I'm glad that both parties got their shit together this time and did this without much of a fuss. It is interesting that both the most progressive of Democrats and the most conservative of Republicans opposed the measure for not dissimilar reasons:
Sen. Tom Harkin: “This Congress will be making a GRAVE MISTAKE—a grave mistake—and reinforcing a dangerous precedent. And I’m dismayed that Democrats, including a Democratic president and a Democratic vice president, have proposed this, and are willing to sign off on a deal that could begin the unraveling of Social Security. With this bill, we can no longer say that social security doesn't contribute to the deficit. This, I believe has been the hallmark and the underpinning of the party that I’ve been proud to belong to. Cutting the payroll tax is a bad idea, terrible idea. I’m embarrassed that it's being proposed by a Democratic president and a Democratic vice president.”
Rush Limbaugh: Now, if they want to stop it, Wall Street Journal, Republicans,
if they want to stop this, explain what's really going on here.
Explain that this isn't a tax cut.
Since when did Social Security taxes, when were they actually called tax increases? These are contributions.
These are actual deductions from your pay that end coming back to you --
this is how it's always been sold
-- in your retirement years, in your golden years. Theoretically, it's your money.
All we're doing is defunding the only mechanism that funds Social Security.
If they want to stop this, then just explain
that this is draining money from Social Security without any of the necessary reforms.
