21 Jump Street. Surprisingly hilarious.

Took my wife to see this movie on a whim today. I don't generally like Jonah Hill or Channing Tatum but this movie fired on all cylinders for the full 2hrs.

The jokes were almost all funny. Tatum was actually likable in this movie and not totally wooden. He really plays "dumb guy" perfectly.

Not sure what else to say except don't be afraid to see this movie based on the commercials or premise. It's very funny.

Oh, and Johnny Depp does have a cameo in the movie but it's a really good one and not just a 2 sec walk-on type thing. Very funny.

I read a local reviewer who said it was pretty darn good. Self aware and funny. The reviewer pointed out that it had to be self aware or it was going to SUCK!

I'll be sure to tell my sister. She loved that show, and was thinking the movie would suck. The only reason she was considering seeing it was the Depp cameo.

And I still say the original show was itself intended to be, say, 40% comedic.

It's possible to make a good movie out of the unlikeliest source material. Charlie's Angels, Josie and the Pussycats, Jumanji, and Pirates of the Caribbean are all past examples. So I'll move this one to my "might consider watching" list.

Personally, I thought the movie did a really good job in expanding the brief story of the book into a full-length film.

I saw it with my friend last night. We're both too young to remember the original series (I know my mom loved it though), but that doesn't really matter. It was consistently funny and I'm glad we chose this over Will Ferrell's latest.

I really enjoyed it and only ended up seeing it because I had to kill time and this was the only film with the appropriate start time- so, I lucked out. I probably would have given it a pass otherwise.

I was so not interested in this movie that I read nothing about it and had no idea Depp had a cameo until he graced the screen. The element of surprise made it so incredibly satisfying to me- I was happy I didn't know about it going in.

Depp and <Spoiler>'s cameos were great, but I didn't notice <Spoiler>'s cameo. I saw on the film's Wiki page that she is in it but I missed her while actually watching it.

Just saw it this weekend. I liked it pretty well; my wife loved it. It is indeed very funny, but (and I don't usually pick at this) I was surprised at how graphically violent it got toward the end. There was one moment during the freeway chase that seemed jarringly incongruous (If you've seen it I think you know what I mean), and sort of re-set the tone for the rest of the way. I'll spoiler-box the rest of my comments... The above-mentioned shift in tone continued when they brought in Depp and DeLuise only to immediately kill them! I get that that was part of the meta-joke, but I had trouble getting past the fact that they died essentially as a direct result of Hill and Tatum's actions, and then we're treated to a bloodbath of a shootout, charred corpses, and severed private parts (which was admittedly very funny), all if which happened after they had been fired. And instead of criminal charges, they get their jobs back and the respect of their Captain and peers. I do realize I wasn't supposed to take any of this seriously, but I found all this a bit much to swallow even for a silly comedy like this. I'm being over-critical, I know, because it's supposed to be funny, and it is. Just check the logic center of your brain at the door and you'll enjoy it more.

Is the humor based on awkwardness and embarrassment?No, not really. There are a few moments where Jonah Hill's character is played for laughs through his awkwardness, especially around women, but it's really not uncomfortable. The humor is almost entirely based on cop show/movie tropes - similar to Hot Fuzz, but it manages to cover new territory.

I saw this last night; a friend invited some people out for his birthday to see a movie, and this is the one he chose. I never would have chosen to go see this one myself, to be honest... but I ended up loving it. Enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Nothing ground-breaking, but it didn't take itself too seriously, and had a number of really great laughs throughout.

I haven't read that thread, but I definitely had a bit of pre-judging in my mind as well. I mean, the idea seems silly and nothing in the trailers or commercials has looked good.

Kudos for them for keeping the good stuff in the movie instead of showing it all on TV.

My teenage son and I saw it tonight and really liked it, knowing nothing about the TV show other than that it was a big early role for Johnny Depp. Tell me, what were all of the in-jokes? And did the original series feature the same abandoned Korean church?

Just saw this tonight and I agree with what others have said. Very funny movie. Definitely worth seeing.
