View Full Version : Walking dead discussion for those who have read the comic

We've been having some issues in the episodic threads with people revealing or hinting at stuff that will happen on the TV show based on their knowledge of the comics. I don't begrudge these people the desire to discuss similarities and differences between the two mediums, but it takes up a significant fraction of the episodic threads, and people are frequently accidentally dropping little hints which reduce the enjoyment of the (probably majority) of people who are only watching the TV show.
So could we keep two seperate discussions going? The episodic threads can be only about the TV show that week - as if the comics don't exist and you're evaluating only what has been shown on the show - and this thread, which will be open to any discussion about the comics - particular as it relates to the TV show, but not limited to what the TV show has shown - anything found in the comics is fair game if you want to discuss how they might handle this or that upcoming situation.
Rather than getting into a fight about spoilers in the episodic threads, can we try this method? After a rough start by people defiantly screaming YOU CAN'T KEEP ME FROM SPOILING WHAT I WANT!!!!! in the game of thrones threads, this method worked pretty well.
So... please.

I forgot to put [OPEN SPOILERS] in the title, but based on the context, it should be obvious.

Does the [OPEN] thing mean we don't have to use the spoiler tabs?
What about people that are reading the comics and don't want that spoilered?
Just wanted to be clear on what is acceptable before someone gets all bent out of shape again for going against unwritten rules.
Maybe they should change the title of the show thread to say [NO SPOILERS] after hearing about the e-mails.
Spoilers concerning the show would seem to be more crucial in that thread anyway, since all bets are off so far between the two mediums.

Right, no spoiler tags necesary. Assume everyone is current on the comic book series - it's logistically difficult and kind of defeats the point if you don't. The whole thread would just be spoiler boxes.

Well, you never know.
The other thread said spoilers were okay, but wasn't clear that people wouldn't want the comic discussed.
Always better and easier to know ahead of time.
Guessing if that wasn't made clear, someone would get all pissy if we discussed what happens in volume 15 openly (which is enough to keep me out of the thread, because I haven't read the most recent issues yet).
When I get that newest volume, I may drop back in.

This is the problem, no one comments here and it slides off the main page.
Anyway, I'd like to discuss the differences so far between the AMC series and the comics and what you think may be coming down the road.
I think I read somewhere that the end of season 2 may take them towards the Prison. I expect to see Michonne in season 3 as well as some version of the Governor.
I can't imagine they would leave two such iconic characters out of the story.
I have seen theories that Merle may be the Governor in this world and now I am wondering if he is following them and maybe snatched Sophia.
Wouldn't be too hard for a single person to stay hidden, and he can survive off the land like Daryl.
How will they deal with Rick's hand missing if they ever get to that point, or will they leave that out? Again, an iconic part of the story.
What about the horrible things that happen at the prison and the Governor's town.
Rape of Michonne changes her, but can they go that far in the show, let alone what she does to him after the fact.
Really excited to see what stays and what goes in the alternate universe of the show.

I quit reading the comic book shortly after the Governor plot because I thought it was silly and over the top in gratuitous violence.

Yeah, somebody complained in the other thread about the lack of strong female characters, and I had to bite my fingers to keep from typing "Just wait..."

And personally, I wish they would leave out the loss of Rick's hand. I never liked that bit in the comics, and if Merle reappears, one one-handed character is enough.

Interesting opinion, can you clarify?
I mean, it was definitely violent, but that was the point. What did you find silly?

The Governor was a silly completely unbelievable character on his own. When combined with a population that was either unaware or completely ignored their completely batshit crazy leader it was just too much for me. I got up to the part where Rick choked someone to death after they made their escape to the prison and decided to part ways with the series.

Well, Andrea and Maggie both become strong characters, nothing like Michonne but still.
As far as the missing hand on Rick, I wouldn't be surprised if they leave it out.
Some things just don't work well in a live version.
I personally found it added to the story, it changed Rick in so many ways and showed that The Governor was a sadistic mad man.
Afterwards, he really struggles with what he has lost. He is no longer able to defend himself as well.
I think that was a real eye opener for the character.
Oh for heaven's sake, did someone mention the slope of a floor?

Have to agree to disagree there, but it is an interesting opinion. I've not heard many people that feel that way.
Thanks for adding more of your thoughts.

I agree with Odesio. The Governor is a little too comic-bookish for the series, IMHO. (For that matter, Michonne is pretty comic-bookish, too.)

Same here but I stopped because the book got soooo sloooow. It probably read better in TPB format.
I was already starting to get annoyed at the mayhem and blood for 'just cuz' reasons and then the book doing a 180 and moving at a snail's pace was just a deal breaker.
Michonne is pretty comic booky indeed but I think if cast right she can be pulled off. Gina Torres maybe?

Much better in the 6 issue volumes.
I won't buy issues, just too long between them for my taste.

I must be missing something. What does this mean?
It's a reference to the Game of Thrones thread. In the non-spoilered TV show thread, one of the book readers mentioned that he thought the floor of the area in which of one of the main characters was staying would be more slanty and sloped. (I hope I didn't give too much away here.)
It was totally a throw-away mention that really revealed very, very little of anything to do with the plot. It was just a "hey, I thought..." thing. Yet some of the non-book readers who didn't want anything to do with the books finding its way in the TV thread went ape.
Not one of the SDMB's finer moments, really.

The person making the complaint was unreasonably oversensitive, but no one went ape. It's always the "fuck you, I'll spoil what I want" crowd that gets nasty to begin with. And so it was for that case - someone made an (admittedly oversensitive) request, and the pro spoiler assholes went nuts.

I own the first few hardcovers, but this comic ridiculously sucks now.
Michonne has always been a hollow joke of a character. The story line got massively decompressed, and the reveals (like Rick's phone) are like a child's version of a twist in a Twilight Zone episode. It's all very soapy and hacky. I see the show skewing as far away from these plot points as possible.

I sort of hope so, actually. There's a lot about the comics that's pretty juvenile.
