Jesse -- that mediocre sit-com that was on NBC for a few years starring {swoon} Christina Applegate.

Tell the truth, I can't really remember exactly how it goes, but I remember thinking how catchy and mainstream it sounded for a TV theme song.

Hawii 5-0 kicked major but, but let's not forget

Route 66
Peter Gunn
The NBC Nightly News theme composed by John Williams used back in the mid-80s. I used to play it to calm my duaghter.

I'd throw in the theme from the old CBS Reports, but since it was "Appalachian Spring" we'll just have to say "adapted from another medium"

Also, Batman Beyond has a cool theme. The opening graphics fit the music very well.

Completists could insist that this ranking should include The Flash, Family Dog, Dilbert, the animated Beetlejuice, and Sledge Hammer. And I wouldn't argue with them. Indeed, I would remind them to put Fast Times (the TV version of the Ridgemont High movie) on the list. But now we're not even talking overall quality, just obsession.

Elfman, Mancini, and Mike Post. TV themes in a nutshell. No, people don't rock-out enough to The Rockford Files. But they should.

"The Bill Cosby Show", 1971 or so. Not to be confused with "The Cosby Show" of the 1980s. Great little Quincy Jones gem, and Bill himself warbles the nonsensical lyrics.

And the absolute classic of this genre is MST3K.

To add (all cartoons....):

Speed Racer ('Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer, he's a demon on wheels, he's a demon and he's gonna be chacing after someone!')

MST3K is hard to beat here. I am not ashamed to say that I know the words to every version of it, and often sing them at random times.

The "Mr. Show with Bob and David" theme is one that I go around humming all day. Now if only HBO and Dakota North would release the DVDs so I can have all the episodes. Rumor has it (straight from David Cross himself!) that they'll be out in time for "Run Ronnie Run"'s release next spring.

The Iron Chef theme is pretty cool too. I think it's actually from Backdraft, though.

"Riverboat ring your bell
Fairthee well Annabell
Luck is the lady that he loves the best..."
"Maverick is the name"

They just had a "Western" marathon on TVLand last week. The "Maverick" theme song is damned catchy. Also, the tune to "Alias Smith and Jones" (also part of the marathon).

also:
"Cheers"
"The Waltons" (composed by Jerry Goldsmith, sigh)
"Now and Again" (nifty sf series just recently screwed over by Sci Fi) has a GREAT theme song. I always made sure I watched the credits - just loved that song.
"Star Trek - Voyager" (Jerry Goldsmith, again. Did you know that "Voyager" won the Emmy instead of "Friends", which it was up against that year? Ha!)
"Farscape" - this theme is starting to grow on me.
Another vote for "Rockford Files".
and, "All in the Family".

Green Acres is the best sing-along, bar none.

And the Bugs & Daffy theme from a few years ago...

(overture, dim the lights, this is it, we'll hit the heights...ya know what hights we'll hit....on with the show this is it!!)

No music ever got a viewer into a better state of mind for watching a show than the whistling tune for the Mayberry / Andy Griffith Show.

No song ever introduced the viewers to the characters and situtation better than Gilligan's Island.

Rockford Files' theme music is so cool, it's on it's own level.

The theme for M*A*S*H always made me snicker because the lyrics are about suicide.

Wonder Woman! Wonder Woman!
All the world is waiting for you!
And the power you possess.
In your satin tights,
Fighting for your rights
And the old red-white-and-blue!

Wonder Woman! Wonder Woman!
Now the world is ready for you!
And the wonders you can do.
Make a hawk a dove!
Stop a war with love!
Make a liar tell the truth!

(ca 1974 funk-horns-piano)

Wonder Woman! Get us up from under, Wonder Woman!
All our hopes are pinned upon you!
And the magic that you do.
Stop a bullet cold!
Make the axis fold!
Change your mind, and change the world!

Wonder Woman! Your a wonder, Wonder Woman!

One minute and forty seconds at the beginning were better than an entire season's worth of scripts!

What about Alice? I always kinda liked that one, especially when I learned that Linda Lavin (a great actress) sang it herself.

And what about MAUDE, for chrissakes?

That uncompromising, enterprising, anything-but-tranquilizing, right-on Maude!

No Alfred Hitchcock Presents, either?

Indeed. MST3K's theme also deserves consideration for its wonderful ending:

If you're wondering how he eats and breathes,
And other science facts,
Then repeat to yourself, "It's just a show;
I should really just relax!"
For Mystery Science Theater 3000!

I liked Courtship of Eddie's Father:

People, let me tell ya 'bout my best friend. He's a warm-hearted person who loves me to the end-duh

and in the younger years, Sesame Street was a definite favorite.
