolescence, fond memories.

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before? No, but I have in my SO's car when my mom was with. She rode in the front. My car is a convertible and has a miniscule back seat - no one rides back there except my dog.
How long have you owned it? 2.5 years
If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving? N/A
If you have not have you at least SAT in back? Of course. I clean my car regularly and need to sit in the back to vacuum and wipe down the surfaces.
Is this the most bizarre thread you've seen started on the SDMB today? Hmmm. I'll get back to you.
No one but me or my SO drives our cars because they're both sticks and no one else seems to know how to drive manual transmission cars without stalling, grinding the gears or popping the clutch.

Sort of. I've never ridden in the seat but in the back area of my SUV with the seats down.
I went somewhere with my parents last year and got soaking wet in a pool. I didn't want to get the drivers seat or back seat wet so I got in the cargo area and my dad drove us home.
This was last summer and I got my car in 2003.
I have sat in the back seat while cleaning but that's it.

I've crawled around in the back seat or back cargo area of every vehicle I've ever owned for loading, unloading, or cleaning.
I don't think I've ridden in the back of my current car, owned since 2006. I'm pretty sure I rode in the back of my previous vehicle (SUV) which I had from 1992 to 2006. I was holding some cargo so it wouldn't thrash around while my wife drove.
My wife gets to ride in the back of her car pretty often. We take her Mom various places and Mom goes in the right front of wife's car since that's the easiest seat we own for an old person to get in and out of. And I drive. So wife ends up in her own back seat.

Nope. I rarely let anyone else drive it.

If you have not have you at least SAT in back?
I have not sat down in the back to sit down, I have been in the back to look for something or to clean it.

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before?
Yes.
How long have you owned it?
I had owned it for just shy of nine years.
If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving?
It was the very last trip in my car. The new owner and his buddy picked it up at my house, and I accompanied them in the back seat to go to the new owner's house.
If you have not have you at least SAT in back?
Not really. I'd been back there for vacuuming and cleaning.

Have I ridden in the backseat of my car: yes.
How long have I owned it: since March 2009
Who was driving: My dad. The car was originally his, and I inherited it when he passed away. I think we were taking my grandma somewhere and I didn't want to make her climb into the backseat.
Strangest thread today: probably :)

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before? No. I took the backseat out of my Wrangler to have more room for traps when I was trapping feral cats.

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before?-- No, which is a little odd since it was my dad's car when I was a young teenager.
How long have you owned it?-- About two years.
If you have not have you at least SAT in back?-- I've crawled around in the back; I'm sure I assumed a sitting position there at some point.

I was comforting our sick dog on a drive to the vet. My husband was driving. We were using my car because it was easier to get the dog into than my husband's car.

Nope. It's an interesting question.
I've owned one car or another since 1986, with the exception of 3 separate years. 6 cars in total. I've never ridden nor sat (except while cleaning) in the back seats of any of them.

If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving? - My DH fell down our basement stairs, he's 91 by the way. I called my son and nurse-in-training granddaughter to help me get him to the hospital. My son drove my car with my DH in the front seat. I rode in back to help steady him. I doubt if I could have driven my car as I was considerably upset by the situation.

Have you ridden in the backseat of your own car before?
Not this car. I drive the car 99% of the time -- my fiancee is the only other person who has ever driven it, and I think that's only happened twice while I've been a passenger. There was no reason for me to be in the backseat on either occasion since no one but the two of us was in the car.
How long have you owned it?
Since December of 2009.
If you have ridden in back why did you and who was driving?
N/A.
If you have not have you at least SAT in back?
I have. I *might* have sat in the back seat briefly when I was in the process of buying the car. Other than that, I've sat in the back on a few occasions while cleaning out the crap I tend to let accumulate in the back seat.
Is this the most bizarre thread you've seen started on the SDMB today?

I've napped in the backseat a couple times when I took my mom to the eye doctor. It's pretty comfy. Never rode back there, though, I have only let one person drive my car and I always sat in the front passenger seat.

I sat in the backseat of my last car (which I owned for 11 years) but mainly to clean it. Never rode in the backseat to my recollection.

Sure, all the time. On long trips, my wife and I switch off who sits in the back and entertains/feeds the kiddies.
I happen to have one and a half car: the car my brother drives is half-mine. I've ridden in the back of that one, also in the back of mine (they're the same model, I was tired, Mom always rides shotgun) with him at the wheel. The half-owned was bought new in 2000; mine is a 2003 purchase but a 1999 model.
And I had to drive Dad's car with him in the backseat, to and from chemotherapy. The first time, the light switch broke and all I could get on was the high beams... I knew how sick he was when he only grunted at me to switch them once and accepted "it's not working, Dad, it's stuck on high" without further protest.

Spouse was driving. We had my parents up to visit and my mom couldn't manage the back seat, so spouse and Mom sat up front and Dad and I sat in the back. (Sometimes it was spouse and Dad in the back, me and Mom in the front, but this question is specifically about me sitting in the back.)
