As I'm sure many of you remember from this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=603604) my husband and I have been expecting a baby. Well, we are expecting no longer because she has finally arrived! Thursday morning I checked into the hospital and gave birth to the most beautiful baby girl in the whole world. (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150413610688497&set=a.10150413610453497.381869.638028496&type=3&theater) I'm still in pain from the c-section but it is very manageable now and in a few hours we are checking out and heading home! I'll come back and post more detail a little later when it isn't 4 in the morning but I figured that since I'm up with the baby anyway I might as well check in and let everyone here know that she has arrived and that all three of us are doing just fine.

Your link doesn't work, though I'm sure you're right about her being "the most beautiful baby girl in the whole world" (IYO — everyone knows the Ottlets were co-owners of the title).

But that's nitpicking. Sláinte and welcome, little one! Wishing you many, many years of driving your parents to distraction.

Hey, congrats! We'll be needing you to correct the picture situation post-haste! And btw, when I had a c-section in 1990, you spent 10 days in the hospital for it! Get off my lawn!

I'm back and officially out of the hospital. The baby is currently enjoying her bouncy chair and being adorable (http://s439.photobucket.com/albums/qq111/lesschatmorehat/?action=view&current=021.jpg). Her name is Bridget (http://s439.photobucket.com/albums/qq111/lesschatmorehat/?action=view&current=010.jpg) and she is just about the best (http://s439.photobucket.com/albums/qq111/lesschatmorehat/?action=view&current=001.jpg) baby (http://s439.photobucket.com/albums/qq111/lesschatmorehat/?action=view&current=014.jpg) ever (http://s439.photobucket.com/albums/qq111/lesschatmorehat/?action=view&current=011.jpg). She sleeps for several hours at a time with no interruptions and she nurses like a champ which I think is the universe's way of apologizing for the 4 spinals it took to numb me for my cesarean.

Life as you used to know it is gone, of course. Welcome to the wonderful world of being a parent, where joy and exhaustion duke it out for years without either one ever getting a clear lead. But damn, is it ever worth it!

The needles were the worst part. The nurse screwed up my IV and I bled everywhere all over the room, it took 4 tries to numb me with the spinal, and then they had to give me another injection and take blood over the rest of my stay. I did get through it all but not without panicking. Loud, screaming, crying panicking.

Yes, she has her father wrapped around her little finger (http://s439.photobucket.com/albums/qq111/lesschatmorehat/?action=view&current=benandbaby.jpg). :)

Yes, she has her father wrapped around her little finger (http://s439.photobucket.com/albums/qq111/lesschatmorehat/?action=view&current=benandbaby.jpg). :)

Get used to that. She'll be all about Mommy for a while, and then one day, she will suddenly become Daddy's Girl. And you'll think to yourself "I carried you all those months, and look at this big scar from having myself sliced open to deliver you safely,, and I fed you and bathed you and changed a zillion diapers, and this is how you treat me?!" But it's all normal, and the pendulum will swing back eventually, so enjoy those days for what they are. Nothing is much cuter than a tiny little girl leading a besotted grown man by the nose.

My favorite moment when Lily was born wasn't the first time I held this perfect little creature, ('though that was amazing.) It was the look of teary-eyed wonder on her father's face when he first held her, as though she was the first child ever, and as though I had conjured the most miraculous being on the planet. I'm enjoying the Mommy phase, but I will actually enjoy the "I love my daddy best" phase also.

If I may make an observation from the other side of the equation (and I'm going to whether I may or not), my Dad Moment™ with the Elder Ottlet came a bit later, after the Apgars and the mecomium poop, when they were putting her mother to bed. A nurse directed me to sit in a recliner and handed EO (who was kinda fussy with all this commotion) to me. As soon as I leaned back a bit she curled up in a ball on my chest, let out a sigh bigger than she was, and fell asleep. That was 25+ years ago, and the little finger still has a hold on me.

Looks like Bridget's father is right on schedule.

Congrats!! She's gorgeous, and I love the name Bridget!

I had a C-section 18 months ago, and I know how your belly must be feeling right about now. Be sure to take it easy and keep up with the pain meds. I made the mistake of thinking I could hold off on filling the Rx for my oxycodone after I got home from the hospital, and 3 hours later I was begging my husband to go fill the script. Stay on the meds as long as they are prescribed, you'll be thankful for them.

Also did you use a pregnancy pillow like the Snoogle? I found that wrapping my pillow around my belly while I sat in bed, like the "swirl around" pictured here (http://www.leachco.com/snoogle/snooglepositions.html) was amazingly helpful in supporting my abs. It helped to keep using pillows under my belly in bed when I rested on my side as well.

Take good care of yourself and rest up as much as you can, let your wound heal and don't try to do too much too soon.

I'm not going to lie. It was a horrifying experience and it really cemented my decision to have my tubes tied because I'm not doing it again. That being said, it was all worth it. I have the greatest baby in the whole world sleeping next to me and I don't regret a moment of it.
