I am confused over the fake tanning comment, which to me implies those silly cremes that turn people orange. That is basically like dye for your skin, it looks cool when you shower and half of your body is tanned and half is not.

But then the story is about tanning beds and her daughter having a sun burn. I almost think it has to be fake tanning with how she looks.

It's probably both tanning and dyed/painted skin. We can't see her true hair color, but her eyes are light enought hat I doubt her ability to achieve that color naturally.

I fully believe that she let her child into the booth. I've known two compulsive tanners. One I wasn't close to but she was my best friend's roommate. The other, strangely was the same friend's boyfriend years after the roommate lady died of skin cancer. The boyfriend is an EMT and still healthy AFAIK, but leathery brown and looks 30 years older than he should.

They were both people who just hated the way they looked, and the further their features faded into the coloring the happier they were. Very sad.

ETA: What is up with her lips int eh first photo? Does she have some sort of blue lipliner tattooed on as well?

I've seen some creams that require you to still tan to get the effect. You just get dark a lot faster.

I saw a clip of her claiming her daughter was there but not in a tanning bed. The owners of the salon said the child wasn't even in the building. The mother said she thinks her daughter went to school and told someone she went tanning with her mother, and the whole child protection thing started from there. Seems like no crime to me.

The mother said she thinks her daughter went to school and told someone she went tanning with her mother, and the whole child protection thing started from there. Seems like no crime to me.Does it seem credible to you that the kid came by a "severe sunburn" in New Jersey in mid April some other way?The investigation of Krentcil began after cops were summoned to the elementary school attended by the kindergartener, who was in pain due to what appeared to be a severe sunburn. The subsequent probe determined, cops allege, that Krentcil took her child into a tanning booth at a Nutley parlor a week prior to her April 24 arrest.

I've never been in a tanning salon, so I don't know -- are those booths big enough to hold two people?

As for whether someone could get a sunburn in New Jersey in April, why not? We've had some slammin' whether in the northeast recently. I got a sunburn in March, but I was in Florida.

Recent research seems to indicate tanning may be addictive (http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/12/how-tanning-changes-the-brain/).What the researchers found was that several parts of the brain that play a role in addiction were activated when the subjects were exposed to UV rays. The findings, which appear in the coming issue of the journal Addiction Biology, may help explain why some people continue to tan often despite awareness about risks such as skin cancer, premature aging and wrinkles.

“What this shows is that the brain is in fact responding to UV light, and it responds in areas that are associated with reward,” said Dr. Bryon Adinoff, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and an author of the study. “These are areas, particularly the striatum, that we see activated when someone is administered a drug or a high-value food like sugar.”The super-tan may have the same kind of physiological addiction that some of the morbidly obese among us have.

That having been said, the latest news on this is, according to mom and dad, the kid had a normal sunburn as opposed to being with mom in the tanning bed.

Enjoy,
Steven

If kids getting bad sunburns was a crime when I was a kid, 90 percent of the parents here in the deep south would still be doing time.

Yeah, its possible she drug the kid into the tanning booth. But I think its also possible the ladies version of the story is true as well.

My wife got a sunburn last weekend in North Carolina, although "severe" doesn't apply. Allegedly one is supposed to apply sunblock for any exposure longer than 15 minutes, in the current state of the ozone layer.

But I haven't seen what the authorities saw -- in the video, the (fair-skinned) kid looks untouched by the sun. Is that supposed to be a "severe sunburn?"

Since there was an investigation before they decided to charge her, I think it likely must have been fairly evident that it wasn't just from outdoor exposure.

I was thinking more of the awesome couple of days we had a few weeks ago, but yeah, this past weekend was chilly but sunny. I was on a boat for about an hour then walking around, all without a hat. I'm glad that I put sunblock on my bald head.

All this talk of potentially burning weather is getting me down a bit, here in damp, grey Vancouver.

But surely a burn of the sort you might get outdoors with highs of 18 degrees celsius is going to look different from one you would get in a tanning salon, yes? This would be considered during the investigation?

If the kid had a farmer burn and police thought it was likely something she got in a tanning booth, I'd be inclined to say that the charge is ridiculous - but it seems more likely to me that they saw that she had a more all-over burn and that is why they concluded the kid had really been in the tanning booth.

The kid could have easily got a sunburn in April in New Jersey without the tanning bed.... but if it was from just being outside, the burn pattern would be different. Since this was reported by a school nurse, I'm thinking the burn pattern was different from what a kid would get outside playing.

Do we know what the kid's burn pattern is?

Mrs. Nutley accuses her detractors of being "jealous, fat, and ugly" in this video (http://www.big1059.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=104668&article=10099764). She also sounds intoxicated, although that may be her normal voice, what with breathing in all the shit she has to put on her skin to keep it from flaking off.

It wasn't a fucking interview that she prepared for, she was accosted by TMZ while going about her business.

I'm not saying that this bitch ain't cray. Obviously she is. But I'm fucking sick and tired of armchair attorneying by the general public. Even if she's drunk at noon (which is legal, if stupid) and super-tanned (which is legal, if stupid) doesn't mean she put her kid in a tanning bed (which is illegal). You see the difference?

I realize you guys are joking, but you actually aren't supposed to drink before going tanning (either in a bed or outside). That shit is hot, so it's a bad idea to be dehydrated and then roast yourself. Also, I've always understood that you'll burn faster/worse if you're dehydrated from drinking.

And FWIW, I imagine it's gotta be pretty draining on even the most mentally stable person to have the entire world attacking your physical appearance, your parenting choices, and to be facing the loss of custody of your daughter. This lady CLEARLY has some issues, so take that normal person's stress reaction and magnify it times 100. So, I don't know if that's drunk or hopped up on Xanax-- frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if she's appearing like a hot mess there due to anti anxiety meds.

Agreed the lady has several suntan bulbs loose.

But, 10 years for child endangerment is total bullsh*t. Ok, repeated exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer. One trip and a sunburn does not equal child endangerment. If we want that kind of draconian law then lets burn the woman at the stake. That'll teach her won't it? What in the world has happened to this country that anybody would be thrown in prison for 10 years over a sunburn?

Taking a underage kid to a suntan place should be a fine. I'd even agree to $750 for each charge. After five charges, then maybe a 30 day jail sentence to drive home the point.

I agree with this. And I have to wonder: what if mom tanned outside by the pool every warm day of the year and kid laid out there with her. Little red headed child gets some sun burns. Does mom go to jail there?

What if it's just a Memorial Day weekend family get together where most of the time is spent outside at the pool and the little girl gets a bad sun burn. Does mom go to jail there?

I suppose those are just talking points. I am certain that putting your kid in a tanning bed is awful and she should suffer some punishment if she did that, but 10 years is a little insane. That said, I'm not even sure I buy that this tiny red headed kid didn't just get burned outside, despite mom's personal insanity.

Actually, in some jurisdictions, it is possible for parents to face child endangerment charges for failing to protect their children from the sun. (Here (http://wizbangblog.com/content/2008/06/15/a-bad-sunburn-can-equal-child-abuse.php) is one such example. Here (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=125838&page=1#.T6VLY9Utcrc) is another. Actually, here is the Google search (https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=severe+sunburn+child+endangerment&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=patricia+krentcil+new+jersey&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=off&tbs=&as_filetype=&as_rights=), with the words "Patricia" "Krentcil" "New" and "Jersey" filtered out, if you'd like to have a look.)

That being said, I've got the girl's complexion, and I (mainly) take care to protect myself from the sun. But I also know firsthand that a severe sunburn hurts like hell. If I choose to be an idiot and fail to protect myself with appropriate clothing and sunscreen, that's on me because I'm an adult and capable of making my own decisions. A child? Not so much.
