How do you use smilies?

I tried putting a smilie in a post and all I got was http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/images/smilies/smile.gif.

You don't use the actual address/link to the smile..you just use simple keys.
:) = : ) (without the space)
:p = : p
;) = ; )

Or you should also be able to click on each one as you're composing your reply (if you're not using quick reply, that is). The smiles will be in the box to the right of the reply box.

Scroll down to the bottom of this page. You'll see a little box on the left side, which says "Posting Rules", which tells you what you can post and what you can't. It also has some links, and one of them is to the smilies (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/misc.php?do=showsmilies) list. There's also a link to the BB Code.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I do. When I'm posting from my phone I just do without, as I can never remember the exact syntax. From my iPad or laptop I just click on the one I want to the right.
