What things to you love that are infamously bad, and everyone else mentions as the best and most obvious example of a bad thing?

I'll start of with a big one, to make everyone else less shy. Trust me, you won't look bad following me - here it is:

I think Jar-Jar Binks is hilarious and he made the The Phantom Menace for me - easily the best single thing from that movie. Then again, I was a kid, and I hadn't seen the old ones, so I wasn't comparing the movie to anything else. I still don't get what the problem is.

Another example? Okay, here it is:

I love Gabriel Knight 3. I played that game for hours and days and years. I wore out a copy and had to buy a new one. It was the last game I was able to play that obsessively - the last game of my childhood, if you will. And my favorite part, the bit I described starry-eyed when describing the game to other people, is a problem fairly early on: persuading Gabriel Knight to leave town by figuring out how to rent the Harley.

I though the puzzle was hilariously brilliant, completely off the wall quirky, and it really made the game for me. It is fairly involved but it goes like this:

1. The main character refuses to advance the plot unless you rent a particular motorcycle for him.
2. The motorcycle is reserved for someone else.
3. You "borrow" this someone elses ID. However, Gabriel Knight looks nothing like the picture in this ID.
4. Solution? You give both Gabriel Knight, and the picture in the ID a fake mustache. Since a fake mustache is the perfect disguise, this fools the rental place.

I fell off my chair laughing when I solved this puzzle.

Later, I find out that this single puzzle is what everyone points to when saying how much Gabriel Knight 3 obviously sucks, and it's even been blamed for killing the adventure game genre as a whole.

So, anyone else? What do you love that everyone else points to as an obvious example of suckitude?

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial_%28video_game%29) - Wiki link

Yes, it's one of the worst video games ever released - a complete disappointment as a movie tie-in, boring, bizarre graphics ("if I fall in the goddamn wells ONE MORE TIME...!!"), aggravating gameplay ("if those FBI agents catch me ONE MORE TIME...!!") and almost entirely to blame for the Great Video Game Crash of 1983.

But I loved it. I was only 8 years old at the time of its release and as such, I loved video games too much to realize I should have hated it. The day I beat the game is one of my fondest childhood memories.

I really enjoyed Waterworld and also the Core and torment my peers by insisting we watch it when they're on TV.

I'm looking foward to Liam Neeson saying, "You sunk my battleship!" in the notorious film coming out.

I really shouldn't be here, because my contribution, such as it is, fails to meet the requirement of being "notoriously bad."*

I love Casino Royale. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Royale_%281967_film%29)

It is, without question, the best Bond film that was ever made, and the only one worth watching more than once.

*Where "notoriously bad" is defined as "actually, really and truly bad, and notorious for being so." If it's simply defined as "notorious for being thought of as bad by a large number of people," I'm okay with that. The people who think it is bad are simply wrong about it.

Haggis is universally hated? Presumably the haters haven't tasted it?Presumably. It's one thing to be presented with a delicious treat that bears some resemblance to sausage, and love it,without having learned what it's called.

It's quite another to know that it is sheep's heart, liver, and lungs, minced with oatmeal, suet, and onions, and boiled in sheep's stomach, and then be told, "And now, in honor of your visit, I've prepared a huge haggis for ye!"

Another vote for Jar-Jar Binks.

In a tale of political intrigue, slavery, conspiracy, railroaded-destiny, brutal and bloody conflict and inter-species racism, sometimes it's necessary for a gangly amphibian to stick his tongue into the wackiest of places.

He brought much needed comic relief to the film and though annoying, that was deliberate and a needed cause for his plot-necessary banishment and redemption.

Though, don't get me wrong, TPM had it's flaws, Mitochlorians destroyed a lot of the series' accumulated mystery, and the scenes of the robot occupation would have been a lot more powerful if they inserted more brutality.

They are- mashed turnips, or maybe rutabagas.

Honestly, I'd have taken a double helping of haggis to avoid those horrid neeps. They were hands down the worst thing about the haggis & side dishes I had in Scotland.

I actually like Budweiser and Coors. Don't get me wrong- I have a fairly well informed beer palate- my all-time favorite style is Czech Pilsner, with English bitter following closely (particularly fond of Ruddles County, Timothy Taylor Landlord & Shepherd Neame Spitfire).

You are aware that BK offers a vegetarian burger, right? Next time, you can get a BK Veggie! It's the only fast food place that actually offers a real vegetarian option, aside from salad + fries. My only criticism is they nuke it. It would be so much tastier if they char broiled it like they do the meat burgers, except the meat juices would contaminate the veggie burgers, thus defeating the purpose. I order it with all the Whopper fixings -- it kind of sucks unless you add a bunch of toppings to it.

People hate "American Pie"? I love that song. Never knew it was hated. Same with Waterworld and a lot of other mentions. (Limas, Indiana Jones, Taco Bell, etc.)

I do understand hate for Haggis, though. I had it once and it tasted like my bathroom smells after a trip to Taco Bell for bean burritos.

I love Arby's. I hear a lot of hate for them. When I was a kid we'd get it once a year because it was so expensive, but we all loved it. I would have rather gone to Arby's than go to a sit down restaurant.

No connection except that both have received quite a bit of disdain. In my experience, Ho Hos (and their ilk) are one of a very few foods that people seem to feel an insurmountable urge to scoff at when they see an adult buying or consuming them. Satanic Majesties was pretty much universally panned when it came out and has gained a reputation as a monumental failure, a classic example of the worst excesses of psychedelia, and a cautionary tale of what can happen when a good band tries to follow trends and make music that is outside their skill set. As I said, though, I love it.

By the way, just to show my breadth of taste, I also love boiled beets, mashed turnips, and Brussels sprouts, and I really like Kentucky Fried Chicken. And I used to work there.

I haven't tried haggis, but that is as I haven't been offered the option, ever.

The only ones I would have to say I DON'T like from this list are Jar-Jar (he should die, and george with him, although now that I have kids, I am more accepting), ketchup on steak and Beiber- and I don't even hate Beiber, just don't like him.

The other stuff... I don't know- none of it is bad. I wanna see the cites that say this stuff isn't appreciated!

Although I will admit that some 'bakers' make it difficult sometimes, by trying to pass off cheaped-out imitations of real fruitcake.

Mad Dog Time/Trigger Happy, which I believe was universally panned. But I own it, and it makes me laugh. I love Richard Dreyfuss in this.

Here's a link to Roger Ebert's 0 stars review (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19961129/REVIEWS/611290303/1023) (contains...spoilers?).

Ebert gave Battle: Los Angles 1/2 a star and I actually liked it. Going in with low expectations actually helps sometimes. I thought it was a lot better than Skyline.

I eat spam and I even came up with a recipe:

Chop spam. Put in pan and fry.
When spam turns brown, throw in raisins and chopped bits of a pear.
Add vanilla extract and cinnamon. Wait one minute. Done! There's your breakfast.

But for some reason I never could get anyone else to try the recipe.

This would be utterly foul to me NOT because of the Spam, but because of the raisins. Raisins are the devil in dried fruit form.

And mine is mac and cheese from a box. I won't say "everyone hates it," because that's certainly not true, but it ain't gourmet, that's for sure.

And add me to the list of people who prefer canned tuna over a tuna steak. Not that I don't like the latter, but the former is just so much more comforting.

I couldn't make it all the way through Skyline, but B:LA was okay. That is not to say that Source Code or the The Adjustment Bureau weren't much better. The nice thing about Netflix and Redbox, is that you don't feel financially committed to watching a whole movie once you decide it sucks.

One movie I decided to try off Netflix was The Big Bang with Antonio Banderas.
It turned out to be Film Noire mixed with quantum physics. I actually ended up liking that.

Another vote for haggis. I just don't get the hate. We serve it at our Rabbie Burns suppers every year, and hear a lot of "oh, gross!" comments. We utilize peer pressure to get everyone to taste it, and almost everyone says, "hey, that's not bad!" We almost never have leftover haggis.

Also, pipe smoke. Yeah, yeah, I get it. Smoking is bad. But I just love the smell of a good pipe tobacco.

Anchovies. I like 'em on my pizza, and I require them on my Caesar salads.

And (looking furtively around) McDonald's Quarter Pounders. When I want a quick, satisfying meal, that's where I go.

The only premade pizza my husband and I will eat is Jack's pepperoni thin crust. I blame this on having grown up eating Totino's frozen pizzas, which were like big round pieces of stale Wonder bread that had been sat upon, covered with Hunt's tomato paste and sprinklings of some kind of "herb," and liberally coated with a cheese-esque polymer. After that, Jack's pizza is a gourmet delight.

McDonald's hamburgers! Five at a time, with a large side of fries and a giant Coke. No cheese or pickles, please! Just five disreputable pucks of meat covered with onions, ketchup, and enclosed by damp, anemic buns.

I then spend the next 2-3 hours feeling oddly smug and vaguely ill.

Ok I admit it. I love Spam! I love it so much, once I ordered a "variety pack" case off Spam.com (http://www.spam.com/). My mailman had murder in his eyes when he delivered it because a case of Spam weighs a ton. I can give you the inside dope on all the Spam flavors except Spam Lite and Spam Less Sodium (who the heck looks for a "healthy" variety of Spam anyway?!!). Turkey Spam is a lot like old-fashioned turkey loaf and I can eat an entire can in one sitting, no prep, no nuthin' just a fork! Bacon Spam is a complete waste of time (two ham flavors, you can't taste any bacon at all) and Spam with Cheese is only good cold because if you try to cook it, the cheese all melts out. My favorite flavor for breakfast is Hickory Smoked Spam which compliments fried eggs perfectly. Spam Hot & Spicy really is spicy as it's got Tabasco sauce in it.

And yes, in a pinch, I'll get a can of Valu-Time luncheon loaf for $1.39 when I can't get Spam.

I also enjoy Deviled Ham and Deviled Chicken too, but those dinky cans are a bit pricey.

Thus completes my confession. I should be so ashamed...

Glen Campbell.

ABBA.

I'll second Taco Bell. No, it's not 'real' Mexican, but I'm not sure what is anymore. I read a great article about ten years back where a guy tracked down the origins of the burrito. Turned out that before it was Americanized, it was a rather undistinguished (and small, which isn't surprising given the -ito suffix) roll-up.

At any rate, whatever it is that Taco Bell serves, it's cheap, it's good, and being a purist about Mexican food is pretty silly anyway.

Putting catsup on hot dogs. Being a purist about hot dogs is, by an order of magnitude, even sillier than being a purist about Mexican food.

"Everybody Loves Raymond"

Ringo Starr

"American Pie" (the song)

mmmDidn't know there was a lot of disdain for "American Pie." I heard it on the radio a week or so ago, and was immediately reminded of just how catchy it is. Once you hit the refrain in the second verse (which is the first up-tempo verse), you're hooked.

And frankly, it's a great verbal montage of the sixties.

I'm aware that Ringo gets a lot of shit, but OTOH, a number of musically skilled people I know online have nothing but praise for his drumming.

The 1999 Lost In Space movie. I'm still bummed that there's not a sequel. I also don't dislike any of Star Trek, which includes both Voyager and Enterprise.

Applebees and similar chains. I don't get the hate. Heck, usually chains are better than non-chains. The latter all taste about the same, while different chains taste noticeably different.

I also think that medium steak just hasn't finished cooking. And I never heard that canned meats or pasta was somehow bad. Sure, it's not the real thing. But why does it have to be?

Oh, and count me as someone who loves BK fries. But I think that's a peculiarity of the Dope not to like them, or they'd have changed them back by now. They are the best fast food fries in existence.

Not by "everyone," but I don't think it would be a stretch to describe Atlas Shrugged as "notoriously bad." Certainly it fetches a lot of scorn.

I like Waterworld and The Day After Tomorrow, both of which have been mentioned, but I'll throw a helping of Tank Girl in for good measure. "Everyone" may not hate it, but I really enjoyed the film Starship Troopers (and I say this as a huge Heinlein fan, although I do not like the film as a Heinlein fan obviously). Also I thought The Phantom Menace was the best of the prequels, and the closest Lucas came to recapturing what made the original Star Wars so fun.

It may be that I was not meant for this "movie" thing.

I too enjoyed the first Starship Troopers film, as well as the third one (the second one was pretty lacking, aside from a couple of memorable scenes).

Also, love love love Everybody Loves Raymond, one of my family's favorite shows to watch together. The characters remind us of (very exaggerated) versions of various members of our own family.

I've got no problem with Taco Bell. Very rarely have any particular drive to go for it, but I've never minded eating there. Not real Mexican food? Neither is probably any Mexican food most folks have had.

Had a co-worker deride another taco restaurant as "Not authentic Tex-Mex!" My reply was to look at him and go "So? If I want authentic Tex-Mex, I can just go home and ask my mom to cook something."

Also, love eating at McD's and Burger King from time to time. If I wanted "real, quality burgers", again, I'd go home and have my dad grill some, as I've yet to go to a restaurant whose burgers compared to his.

Well, it's a very well made movie, just not a very deep or intelligent one. The sequels both lack a certain degree of quality that the first one has. Also, the third movie was way too campy and obviously low-budget, but still fun in parts.

Next time you watch it, ask yourself the question, who is the aggressor?
Basic science and numerous heavy hints about the nature of the regime suggests that Buenos Aires was destroyed in a false-flag attack.

A militarised society needs an enemy to justify itself.

I think Verhooeven was the perfect director for this film, what with his childhood in Nazi Holland, but he was not the best person to adapt Heinlein's book.

Well, maybe it wasn't fair to say the movie wasn't deep, it just shouldn't have been a Starship Troopers adaptation to begin with. He could have changed Rico's name to James Kirk and called it Star Trek without changing any of the other details and it would have been as accurate an adaptation of the source material.

And no, Buenos Aires was definitely not destroyed by a False Flag attack. It was just a convenient excuse to start the war. Never assume malice when incompetence is an adequate explanation. Always assume incompetence when dealing with the military and the government. :D

Fanfiction. I straight up love fanfiction. And not the good stuff. I'm not talking about the 100,000 word long Star Trek fanfic written by someone who has semi-realistic aspirations of becoming a published novelist. I'm talking about the true trash. Characters de-aging into children, characters waking up as kittens, overly sensitive grown men who cry at the drop of a hat, all of it. And the porn! I adore the porn, because even when it never comes close to turning me on, it never fails to make me smile.

Don't get me wrong, I read actual novels too - all the time, in fact - but sometimes, after a long hard day of work, I have to ask myself what I really want: a brilliant, slow paced classic, or the Tenth Doctor screwing Donna Noble against the Tardis console? The later will always win.

It wasn't originally going to be a Starship Troopers "adaption", but some exec noticed the superficial similarities, bourght the rights and bolted the name on it.

Verhooeven hasn't even read the book.

No reason to assume it had to travel by any artificial means. It could have just happened to be tumbling through the area when the Earth happened to be in its path. Like I said, it seems much more likely that they took a chance natural disaster and found a way to use it as an excuse to start a war with another group they already were having very high tensions with.

EDIT: Plus, look at it this way: What sounds better: That some random rock found its way past our defenses and cold cocked us? Or that it was part of a nefarious alien plot to attack us? Blaming it on the Bugs was obviously a simple coverup for their own incompetence (and little else that the military does for the duration of the movie does much to dispel the impression that they are incompetent).

I've been watching Jem on the Hub, and it's dated, Pizzazz is such a hater, and the women's eyeshadow is godawful ... but it's fun to watch The Holograms win over the Misfits.

I don't think Jem and the Holograms counts as notoriously bad, considering there have been conventions for it.

I enjoyed the Coneheads movie.

As did I!

As well as the live-action Popeye, starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. And that was despite my never having been a huge fan of the cartoon, even in childhood.

Didn't she make Revolution 9, probably one of the most trippy pieces of art ever. She at least deserves kudos for that

I like Oprah.

There, I said it.

I like her message, (that anyone can come from nothing and make something of themselves, that we could all live better lives, etc.) I like that she got people reading again, I like that she puts her picture on her mag, because it sells more mags and her message reaches more people, (though she doesn't really like doing it every month!), I think her actions today may well change the face of Africa tomorrow. I've never seen her be wicked, cruel or mean. And I don't really care about those who hate on her. I like her.

McDonald's, bologna, canned ravioli, canned meatballs, hot dogs... basically anything made with ground up non-choice bits of the animal.

Me, too. But I drew the line when we cooked up a plastic frozen tube of cheapie "chorizo" I got for $1 at Walmart. There was this...red...goop in the pan we all looked at it for a while... ? Anyone wanna go first?...then we read the ingredients: salivary glands, lymph nodes, pork fat and pork cheeks... Anyone? Hey, where y'all going? Bunch of sissies!

Many people (myself included) who were unimpressed by TSMR when it was released have been surprised to realize as years passed that it has aged very well. Today it's one of my favorite Stones albums.

I love water. No flavor, no bubbles, no minerals, and usually, NOT the crap out of a faucet. But just plain water. I know people who say, "I hate drinking water." To me, this is just as inconceivable as saying, "I hate air," or "I hate breathing."

Me too. Whenever I'm in a restaurant in Europe, and tell the waiter all I want to drink is some water, perhaps with ice, I have to explain in detail exactly what I mean. It's like nobody ever heard of drinking water.

Mentioned it here already in a similar thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=609202) - Starship's We Built This City. Yeah, I know, it's a shame Jefferson Airplane ended up like that, but if you ignore that I think it's a fun tongue-in-cheek rant about the commercialization of popular music with a catchy-as-hell chorus. And I love the synths.

Don't get me wrong, I read actual novels too - all the time, in fact - but sometimes, after a long hard day of work, I have to ask myself what I really want: a brilliant, slow paced classic, or the Tenth Doctor screwing Donna Noble against the Tardis console? The later will always win.

That reminds me, I love William W. Johnstone western novels. Smoke Jensen, Preacher, that stuff is just crap and I can’t not buy the books at the grocery store.

Totino's Pizze. If I had to choose between any frozen pizza and these, I'd go for these. In a pinch, these are it. The "better" frozen pizzas are inferior IMO to these bottom-shelf winners. [/chris kimball]

Cheap-ass ramen noodles. I could live on these, just straight-up, with the regular little packets of salt. It's not just college dorm-food anymore, people! Not kidding -- I love those things. Close to a perfect food.

Girl-on-girl porn -- and masturbating (like a motherfuck). Just kidding -- I hate both those things, and so does everyone else I ever heard of.

+1 to Taco Bell and Arby's and KFC -- if had to have a big ole meal at a FF joint, I'd pick these. Maybe not KFC, but I've eaten there in the past and thought it was OK enough chicken. I'd eat there again if hungry enough for chicken again, though. Arby's has IIRC those curly fries -- some of those and one of those sandwiches
and it's like blowing a corkscrew-dicked pig and eating a cunt sandwich at the same time. Very PC, should be more popular.
Taco Bell rules as well -- if there were one across the street from me, I'd be eating that bitch out from behind every day. Not kidding, actually, although I may have convinced myself to not seek one out anytime soon.

Subway too, but I guess they are pretty popular -- as long as some Scot behind the counter doesn't jew you out of enough onions and spinach and green peppers, who couldn't tolerate a big ass sandwich with cured meats? And if you don't like it, it's the right shape to shove up your ass, you snob!

Opera -- the kind with the women wearing the horn-helmets on their heads and the fat chicks and all that. Love that shit. Wagner's pretty fucking popular, but that's the popular perception (thanks to Chuck "Culture-Enemy-#1" Jones and those Horwitz boys) -- that it's the home of wankers like Frasier Crane in the audience and fat chicks with their tits hanging out and horns on their head shrieking like banshees. Be in my bunk. Not kidding. But I'll be thinking of the Pilgrim's Chorus, probably.

Franzia boxed wine. Love this shit. Cheap enough, and good enough. I'll drink no wine before it's time...to get crunk. Not kidding -- I'd buy this before most any other option anytime, anywhere. It's fine, who cares what it tastes like? And, yes, I am your grandmother.

And last, fucking your wife through a hole in the sheet, which sheet covers her head and entire body except the wet bit down there (let's hope there's only one, or else there might be a problem). Hypothetically, my marriage could have lasted if we'd tried "my" idea (auch dich Rebbe, sholem aleichem). And if she never left the sheet while in my presence. Wait, that is a kind of popular idea world-wide, I guess. Screw it, I still want it.

Oh God yes, Fruitcake! My favorite part of Christmas, because nobody else eats it! Well, okay, my daughter got the fruitcake gene, so she and I fight over it.
See, I was raised in a very Catholic family, and every year we got a fruitcake from the Trappist monks of Gethsemani Farms. Damn, that fruitcake was scrumptious. Moist, tender, bursting with a dozen flavors all distinct but all happening at once, and real Kentucky bourbon to boot. What's not to love?

In fairness, according to physics, there's also no way for a fleet of spaceships to get from one end of the galaxy to the other in days, either. If the humans can cruise around the galaxy powered by their Magic Space Engine, there's no particular reason the bugs can't propel a rock the same distance using Magic Bug Poop.

McCoy was obviously Spock's mistress (his mister?) on the side at some point, which Kirk appears unaware of (or so confident in his Kirkiness that he just doesn't care, this latter seems more likely given his character). Hence all the badgering he gives Spock and Spock's constant dismissals.

There's a few here, but I like fanfic, too, though I am way more discerning than Small Hen :D (though I wouldn't mind the Tenth Doctor/Donna story!) And I read a long article on Yoko Ono once that made me look more deeply into her story, and it seems like she's been notoriously and unfairly accused of many, many things, many of which were not her fault. People were looking for someone to blame and they found an easy target. She will be forever hated and it's pretty damn unfair, actually.

I also love B and C class science fiction, even if it gets really really weird. I am talking things like Re-Animator and Altered States. Awful dreck but so entertaining!

Watching volleyball. I love playing it, but could never imagine watching it and understanding every rule, strategy and nuance of the game. I really didnt have much choice in the matter though, as I have 3 daughters that are passionate about the sport. I cant believe that I am so psyched about the highschool season starting, so I can watch my youngest play in her sophmore year. My middle daughter plays D2 and am thrilled that her team is in town tonight. My eldest was a 1st team all-american D1 player and is training with the National team in Anaheim. She just signed a contract to play pro in Japan. If she doesnt make the roster for the London games, she will most likely play in Rio in 2016.

Thanks for starting a thread I could use to brag about my girls.

Being from Wisconsin, I freely admit that I adore beer cheese. Take a typical Muenster type cheese. Dunk it in beer. Toss it up on a cool dark shelf for a couple of months. Slice and serve.

It doesn't go bad--it goes decadent. But, yes, it looks and smells like something you'd ordinarily handle with tongs on the way to the outside garbage can.

I used to put signs on it in our communal college refrigerator: THIS IS NOT ROTTEN. DON'T THROW OUT!!

There is a very popular Czech bar snack called beer cheese (in Czech the actual name is probably spelled with lots of J's, K's and Z's) but I don't think it's actually aged IN beer, but instead mixed with beer (mashed up in a paste using beer) and spread on rye bread right before eating.

Very strong, but for those who like stuff like that, it's rather tasty....
