View Full Version : Return of the NYC Thursday Night Dope-Dinners

Yes, after a summer of extreme intermittancy, it's time to get back to the semi-irregular New York City Doper Dinner Get-Togethers.

The first of these will be this Thursday, August 23rd at our old favorite Blondie's on West 79th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam. 1/9 train to 79th or B/C train to 81st.

As usual, we'll start at about 6:30 and go on 'til we're done with the chicken wings and pitchers of beer.

Come around and we'll have a toast to our brand new moderator and NYC stalwart, DrMatrix.

If you can make it, post here to let the world know and keep the thread visible. If you don't get a chance to post, just show up.

See you Thursday!

I think I would love to have me some wings and see everyone again!

Thanks for resurrecting these, Billdo.

Hmm....for a rare Eve sighting, I just might be able to make it. Perhaps around 9:30, if anyone will still actually be there.

Dr. Matrix is a mod now? Nice! I'll make it a point to be there, and hopefully I'll be able to coerce JerseyDiamond to join me.

...Unless you'll all be gone by about 8 or 8:30. I work until 7...

If and when I'm employed again, I may start joining you fine people. As it stands, I can't afford to spring for good eats very often, and I refuse to let anybody else pay for me. Except Governor Pataki, of course. ;)

I'd love to go, but I've got a studio jam this Thursday night and then I have to go see my friend's band play at the Hogs N' Heifers on the Upper East Side.

Lemme know 'bout the next one, though.

OK, it won't kill me to go down Friday AM instead.

Mark me down.

Please folks, remember to send me home at a reasonable hour. Would it be O.K to bring the boy? That'll ensure I get home.

I'd like to make it.

("Who he?"

"Oh, you know... that guy."

"Oh, right. That guy. Er... which guy?"

"Mags brought him to the last one."

"Oh... THAT guy!!! I still don't remember him."

"Shrug.")

Probably be along a little late, as my office doesn't let me out of my cage until 7pm. Don't wait on the drinking on my account.

Wow! Eve might show up at a bar and wings joint. Who'da thunk it? (Actually, Eve, the resturant part is not smokey at all, and there's a variety of good food.)

And, Maeglin, if you force us to, we'll just have to hang around and drink beers 'til 9:30 or so. But, Joe_Cool, we won't wait for you unless you bring JerseyDiamond.

Cap'nCrude, as far as good eats goes, Blondies is quite reasonable. There's a menu on their webpage (http://blondies.citysearch.com/) if you want to see if it fits in your budget.

Golly, THespos and GrandfatherTrout, can't you think of better excuses.

Biggirl, we would never think of keeping you out late. Bring the boy (and I assume you mean your son, 'cause I'm not sure your husband would be as effective at making sure you get home at a reasonable hour -- but bring Houseman as well, too).

And Pixellent, just hang around with the NY Dopers for a while, and after a few short months or years we'll begin to recognize you as someone more than "Hey You!" Can't wait to meet you.

And the rest of ya's -- see you there.

Maeglin
08-21-2001, 12:31 PM
And, Maeglin, if you force us to, we'll just have to hang around and drink beers 'til 9:30 or so.

Somehow I doubt that much force will be required. If I am running on time, I'll pop on down. Otherwise, expect me when you see me, blah blah blah.

I'll bring the boy. Maybe even Missy Funga will make an appearance. Missy Funga keeps chickening out at the last minute. If Houseman comes (he just might) then my reason to go home early will be gone.

I'm such a dirty stay out.

OK gang, since it's going to be a big one, I've called in a reservation for 14 or so at Blondies for 6:30 under the name of "Cecil Adams."

Whoever gets there on time (and chances are it won't be me), take the table and order a pitcher of beer (or two . . or three . . .). Most folks seem to get there by 7'ish, but we know that there'll be some latecomers.

See you tomorrow.

Eve
08-23-2001, 08:38 AM
I haven't been on the Upper West Side for years . . . Is there any time-killing place around there? It's supposed to rain, so window-shopping is out. But if I leave work at 5:00-ish, I'll need a nearby library or Barnes & Noble or something to hide from the downpour and kill some time.

Haven't really done that neighborhood in about 15 years—does Amsterdam still suck and Columbus is nice, or has it reversed itself by now?

OxyMoron
08-23-2001, 09:48 AM
There's a Barnes & Noble just around the corner on Broadway and 82nd (in fact, IIRC it took over the old Shakespeare & Co. space). There's also the St. Agnes (http://www.nypl.org/branch/man/sa.html) branch of the NYPL on Amsterdam near 81st - but you'll note it closes at 6:00.

Personally, I'm perfectly happy wandering around Zabars, especially the housewares section - often good deals for sale items. Laytner's Linens sometimes has decent sales, too.

And don't forget, there's Harry's Shoes, with the best selection of sizes in New York. Prices are nothing special, but boy is the service good.

Eve
08-23-2001, 03:40 PM
Shakespeare & Co. is gone? Augh! Shows how long since I've been up in that neck o' the woods. Well, I'll be killing time at that B&N on B'way between 82nd–83rd, if any of you wanna come cruising for me beforehand.

friedo
08-23-2001, 04:07 PM
Ahem. Ah, yes. Remember me? From back in the day at that place? The really really big one we had in the winter? Right, that one. Well, I'm going to make it some time between 7:00 and 8:00. And....ah shit, it's raining out. Hrmmm. Well I'll start walking towards the subway when it stops raining, but I will get there. Promise.

:)

Hoo-boy. That was a great evening folks! Thanks!

And stuyguy even showed up and finally brought me the stuff. Thanks stuyguy.

Now, for my confesssion.

I left early (well, earlier than most) because I'm a corporate lacky and had to work today. I went home and soon thereafter went to sleep.

And then I woke up, at three in the morning, in a cold sweat, heart beating like snare drum, and made a realization

I didn't leave any money for the food/beer when I left.

I'm really, really sorry. I feel like such an ass. So next time, (Assuming, of course, that I was not responsible for the bankruptcy of the Emergency Doper Food Fund) I promise to pay for two people.

I remember SOMEone asked me for these lyrics last night; was it Oxy or Stuyguy?

Chorus:
O Genevieve, Sweet Genevieve,
The days may come, the days may go,
But still the hands of mem'ry weave
The blissful dreams of long ago.

O Genevieve, I'd give the world
To live again the lovely past!
The rose of youth is dew-impearl'd,
But now it withers in the blast.

I see thy face in ev'ry dream,
My waking thoughts are full of thee,
Thy glance is in the starry beam
That falls along the summer sea!
Fair Genevieve, my early love! The years but make thee dearer far. My heart shall never, never rove; Thou art my only guiding star.
For me the past has no regret. Whate'er the years may bring to me I bless the hour when first we met, The hour that gave me love and thee!

Due to the fantastical success of last night's rendezvous, and to the spectacular failure of myself to cough up any cash, I hereby take it upon myself to announce the location for next week's (Thursday, Aug 30) dinnertime doperfest:

Ruby Foo's (http://66.129.68.240/search/Details.asp?RID=20072&NDPH=ruby+foo&VID=1&PID=1&LID=14), 1626 Broadway, between 49th and 50th.

This is one of my favorite places; you can get everything from Sushi to Chinese to Thai food. A shmorgous(sp?!) board of asian cuisine, if you will.

And they have beer. Lots of beer.

Let me know if you can come and I will make a reservation for 7:00!

This afternoon, I set up a NYC Straight Dope mailing list on my Internet server. I thought it would be easier to use a list server to keep in touch and plan dopefests, thursday night lunches, all that good stuff, if we used an automated list instead of doing a reply-all every time.

If you guys are interested in using it, send an e-mail to majordomo@straybullet.net with nothing in the message body except:
subscribe nyc-dope

Once you're subscribed, just send e-mail to nyc-dope@straybullet.net and it will go to everybody on the list.

If nobody uses it, I'll feel kind of stupid for putting out the effort to set it up, but at least now I know how to set up a majordomo list server. So there. :)

I prefer to think of myself as "the kibitzer," which, for those who are scratching their heads, is the guy who stands around making remarks about what everone else is doing while not himself participating; this gives everyone else a much-needed release after the game, as they are now entitled to chase the smartassed little jerk out of the bowling alley and kick him unconscious.

Ooh! Sounds like fun! Where do I sign up?! :D

I warn you all now, I am probably the worst bowler you've ever seen. In college, I went bowling with some of the soon-to-be-freshmen, and got my butt thoroughly whomped. So you might want to make sure you aren't standing anywhere in a 30 foot radius when I release the ball!

By the way, what time is this tomorrow night? Need to know how long I have to hang out at my job for... which is NO fun without Internet, letmetellyou!

Yeah, I've had trouble with that list myself. I have NOT made any reservations, but I'm not entirely sure it's needed. They get really busy on the weekends, but I'm not sure about Thursdays. I'm gonna go either way cause I aint bowled in a while. I'll be there at 7:00pm. If it's crowded, I'll talk to the bouncer (hopefully my friend Mike), and make sure everybody gets in that references my name: Christopher (now the world knows).

If I get a specific number of people I'll call in later today. otherwise I'll be the guy in the blue sweatshirt.

Ok - here's a link (http://www.bowlmor.com).

Getting there at 7 PM sounds like a plan.

See you there!

It does sound like a plan, except for those of us who don't get out of work until 7. But it won't take me long to make the perilous crossing from 43rd and Sixth....

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Pixellent's cheerleeding debut. I'll see you all next time.

You know, I might actually be able to stop by and say hello. Assuming that I ever get out of this office. We had a Big Project Meltdown this morning which has thrown the next few days (and that includes my weekend) into the Fog of Uncertainty.

If not tonight then next time I guess.

I too must give my regrets. My best friend was robbed this afternoon in his store - fortunately, not by violence so he's physically okay. He was tag-teamed: one guy occupied him in the back while the other grabbed almost $200 cash from the front. Friend can't afford either the $200, or a proper, locking register, or an extra employee, especially right before the holiday season (it's his first year so things are tight). Anyway, he needs my support right now. I will hope to see everyone at the next event.

Let me be the first to throw a big <AHEM> to dalovindj, who (unless he was there all along and we didn't see him) missed out on a GREAT night of bowling :)

Thanks, Pucette! Happily, all he really needed was dinner and drinks. He also discovered that there are these cheap, springloaded, locking cash drawers, so he doesn't have to come up with many hundreds/thousands of dollars for a real cash register.

His dad runs a candle factory and has been robbed at gunpoint on numerous occasions, so Jay is counting his blessings. I think it just hit him on a bad day, right as he was paying bills and trying to figure out where rent was coming from.

I'll see everyone next time.

vix, you sex monkey! ;) I had heard the rumors of Pix bowling, but was afraid to believe them without additional confirmation. And the moon didn't even turn to blood!

Damn I missed the bowling, and it was my idea!

Thursdays have sucked for me lately but maybe getting better in the future. Although I did bump into Vix on the subway the other day.

So who won?

The fantabulous lurkernomore power bowled himself into the lead :) Mags, if I may call you suchly, I must say Pix nearly gave TruePisces a fatal asthma attack with his bowling antics. I'll let him give the details if he wants. Wouldn't want to drop the ball or anything.

I'll have you know, Zebra, that we did think of you, and acknowledge that you'd come up with the idea. Maybe next time...

Oh, and glad to hear about your friend, Oxy!

That's it. I'm never bolding another word ever again!

Sorry folks. Wish I was in the mood to join you. I did go, got there like an hour late, and then didn't feel like talking to anybody, so I just grabbed a lane and knocked down some quick ones. I had some fucked up tornado shit come into my life yesterday evening around 5:00pm. Check out my rant (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=85894) for further explanation.

Next time . . .

I remembered as I got off the LIRR in Brooklyn, on the way home to cook dinner. Once I get home, it's over.

Were there any suggestions for week after next?

I have sad news to report to my fellow bowlers... it turns out that the shirt says SEA monkey! Which makes sense, since there's a picture of a surfing monkey on it.

Though considering that I got this shirt at Yellow Rat Bastard, I bet it's no accident that it looks suspiciously different...

I can't surf! I feel like a fraud!

"New Sexy Pants Pixellent"? Christ, it makes me sound like a lewd action figure.

Oh. New Sexy Pants. Pixellent. Two sentences.

Never mind...

"drop the ball". Oh, ha ha.

Did I ever claim that I bowl better than a yak with a hangover? DID I???

You know, I knew there was a reason I kept envisioning you gamboling amid a family of brine shrimp in an aquarium filled with Magic Rocks...

Never mind, Vix. You'll always be a sex monkey to us.

... since Scralden damn it, I was just told of the name change... why am I always the last to know these things??? :( (make that hampster) made it here safely and we're on our way to get something to eat.

A great time definitely was had by all, and those of you that missed it... there really are no words to describe it! Between Pucette's skillful use of scissor's on Vix's butt, to my mad dash for my inhaler after watching Pix's masterful bowling, it was one of the best time's I've ever had with a group of Dopers! I only wish I'd had the video camera readily available...

As for next up, we were talking miniature golf. Anyone know of any that we can try to set it up with??
