View Full Version : Age of Moderators?

I was really bored and going through someold threads, when I came across this (bolding is mine):

What with growing traffic on our Web message board and the usual turnover, the Straight Dope needs chat hosts and board moderators. Interested parties should write to tubadiva@aol.com for an application. You must be over 18. A fast computer and modem, a steady head, and lots of free time are big pluses. Not to mention the patience of a saint.

Now, a month or so ago when you guys posted the announcement that you needed moderators again, I applied only to be told that you have to be 21. Why the change? I am not arguing with you, but I'd really like to be a mod, and I think I would be good at it. I spend around 9 hours a day just waiting for people to post to this board. And I don't think too many people would leave if you let me do it! :)

It's frightening how many crazies think that world is going to end in a few days. All of us smart people know that it's not ending until next year.

Sounds like they switched from giving away coffee mugs to giving away beer mugs. ;)

When I saw the title of this OP, I thought a new world order was upon us. The Age of Reptiles, the Age of Aquarius, and some other Ages, such as the Stone, the Bronze and the Iron. Now finally, after many millions of years, the Age of Moderators.

Silly me.

Cess, I think you would be an excellent mod, and I hope I haven't hurt your chances by saying so.

Typo on Ed's part. The age limit for workers in the Straight Dope vineyard has always been 21. It's not to discriminate against our younger members (many of you are SO fabulous!), but because of some of the subject matter we handle, we felt safer with moderators and chat hosts over the age of 21.

Oh all right. But in exactly two years and four months, you will hear from me again!

(Not that I'm going away until then, um, yeah. Nevermind.)

Being a moderator tends to age one prematurely, so a moderator hired at age 18 would find themselves being age 26 within a matter of months... and we wouldn't want to deprive anyone of those exciting early tween years.

So, on that note...did Eutychus change his mind about quitting? I notice that the Help Wanted signs have been taken out of the windows and there've been no changes since the announcement was made.

I ask for purely selfish reasons...I really wanted that damn coffee mug.

Naah, we're still evaluating (and waiting on the tech folks to get their sh--I mean, their act, their act together and come see about us).

We have a nice selection of folks to look at, and we'll be doing that soonest.

Patrick IS to be thanked, though; in the midst of some pretty horrendous personal problems, he's given us great service.
In fact, all our moderators are pretty damn special and I am eternally in their debt.
