When I redid my system a few years ago, I retained my old HD as a slave drive. Now it is going bad. I have copied what files I want elsewhere. I tried unplugging its power plug, but the computer wouldn't boot. Do I need to find where it is mounted on start up and remove it?
Please answer instead of posting the thread about surprising things people don't knon.

Sounds like your bootloader was on the old drive. This page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows) mentions Windows, but you can use the same procedure to install a bootloader on your new drive.

Yes, this seems like a very good solution.
And kudos, OP, you for a smile from me for mentioning the don't know thread.
