View Full Version : Rob Ryan

Could someone please explain to me why, during every Cowboys game, I have to see that fat bastard Rob Ryan, with his homeless man hairdo, his Bill Belichick fashion statement shirts, and his bloated gut after every play?
And if for some reason I don't see him, I get that walking fossil Jerry Jones.
I can't think of any other team that has a coordinator and/or owner under constant watch from the network covering them.
What is the reason? Is there one (other than to drive me crazy?)
SFP
PS, I know I'm not supposed to sweat the small stuff, but how am I supposed to do that when the small stuff is so annoying?
Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, please move. I put it here for the obvious sports connection.

Oh it's on. Rob Ryan's (http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aolnews.com/media/2008/01/rob-ryan-010108.jpg) hair (http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aolnews.com/media/2007/12/rob-ryan-122807.jpg) is the best in NFL history. At least at its full strength. He cut it last year and it hasn't grown back yet.
This is why he wasn't retained by the Browns by the way. You don't give up that hair.

I can't remember a DC ever receiving as much screen-time as this guy has. There was one game where if you didn't know who the head coach was you would have guessed it was Ryan.
I don't get it either.

Wasn't it Rob Ryan who challenged his defense to a fist fight a few years ago when he was on the Raiders and they were half assing it?
He should bring a battle axe to every game just in case.

Oh it's on.
Huh? What's on? You seem to have a major man crush on Rob Slob.
I imagine Thanksgiving Day spent with the Ryan family is sort of like watching a nature show about how hyenas eat.

Rob Ryan challenges you to a duel by battleaxe is what's on.

Oh. Well, I guess I accept.
But I still wonder. And tomorrow will be another heaping helping of the barbarian ryan.
Thanksgiving. First the family, and then the Cowboys. What a crappy holiday

He a loud-mouthed coach on one of the nation's most popular teams. That's all there is to it.
Quick: Think of a Rob Ryan quote. Think of a Jerry Jones quote. Think of a Jason Garrett quote. There you go.
I think another part of it is how little personality and character there is on the Dallas team.

It's a combination...
He's photogenic due to his flowing locks.
He's on the sideline, making a better shot than in the booth.
His Defenses are generally considered "good."
His brother is a New York head coach.
The average play length is 8.1 seconds, and 40 seconds between plays. This leads to over-use of B-Roll shots.
In essence, it's either Rob Ryan or another replay.

I can't disagree with you, but it is his brother Rex that annoys the piss out of me. I take childish pleasure every time the Jets lose, just because Rex predicts every year that they will win the Super Bowl.

I've no problem with Ryan's hair; what I do have a problem with are his giving voice to his opinions. An assistant coach is supposed to give his honest opinions to the head coach and not run his mouth in the media. Ryan's been with 3 teams in 3 years. His loyalty is to himself and not the team. When and if he becomes a head coach then he can talk to the media all he wants. Until then he should shut up.

I can't remember a DC ever receiving as much screen-time as this guy has. There was one game where if you didn't know who the head coach was you would have guessed it was Ryan.
Marvin Lewis got a lot of airtime when he was DC of the Ravens, but understandably as his unit was the one winning all of the games. If Brian Billick was not such a blowhard you'd have never known Lewis wasn't the HC.

Not every coach looks like Tom Landry, Mike Nolan, or Jack Del Rio. Get over it. :dubious: Thanks for the informative reply. Oh, and your answer is bullshit anyway. Landry is dead, Nolan isn't a head coach any longer and Del Rio isn't allowed to dress up anymore. The NFL does not permit coaches to dress in suits and ties anymore unless they are first approved by the league.

I love this guy and everything about his hair-do. It truly IS art. I'd love to know how much time it took to do those designs, and what they cost.

Don't you remember? Rob and Rex's super cool guy dad Buddy once socked Jeff Fisher in the face on the sidelines during a game...when they were assistant coaches for the same team!

Wade Phillips gets a fair amount of screen time as Houston's DC. It helps that he's a fairly recognizable former head coach. Also, the massive turnaround he orchestrated with the Texans' defense is rather remarkable. They don't point it out as much, but Bob McNair is also on camera a lot.
Big name assistants often get a fair amount of screen time. Off the top of my head, I saw a fair amount of Jim Zorn, Dom Capers, and Mike Martz over the last couple weeks. The same was true for Charlie Weis before he bolted for UF. John Elway got a fair amount of screen time in that last game against the Jets. Bob Kraft usually gets a couple shots. And both former Presidents Bush often get at least 1 (and usually more) shots during Cowboys and/or Texans games.
So, I'm not sure if it's really Rob Ryan you are noticing. Or something about him that stands out even more in your eyes. To be fair, Jason Garrett doesn't stand out at ALL (unlike, say, Jim Schwartz or Bill Belichick), so it may also be a bit of confirmation bias.

That wasn't Jeff Fisher he punched. That was Kevin Gilbride.
IMHO, a face worth punching.

A friendly reminder.
Gilbride is the OC on the Giants, who are playing MNF tonight.
He's made a few appearances on the screen, but the Giants are getting destroyed, so no one cares.
Also, Here's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Gilbride) the link to his Wiki page. If you look at his body of work, he has bounced around a lot. Two years seems to be as long as most teams can stand him being around. The Giants are the exception, as he's been there since 2004.

So, slightly off topic, but why do OC's work from a booth above the field but DCs work with the team on the field?
