Why Log Cabin Republican?

It may be me with my maturity level permanently stuck at about age 12 but I sure wouldn't call a gay political organization "log" anything. So, where does the name come from?

It refers to Abraham Lincoln and is a statement that they believe in the original values of the republican party.

I suppose it didn’t occur to anyone to ask Log Cabin itself. We wanted to be the “Lincoln Club” but it was taken, so we went to his “roots”
