Playing on the radio lately...
Parking off Wayne Gretzky Drive: $5.00
Gold Club Seats: $138.00
Having George Laraque check Mike Modano so hard the glass breaks and building shakes so hard you shit your pants: Priceless.
Once again we've gone to war with those souless, morally bereft spawn of Satan known as the Dallas Stars. Sure, they're up one but the war is just getting started. It's David vs. Goliath and we've got a big sack full of stones. It has already gotten bloody and the carnage will continue.
And for what? Lord Stanley's Cup. The wife doesn't understand my passion for the greatest game on earth (I don't get her obsession with Survivor). Sure, there was ten continuous hours of coverage on Saturday but I almost finished the renovations to the basement as I watched the Oilers grease the Stars in game two. I can see it on Ken Hitchcock's face and the faces of his players, they don't want to be playing this team again because they know even if they win they will come out of this series with the shit beaten out of them. The Oilers have kicked it up a few notches and he and the fucking Stars are lucky to be up one when they could just as easily be down 3-0.
The look on Modano's face when the Oilers scored two in 55 seconds last night: Fucking Priceless.
It's not just hockey, it's time to return The Holy Grail back to land of ice and snow. I don't really care who does it whether it's The Oilers, Canucks, Senators, or even (gasp) the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Odieman and I would like to see a Ottawa - Edmonton final. I'm sure our friendship could handle that.
What are you predictions? Even if you're a fan of those souless fuckers from Dallas let us know...
Need somewhere to vent when your team loses? This would be the place.
Can we get a hockey smiley? Perhaps a little guy with missing front teeth?

Last night's Oiler's game was truly a wonderful thing, ruined only by the ending.
And I'm really impressed by what the Leafs are showing so far. Cujo has been awesome, and that guy shadowing Yashin is really having a great playoff.
But sadly, it doesn't matter. The Devils are going to march through the playoffs like Sherman through the south.
At least they have to have their pathetic parade in the Meadowlands parking lot. ::snicker::

I could always start ranting about the above mentioned souless, morally bereft spawn of Satan known as the Dallas Stars, but I find I have this problem -- when I start ranting about them, I start moaning "No goal! No goal! No goal!" over and over again, and then I fall off my chair, foaming at the mouth. It's about as pretty as the Clint Malarchuk footage.

Sweet Heavenly Angels, I was wondering where all of the Oiler fans were.
Go EDMONTON! WOO HOO!
They're my team after the Blackhawks and it's nice to finally be able to see Hockey on television since they get the royal Lord Stanley's Fist when it isn't playoff time.
Last night's game WAS INCREDIBLE...the reaction of the crowd at the goal to send them to overtime gave me goosebumps. Shitty ending to it all, though...

Hey, I'm a Wings fan. I'd love to see the Oilers upset the Stars. That means the Wings play the Blues or the Sharks and Colorado gets to struggle with Edmonton. A hot Oilers teams is the last thing Detroit wants to face in the playoffs.

Only as my default pro team. My real love is the Michigan Wolverines and all their teams. Unfortunately they lost in the Frozen Four to Boston College. I would have loved another NCAA Hockey championship.
Tying it back to the Stanley Cup playoffs. There are many Wolverines playing this year in the playoffs. I, however, am too lazy to look them up and list them here.

Down here in Dallas we are not thrilled that we have to play the Oilers yet again either. But face it, the Oilers have brought everything upon themselves. Their 7th game victory in 1997 is the thing that turned the Stars around. The fact that the Oilers beat the Avs in the first round the next year had people thinking that the Oilers were for real.
Since the upset in 1997 people have been picking the Oilers to beat the Stars, and the Oilers have said that they would rather play the Stars than the Wings or Avs. But guess what? Since the 1997 series the Oilers have won 3 games. Tommy Salo's playoff record against the Stars? 2-10. His over all record against the Stars is something like 3-20.
In the last 3 years, every team that has "wanted" to play Dallas has ended up golfing. Assuming that the snow is off the ground in Edmonton, the Oilers can plan on another early start to golf season.
Anyway, this is once again the most entertaining series in the first round.
PS. A quick thanks to Sergei Zholtok for cough ups.
PPS. Have the cobwebs cleared out of Janne Niinimaa's head?

Speaking as an Avs fan, I'd much rather play Edmonton than eiter the Sharks or the Blues. Edmonton is tough, fast, and gritty (all those wonderful hockey adjectives), but IMHO, not all that good. I think the Avs would coast through them in 4 or 5 games, and I could see a Sharks-Avs series going 7.
I'm not really trying to cut up the Oilers, I like them, they just don't scare me. If you must root for a Canadian team, I'd recommend jumping on the Toronto bandwagon while there is still room. ;)

Guess what, jarbabyj? In the it's-a-small-world department, I've partied with Doug Weight. When he was a baby-faced freshman at Lake Superior State University, a one-time collegiate hockey power in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. My late best friend (as in no-longer-with-us, not as in tardy) went to school there, and the hockey players were regular vistors to the weekend parties I often attended.

Hmmm, and just what does Eddie "don't touch me - i'm famous" Belfour thinks he's doing playing D? Granted, given the ridiculously aged Ledyard and Diduck (geez, couldn't they get Craig Ludwig back?), I'm not surprised the Eagle tries to do a little too much. What with Matvichuk trying to draw penalties 'cuz Laraque is giving him dirty looks, and that dirty fuck Hatcher looking for other hapless schmucks half his size to cheap shot...(still, he busted Roenick's jaw and that was priceless).

Ah, the Dallas Stars.
As a Sharks fan I know your feelings all to well.
As much as I hate to say it, the Sharks will have trouble knocking of the Blues, and if they do, they may be too bloodied to do much more after that. I guess the revenge factor is just too much. But next season, it's the Sharks all the way.
For the cup, I see the Pens and the Avs going all the way. While I like the Penguins and Super Mario can do just about anything, I want the Avs to win it if they can so Borque can retire happily.

This just in...
Oilers 3 - Dallas 2
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! You should see me do the victory dance...
Most noteworthy was the hit Weight layed on Matvichuk at 10 minutes into the opening period. Weight took five minutes and a game misconduct while Matvichuk didn't return to play for the rest of the night. Weight isn't known for his aggressiveness so perhaps he was trying to send a message to his team. The message seems to have gotten through.
It was a seat of your pants affair with the Oilers up one going into the end of the third period. Muller found Keane in front of the net and another Dallas Edmonton tilt goes into overtime. I was screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! because overtime against Dallas has not gone well in the past. Salo was 2-10 against them going into tonight's game
Modano was so tired by the end of the game he could barely stay on his feet. The Oilers showed that they could be as good and in this case better than those fucking spawn of satan from Texas. Modano got ONE shot on goal tonight. Boo fucking hoo. Kudos to Marchant for being his fucking shadow.
Hatcher is a prick. Laraque is the toughest SOB in the league but he's not a fucking goon.
So in OT Ryan Smith goes off after taking one to the face... after taking some stitches he's back out there to set up the winning goal by Mike Comrie, a 20 year old kid who grew up watching the Oilers win five Cups.
I have to give a nod to Belfour because his performance was stellar but let's not forget about the Swede who is parked between the pipes at the other end. Come on Eddie, play some more defense...
Dallas knows that this isn't going to be easy and they could be the one's playing golf in a very short period of time. They really looked beaten tonight as they slunk off with their pointed tails between their cloven hooved little legs.
Wolverine - Instigate me? That will get you five minutes and a game misconduct. You are probably on your knees praying to whatever deity you worship that the Wings don't have to play this hot Edmonton team because it would be an ass kicking of fucking monumental proportions.
The Avalanche have been looking strong? Has anyone noticed that they could just as easily be down 3-0 to the lowly Canucks who have made them fight for every point?
Who said Toronto? Who the fuck are you kidding? I hate them with a passion reserved for child molesters and the tax man. I'm looking for Ottawa to play the way they can and win the next four. They should be able to beat the Leafs in their street clothes yet they are taking it right up the ass. It makes me shake my head and say "What the fuck?" I guess anything is possible in the playoffs... like Edmonton knocking off Dallas.
Anyways... it looks like we're going back to Texas for game five and six and perhaps back here for game seven if the Oilers can't perform an exorcism in Texas.

Yes sir. I'll be on my best behavior sir.
Once Colorado defeats the Canucks, the Red Wings wouldn't have to face Edmonton until the Western Conference Championship. By then, Yzerman and Shanahan should (on my knees praying to whatever deity I worship) be back, even if it is towards the end of the series. Then my money's on the Wings.
Hopefully, Detroit can eliminate the Kings quickly. That means they'll be healthy enough to play a scruffed up Dallas/St. Louis/San Jose withour losing too much momentum.

What did we learn last night?
1) The NHL is serious about cracking down on hits from behind. (Doug Weight)
2). The NHL is not serious about cracking down on hits to the head. (Jason Smith and Scott Stevens again)
3). Hi Opal
4). Tommy Salo may be the most improved player in the league.
What will we learn today?
1). That Colin Campbell is a woman. He sure won't have the balls to suspend Weight.
Since the Caps won last night, I can rant without the appearance of sour grapes.
The officiating last night was horrendous. Zubrus was called for clipping for christ's sake on a perfectly clean hip check. Fortunately, no harm was done on the power play.
However, the next two officiating fuck ups let the Pens back in the game. First, Lemieux leaves his feet to check a player into the boards right in front of the ref. Do you think the NHL's new marketing campaign was called for a penalty? All hockey fans know that Lemieux is never called for a penalty. Within a minute, Ulf Dahlen is called for hooking. The hooking call was legit but wouldn't have happened if St. Mario had been penalized. The Penguins scored on the power play to make it 3-2.
A few minutes later, Joe Reekie is sent to the box. He had his stick between Mario's sainted legs like any good defenseman. Lemieux proceeds to hold Reekie's stick and squirm around. Reekie is called for interference. This happened within two fucking feet of the ref. Even the commentators got off their Mario prayer rugs long enough to mention the call was bullshit. Penguins scored on the power play to tie the game.
Fortunately the Caps won it in OT. But the officiating sucked.

Remember what happened when they suspended Richard back in 1950 odd something? Suspending Weight would have the same effect here. Weight deserved the penalty but I don't think this incident merits a suspension.
According to the media here Weight never intended to hurt Matvichuk, he stated that he expected Matvichuk to turn into him and when Weight realized he wasn't going to it was too late.
Ottawa is gone. Swept up like yesterday's trash. I still can't believe it. Unless the Canucks pulled a rabbit out of a hat they too are polishing up the golf clubs this fine morning. I only watched until the last five minutes and Crawford had already pulled the goalie, Cloutier.
Soooooo...
Game five tonight in Dallas, I am going to start practicing my victory dance just in case. Game six is going to be something else, if the Oilers can knock off Dallas at home (Saturday) all hell will break loose around this city.

I can see what you are saying as an Oiler fan, but look at it from a different perspective. What he intended to do does not really factor into the equation, or at least it shouldn't. In overtime Langenbrunner got called for high-sticking, but he didn't intend to high stick whoever it was. The Oiler player lifted Langenbrunner's stick and got hit in the face. The NHL expects a player to be in control at all times.
An unintentional high stick leads to an Oiler power play and an overtime win. A hit from behind lead to Matvichuck getting a concussion and knocked out of the game.
I don't believe that Doug Weight is a dirty player (Jason Smith and his headhunting is a different matter), at least not like Bryan Marchment. I saw where Weight said he expected Matvichuck to turn like he does 9/10 times. That means that Weight knew there was a 10% chance that he wouldn't. That means he should get a suspension. I would suggest 1 or 2 games. Also, I would like to see it at the start of next season, rather than the playoffs. The NHL needs to have its best players on the ice, plus I wouldn't want a fresh Doug Weight on the ice for a game 7 if it got that far.

So I'm doing my best to stay awake and watch my beloved Wings take their series with L.A. by the throat last night/this morning. (Being the only Western Conference team in the Eastern Time Zone does often suck at this time of year.)
I begin to nod off after 1 a.m. There's eight minutes to go, and the Wings have things well in hand. They're up, 3-0, and they've been dominating the entire game. I'm stirred from my sleep for some reason a while later. The game is still on. There's a minute left. It's tied 3-3! That will wake a Wing fan up in a hurry. I was quite awake for the conclusion of the Staples Center Shocker. L.A. 4, Detroit 3, OT.
What ... the ... mother ... fuck ... happened?
Does anyone know a voodoo high priestess or something that can rub healing chicken bones over little Yzerman and Shanahan dolls?
Wonder if Bowman will go with Manny Legace in goal Saturday? My guess is no. That goal that barely went across the line was kind of bad, as was the rebound that the Kings scored on in OT, but Osgood actually played pretty good.
Still, when you have an historic collapse like that, you've got to shake things up. You'll be seeing some names you non-Wings-fans have hardly heard of in the lineup Saturday.
Hey, the playoffs are all about adversity. That's what makes them great. Hopefully this will be the kick in the ass that gets the Wings shit together for the long haul (are you listening, Fedorov?).

WHAT A FUCKING GAME!
Dallas 4 - Edmonton 3 In overtime, again.
The only thing that could have improved it would have been if we had won this one in Dallas. The boys woke up after napping through two and were going for it in the third period, scoring three goals in under three minutes. It was those grumpy old fucks who spoiled what looked like a miraculous comeback. Muller scored the winner in OT, his first goal in 30 games. I have to admit that he has always been one of my favourite players since his days as a Canadien.
FUCKITY FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!
In regard to suspending Weight, Matvichuk even stated tonight that it was just some bad luck that the buckle on his helmet gave out when Weight hit him and he knew there was no evil intended on the part of Captain Doug. End of discussion.
And one more thing... it is not pronounced ROY. It is more like "Ruah", I can say it but maybe someone can spell it phonetically for these french challenged individuals we have here. Matt??
Okay, two more things...

Guess who got hurt in a knee to knee hit on Tuesday?
Bryan Marchment. He isn't the only person in the league who makes questionable hits, and I don't think that he intentionally goes out trying to hurt people. Most of his big hits come in open ice against a skater who has his head down, which everyone knows is a big no-no.

If the Oilers would play for 60 minutes like they did in game 4 they would be better off. They can't play only 5 minutes like they did last night or 1 minute like in game 3 and expect to win. It just won't happen.
and I don't think that he intentionally goes out trying to hurt people.
True. Marchment is not the only player in the league that makes questionable hits. However, he is one of a very small number that make questionable hits on a regular basis. Say what you want be he has shown time and again that he will drag his leg and make the knee on knee hit. Many players are guilty of making knee on knee hits, but they usually only do it once. Marchment has done it again and again.
Plus, if you don't think that he tries to injure people, look at his hit on Nieuwendyk in the playoffs back in 98. He had Nieuwendyk in a vulnerbal position and then, quite clearly, lifted his knee and drove it into the boards. He had only one intent when he made that play. Plus, why do you think that the Oilers got rid of him?

I can't believe that people still bring this up, 2 years after the fact.
First, it was a goal. Hull had established control of the puck, meaning his foot could be in the crease leagally.
Second, the Sabres had scored only one goal in the preceeding 110 minutes of the series. They weren't exactly helping themselves.
Hows about the Leafs in 7?

Well, that excuse stinks just as much now as it did two years ago. The fact remains that officials had been calling back goals in identical situations all year round but they fucked up in the final game. That Hull had control of the puck was just an ex post facto rationalization on the part of officials to save their sorry asses.
On a happier note, the Sabres humiliated the Flyers in game 6. 8 to 0. Woohoo!! I'll bet Bobby Clarke wishes he'd traded traded Lindros when he had the chance.
Also, I can't wait for Devils vs. Leafs. Unlike last year, New Jersey is going to have a fight on their hands.

Fuck!
It was as bad as getting swept. So what if Detroit won the first two games, they lost four straight. Two in overtime no less. They had leads going into the third period and lost. They were up 3-0 with 7 minutes to go and lost. They did everything you could possibly do to lose that series.
I fear rebuilding is upon us. If not this year, then next. Do they really have the hunger and talent to make another run? No. All our primary talent is getting old and the younger guys haven't been stepping up.
Well at least this way, I'll soon be able to afford a hockey ticket again.

A question.
This may have to spawn a whole other thread, but why is it that Mario seems to be 'off limits'? I notice whenever someone dares to get in his face or throw a hit to him, the commentators go WILD. BUCK, FUCKING WILD.
"AND HERE'S SOMETHING FOLKS! He's getting in MARIO's FACE! He's ARGUING WITH THE ONE AND ONLY HOLY SAVIOR MARIO"
Anyone who steps out of the pits of hell to knock him into the boards ends up on Sportscenter as really having a set of balls to do this to Mario.
He's still just a hockey player. He's not untouchable. He's going to get into fights and get thrown around and get punched, I'm sure. Just because he's supposedly the greatest, doesn't mean he's immortal.
It reminds me of Michael Jordan. People went crazy when someone would dare to foul him. Or Brett Fucking Favre, who gets up and cries to the officials every time he's sacked. Just because you're great, doesn't mean you're not still in the game.
I just don't know who to root for anymore. I can NEVER pick the right team to follow in the playoffs. I've been wrong three years in a row. I wish the Blackhawks would get in so I could be done with this second guessing. :)

He's off limits because he's the greatest player on the planet. He doesn't play dirty like others do, so he should get that same courtesy extended to him.

HUH? Well then, why aren't the Pens winning every game 22 to nothing? If he's the greatest player ever, let's just get out of his way and let him do what he wants. I don't think he returned to hockey to be treated like a fucking glass unicorn skating around the rink.
hits and scuffles are part of hockey...fights, no. If he's going to be pissed every time someone touches him, he should have stayed home.
and I'm specifically NOT rooting for the Pens for this reason. I love Jagr (In fact, I had a letter published in ESPN the magazine to this effect), but I'm not going to cheer for special treatment.

jarbaby,
I think you're forgetting the time he was poleaxed by Adam Graves in the playoffs a couple of years ago. He had to sit out the rest of the playoffs with a broken wrist. The viewership of those playoffs diminished considerably.
Yes, hockey is a rough sport. Mario has proven himself to be fragile. But the league and its players know exactly where their money comes from.
It's not in their best interest to take Mario out. That would kill a considerable amount of interest in hockey, which is already in shaky financial shape.
Mario is a great hockey player. Period. That he's a whiner doesn't change that one iota.
BTW, I doubt the league tells the players to keep their hands off. I would bet the players do it all on their own.

Oh, I thought we were talking about sports. I didn't realize we were talking about ratings and money. IIRC, people hit Wayne Gretzky all the time. Baby, hockey is never going to be the moneymaker that baseball and basketball and football are. T.V. and radio had better get used to it. Hockey is the behavior challenged whacked out son in the sports family, and it's always going to be that way.
BTW, I doubt the league tells the players to keep their hands off. I would bet the players do it all on their own.
IANAHockeyCoach, but if a player came off the ice and said "I could have stopped that goal, but I didn't want to hit Mario" I'd fucking kill him.

This is false. Out and out false. In the last month or so of the 1998-99 season the Washington Capitals scored a goal that was a parallel of Hulls' overtime goal. The officals on the scene of the Caps game ruled no goal at the time. The Caps protested and 2 or 3 days after that game they got a call from the league with an apololgy saying that the goal should have counted. Keep in mind that it was Caps GM McPhee who brought this to public attention.
Bitching about the goal still doesn't address the fact that Buffalo only had 1 goal in the last 110+ minutes of the series.

As to the Mario issue, well, I'm not gonna disagree with the idea that people seem afraid to touch him. But I don't think that it's anybody's particular fault. Let's face it: whether Mario is the best player ever to strap on skates (though I think he is) is pretty unimportant. What MATTERS is the fact that he's built up enough of a reputation that not a whole lot of players out there want to be dubbed as "The guy who broke Mario, so that he could never play again."
And I wouldn't say he's a whiner. Sure, he gets hurt, but that's not quite his fault, is it. What he doesn't do is go and whine to the officials every time he gets hit. He just takes it in stride and keeps playing. It's the goddam announcers who start screaming bloody murder.

you're right. I didn't mean to imply that he's a whiner. Brett Favre's a whiner. I lay all blame on the announcers who feel he should have a forcefield around him. I think Mario's in to play the game, not be a little skating trophy on the ice.

Root for the Pens? As much as I think Mario is awesome this just won't happen. I don't think that there is any rule against hitting the guy unless it's Mario's own rule. He is pretty damn hard to hit as he seems to have that uncanny ability to know where everyone is all the time. Add to that the fact that he is a pretty big guy and nearly impossible to get off the puck.

I'm not sure I see where you're going with this. Buffalo only had 1 goal. Dallas only had 1 goal. Sports fans, this is known as a "tied game." So somehow this means that if both teams only have one goal, the officials should then change a rule (and it was a really dumb rule that no one liked, but a rule none-the-less) to allow a goal for Dallas?
I like to pick on the Dallas Stars as much as the next decent hockey fan, but in this case, the great fiery ball of anger, rage and betrayal that now permanently resides in the depths of my psyche is directed at Bryan Lewis, the officals, and the league.

Mario Lemieux is easily one of the five greatest hockey players ever to have laced 'em up. Wayne Gretzky tops the list. Period.
Sorry to add to the bad news jarbabyj, but have you ever seen the average professional athlete wife? I think the industry parlance is "trophy wives" (which is not to cast aspersions on your undoubtedly comely attributes ;))
Mario appears to be hard to hit because 1) he's a fairly big fella with exceptional balance, and 2) the man wouldn't begin to know where to look for the corners, hence his 'hittability' factor's fairly low. I'm not belittling his ability, it's just not part of his game. And he sure as hell doesn't earn his exemption as a 'reward' for his lack of dirty play. If that's the case, I'm sure Paul Kariya is wondering why his head makes a sloshing sound when he shakes it - ditto Mike Modano.
Gretzky never really 'got away with murder' Airman Doors, he never got into much of anything - for comaprison, see point 2) above. He did however have one memorable fight with Phil Sykes of the L.A. Kings in the mid-80's (memorable not by virtue of it's quality, but by the fact that he had one - it was really more of slapfest than anything...)
And now, the meat...
Avs v Kings: I'm glad the Kings beat the Dead Things, but the Avs are too good at damn near everything to lose, especially when emotional victories can only carry you so far.
Blues v Stars: Has the potential to be a quick series, or go the distance. Gut feeling is the Blues just don't have what it takes to beat the Stars' experience - as much as I'd like to see the Stars Fall...
Pens v Sabres: Lemieux or no Lemieux, this is gonna be about as exciting as watching paint dry. The Sabres are one of hockey's least exciting teams (with the exception of the Caps). And I'm sorry, but I don't want to see the Pens hoist the Cup simply because I don't agree with Lemieux's self-serving motives for coming out of retirement. It reminds me too much of the New York Oilers winning in '94. Call me old-fashioned, but I like to see slow build teams go the distance, not the express-lane, 5 superstar free agents-or-less Cup winners.
Devils v Buds: God I hate the Leafs! I hope Stevens checks Shayne Corson into the good sense to retire.
Bourque needs a Ring.

You are of course, correct. I was going by memory and for some reason 110 minutes stood out for me. I was wrong. The actual number is closer to 210 minutes. Game 6 ended at 14:51 of 3OT. Let us call that game 115 minutes. Game 5 ended in regulation with the Sabres being shut out. We're up to 175 minutes with the Sabres being held to one goal. In game 4 Dixon Ward scored the gwg at at 7:37 of the second period. So, that means 207 minutes in which the Sabres only scored one goal. Not the kind of numbers that are generally equated with winning hockey games.
As far as the officals changing a rule, that is bullshit. As I posted earlier, the NHL had set a precedent with the apology to the Caps GM George McPhee. Also, there was a memo that addressed the very issue that had been sent to all GM's in the league.
Also, Bryan Lewis, the NHL's director of officiating said,
"We determined that Hull played the puck, had possession of the puck and the goal was good," Lewis said.
"His foot was in first. Our immediate reaction was that it didn't matter. Our view was that he had control. Hull was in possession and control of the puck."
"Every such goal has been reviewed by the NHL since the start of the season, including this one," Lewis said.

The first thing I do when I turn on this beast is pop over to Yahoo and read the news. To what did my wondering eyes appear but the score from last nights Leafs (2) - Devils (0) game.
Joseph looks like he has locked the door and thrown away the key by posting his third shutout in a row. Thats over 256 minutes without anyone putting one through the pipes to score on the Leafs and gives him a .58 goals against in the playoffs and a .981 save percentage. Fucking amazing.
And then there's Mario and the boys in Buffalo handing the Sabres a 3-0 whupping. The Dominator got himself dominated last night while the rookie Hedberg stopped everything the Sabres threw at him.
Go Leafs! Go Pens!

Minor nitpick. CuJo has 3 shutouts for the playoffs. He had 2 in a row in games 1 & 2 vs Ottawa, but the Sens did score 3 goals in the last 2 games of the series. That being said, Cujo is playing extremely well. Being in Dallas, I know what he is capable of. In fact, he is the reason that the Oilers have been picked to beat the Stars in each of the last 4 years. Note to sports writers: Joseph no longer plays in Edmonton!!
I'll stick with my pick of the Leaves in 7. Carolina exposed flaws in the Devils (Just as the Canucks did in the Avs) the Leafs are better able to capitalize on them. Getting held to 6 shots in game 6 against the Devils last year was the best thing that happened to the Leafs, it forced them to make the additions they did.

I think there is perhaps a fine line between a conversation about the the past performance of one's favorite teams, which naturally often becomes quite heated but is, in essense, a manifestation of the great enthusiasm and respect one has for the sport itself, and a personal accusation of poor sportsmanship, which I consider to be quite possibly the most vile insult one human being can hurl at another. Since this is the internet, and it is very easy to assume a tone that in fact wasn't present, I'm going to go on from here as if Adam Yax's comment was made in the spirit of the former rather than the latter.
What excuse shall we use this year? Every year, this is a big debate in the secret society of Sabres fans. Right now, I'm going with placing quite a bit of blame on Hasek himself. In what is clearly the twilight of his career (and his twilight is considerably better than many players' peaks), he consistantly breaks down when he realizes that his reputation is not quite enough to actually stop the shots on the ice. Goals #1 and #2 in Thursday's game were nothing to comment on, but after #2 he pretty much bought the farm when he allowed goal #3.
I don't mean to take anything away from Hedberg, who did play a good game, but one thing that astonished me was the fact that a good percentage of Buffalo's scoring opportunities were defeated by the Sabres themselves. Our passing game has got to be the worst of the play-off teams.
I was mulling over whether or not to include a scathing critique of Kalinin, but since his mind-bogglingly stupid performance didn't directly impact any of Thursday's goals, I think I shall hold that in reserve. I swear, if he fanned the ice any more, Buffalo would be called on a delay of game penalty while the arena had to re-freeze the rink.
As of now, I don't have any problems with the officiating in this series, but I'll be sure to let you know if I do. ;)
Oh, and among ourselves, no one really thinks the phantom goal was an excuse for anything. We just like to savour the irony of it all.

After recovering from the brain aneurysm I had on the comfort of my very own couch, my only thought was that we should incorporate the James Patrick Ass Shot into our strategy for next year. I can see it now "That's the seventh goal this year for James Patrick's Ass! Buffalo now leads 1 - 0, with the only goal of the game scored by James Patrick's Ass, with an assist by Varada!" Maybe we should give James Patrick's Ass its own player number, and make him wear it proudly displayed across his rear end.
Unfortunately, despite the stellar potential of James Patrick's Ass, we're seriously hurting without Zhitnik and McKee.

I must admit that I'm a little conflicted by this series--the Sabres are my second-favorite team. I wanted the Pens to beat them; I did notwant the Pens to kill them.
(But McKee provides the answer to the question some people brought up before. Why don't opposing players really lay into Mario? 'Cause it can hurt.)

Not in the least. Zhitnik was watching the puck, not Kovalev, and therefore didn't see the check coming when he should have. If you get blindsided, you're gonna get knocked on your ass, it's that simple. The hit was perfectly fair, and I think that if it was cheap, Kovalev's already paid the price. After all, he's going to have a price no his head for the rest of the series.
Now, if you'll excuse me...<goes off to continue celebrating>

That's bullshit, yes Zhitnik was skating through the middle while looking at the puck, but that doesn't give a player carte blanche to make an illegal and vicious hit. Kovalev gave Zhitnik a shot with his elbow up right in his jaw. Perfectly illegal and cheap. Kovalev isn't that kind of player, I know, but it was bullshit hit and he should be suspended for it.

Forearm, maybe, but no elbow. Look, he hit with his arms and pushed straight forward, not up into the face. Just because Zhitnik had his head down at the level of Kovalev's arms is his own problem. He could have easily led with his stick if you want something dirty. That was a clean hit against somebody who had taken numerous "cheap" (but not illegal) shots in the series. And in any case, it was hitting the ice that gave him the concussion, not the check itself.
That McKee hit on Mario was my favorite hockey moment this year. line up Mario and smash your own face into the ice. Beautiful.
How about that St. Louis game/Dallas game? I turned it on somewhere in the middle to see them cleaning up blood. Now THAT'S hockey.
Let me point out that Hedberg has now passed up CuJo in goals against average and save percentage thanks to the Leafs' 6-5 loss.

It is, in fact, no worse than being the sore losers that the Sabres have been for the last two playoffs. Gracious losers say, "we lost to a better team". Bad losers blame the officals or the ice conditions, anything but themselves.

So Jersey takes game three in OT. It looks like it is going to be a good series with Brodeur and Cujo manning the pipes as well as they are. Last nights game was a spectators dream with great action, lots of chances, and outstanding goaltending.

I wish I could agree, but I don't. Historically, the Pens can climb out of just about any playoff hole (they could probably come back from 0-3, at least against the Caps), but when they blow a lead they fall apart. I now expect the Sabres to win this series. I hope I'm wrong, but this looks like last year to me--different opponent, same old shit.
On the bright side, I expect St. Louis to help the Avs continue their tradition of flopping in the Conference Finals.

Game 5 was a perfect metaphor for the series as a whole--the Pens go up 2-0, then choke and lose it in overtime 3-2. Like I said before--different opponent, but same old shit.
I think we as Pens fans got caught up in the exitement of Mario returning, and forgot that even with him the Pens have always flopped in the playoffs--usually against teams they should have beaten. The only exceptions to this were in '91 and '92...and it's worth wondering whether the vital ingredient those years was really Mario, or whether it was really someone like Bryan Trottier. It's not always measurable by goals and points.
Feynn

If I were a betting man I would be putting down some coin on the Leafs and the Sabres, and maybe even on that longshot known as the Los Angeles Kings.
The Leafs almost blew it the other night after going up 2-0 but they managed to pull one out of the hat. The Pens also had a 2-0 lead against the Sabres but couldn't hold it. They face elimination on Monday night whereas the Leafs could burn the Devils. The Air Canada Centre might not be able to handle the stress if 17,000 fans get to see their team beat Jersey. If Toronto goes on to win the Cup we won't be able to live with those folks who already think that TO is the centre of the universe... :)
I am going to be tuning in to see the Kings / Avs tonight. I have this thing for the underdog and the Kings seem to be on quite a roll. Potvin has been playing outstanding hockey, even more amazing when you consider who's shots he's been stopping. He will probably have to contend with the return of Sakic tonight so we'll have to see what this does for the Avs.
Did anyone catch Coach's corner on Saturday and hear Cherry's defense of Domi? He made a good point in that other players have done far worse and suffered less punishment than Domi has. Neidermayer did have some payback coming to him, you can't hit Domi in the face with your stick (repeatedly) and get away with it as he did earlier in the game. Refs didn't call a thing there.
Domi will be appealing the decision. Can you imagine having to watch your team go on to win the Cup with you sitting out? That would be too extreme a punishment.

Anybody see the interview with Kevin Stevens in the locker room after the game? "I don't think I've ever seen Kasper score in PRACTICE, let alone a game." Marvelous.
I remain convinced that the only reason that Kasper made that goal was that he was trying to hurt Hasek. God bless his series-winning little heart, he was aiming for the Dominator's head, and missed. The goal's just as good, though. They can always run Hasek down in the parking lot.:D

Now now, Airman--we've had a good run. Most years the Pens go down against teams they have no business losing to (even last year--the Flyers were a better team, but when you get them down 2 games to 0 you gotta finish them). The Devils are a damn good hockey team--there's a reason they're the defending champions. I expect them to repeat.
Besides, the Pens accomplished two very important goals this year: they enabled us to stick our tongues out at Flyer fans (hey, guys, we were happy to avenge your team by knocking the Sabres out for ya :p), and they got rid of the Caps again. (And again...and again...and again....) :D

I'm just not sure they can get it done without a second line which they seem to have lost with the Forsberg injury. Tonight could be the night. The Devils are 60 minutes away from taking a little trip to to the rockies.
That is where I was for the last four days with no radio, no T.V. and no newspapers to distract from the awe inspiring beauty that is the Canadian Rockies. I see that the playoffs and this polite little hockey thread have gone on without me.
So the Pens are getting their asses whupped in major fashion. Who woulda thunk it?
Is Brodeur that good or do the Pens just suck like no one else?
I am hoping that Lemieux and Jagr get that big monkey off their backs and I mean soon, like tonight.

Well, to be honest, Feynn, Brodeur had nothing to do with it. The Devil's defense did.
But don't you all get too ecstatic just yet. I've put in a call to a Mister Jack Chick, who is none to happy about New Jersey's mascot. Expect he and his followers to have burned Jersey to the ground by morning.
Ahhhhhhh, who am I kidding. :(
Still, it was a helluva run, and Falcon, I don't think that your pet team gained anything by having the people who stomped THEM get stomped themselves. But hey, if you need further convincing, I'm sure the boys'll be willing to give your team an ass-whupping next year...

Ah, the smell of sour grapes permeates the thread. Pens fans could be nasty and say something like "Oh damn, we still only have two more Cups than Washington...which means we have two." Or perhaps "Oh damn, we still have one fewer Cups than Chicago...though at least we won ours after the Kennedy Administration." But of course we have too much class to say anything like that.
I care not at all who wins the Cup now--my only interest is that it goes seven games, preferably with overtime in all seven. But my official prediction is New Jersey in six...and my unofficial qualifier is that I'm not sure it'll take Devils that many games.

So it's the Avs and the Devils in the final. It should be one hell of a series and maybe even fair that the best team from the east faces off with the best team from the west on Saturday night to begin that fight for that holy of holies, the Stanley Cup.
The odds on either team to win seem pretty even to me and even with Forsberg out of the lineup the Avs will be a force to be reckoned with.
It will be a great series to watch although I didn't want to see either of these teams playing. Any team I was cheering for lost, can I pick them or what?
As soon as I decide who to cheer for you'll know that that team hasn't got a hope in hell of winning.
Will it be the Devils or Avs? Who is willing to pay me to NOT cheer for their team?
Heh heh heh heh.

Yes, this is going to be one hell of a series. Being a fan first and formost of the game itself, I dont think you could ask for a better match up. Even being an Avs fan, I would love to see this series go 7 games. So I guess the big questions are if Roy can stay hot, and can the Devils D stay tough...

LOL, never mind. For some reason, I thought that New Jersey might actually bring a hockey team to the NHL Championship Series. If I'd known that they were going to field the 1952 Angolian Couples Figure Skating team, I never would have predicted that this would go to 7 games.
You know, Roy is an awe inspiring goalie, but I think that I could have shut out the Devils tonight. Thank God for Pierre Lacroix.

Sometime after the start of the second period I just dozed off, imagine my surprise this morning when I see that the Avs handed out an ass whupping of monumental proportions.
Beat them like a rented mule they did.
Roy is simply great during the regular season but come playoff time he becomes a wall. He will tie Drydens consecutive playoff win record if they win game two.
Looks like it's either going to be one hell of a series or a total thrashing of the Devils at the hands of Sakic and the rest of the Avs if Jersey can't figure out how to get that little rubber disc past the greatest goalie on earth.
I don't think I will sleep through game two...

Tonights game was a fine example of how each team plays two completely different games, and whomever gets their game to work, wins.
Avs -- wide open game, lots of speed
Devils -- the trap, the ever so ugly trap
Game 2, trap works, Avs loose
Game 3, trap does not work, Avs win...

I guess the most memorable moment in last nights game was Roys blunder 8 minutes into the third period. I'm sure nearly every Avs fan out there said "FUCK!" at exactly the same moment, that moment being when Gomez tapped the puck into the Avs net.
All things being said, Roy was still the only thing that kept the Devils from making it a 6 - 2 game, the Avs only managed 12 shots on goal through the entire game while Roy stopped 32 shots.
Whoever wins the Grail this year is really going to deserve it.

Man, finally got to watch a game!
Let me just say that I pity those that live in California. Drove from the LA area all the way up past Bakersfield during game 3, and not 1 single radio station carried the game. Not one!
There were 5 or 6 sports stations, and every single one of them were taking phone calls and having in depth discussions about the Supreme Courts verdict regarding the PGA. Versus a live Finals game? What's wrong with those people?
Can't complain too much though, Devils got spanked in that one. At least the game I got to watch I got to cheer and hoot and holler to :)
Will be somewhere between WA and OH for game 5 tomorrow, wish me luck finding the game on the radio.

It's going to be a tough road for my Avs to pull off this series, especially after tonight. I haven't lost faith, but the Avs had better pick it up if they're going to do it.
The announcers dangling Forsberg in front of us was pretty cruel, I thought.
Feynn
06-07-2001, 01:08 AM
There's no way Forsberg will play even though the guy would probably lace em up if they let him.
The Devils must lose tonight. They just have to. Game 7 in Colorado sounds really good to me.
Pleaseohpleaseoohplease don't let those unrepentant spawn of Satan win another Cup.

06-07-2001, 10:28 PM
Wow, looks like the Avs didn't need Forsberg. Colorado's back, for now at least.
I have to admit that I'm a little dissapointed in this series. I may be wrong, but it seems like we haven't seen both teams play at their best in the same game. One game, the Avs come out playing their best and the Devils seem to be off-kilter, and in the next game it's reversed.
For example, in this game Roy was on fire, but Brodeur (who is an excellent goalie) missed several saves that he should have been able to make.
I just hope that for the next game both teams come in and play at the top of their ability. May the best team win! (and may that team be the Avalanche)

Roy was outstanding in the first period, he could not have played any better and when he's that hot, beating the Avs is virtually impossible.

I'm disappointed that it wasn't closer at the end--what I reallywanted was a 7th game overtime. But I have to hand it to the Avs--to come back from 3-2 down and dominate the last two games against the Devils like that was pretty damn impressive. A very well-deserved Stanley Cup.

I'm a little intoxicated from the celebration, but I have a few things to say before going to sleep:
Seeing Bourque hold up the cup was a wonderful sight, despite the massive exploitation by ABC
Will Al Michaels ever forgive Roy for the "gaffe" in game four? Everyone else has, since, you know, if it wasn't for Roy we never would have gotten past the Kings. I have the feeling that when the Broncos open up Monday Night Football this season, I'm going to hear Al Micheals say "Four months ago, in this very city..."
During the post game interviews Adam Foote stumbled up to one the cameras with beer in hand and wearing halloween teeth that were hideously twisted and bloody. My friends and I laughed for about twenty minutes thereafter. Foote rocks!
I'm biased, but I think that the team with the most heart won. The Devils put in a good game, better than most of their games in the series, but it just wasn't enough.
Roy is the greatest goalie in the history of the sport.
I'm really glad that the Denver Riots part IV were not as bad as they have been previously (I think).
Even better than Foote's fake teeth joke was when one of the announcers asked Hinote what it felt like to when the Stanley Cup in his rookie year. Hinote begain his answer with "Well, I figured that since I was here I might as well."
I really need to get some sleep.
Just because we're in the pit... THE AVALANCHE FUCKING KICKED SOME FUCKING GOD DAMN ASS!!
Energy draining.... super powers fading.... must sleep...
