View Full Version : What's on your sandwich?

So there you are... sitting in the living room, getting tired of hearing about all the great new TV shows coming up in the next season... or sitting in front of the computer, masturbating and reading the SDMB (hi, Merc!). Or perhaps you're staring at a wall and expecting it to sing. But eventually, you will get hungry. What do you do?
Well, you can either head out to Carl's Jr., or you can make your way into the kitchen for a snack. You pop open the refrigerator, and amid the three dozen cans of pre-whipped cake frosting, you notice that you have some coldcuts.
"Mmm... sandwich..." you think.
So you make up your mind to make a sandwich. What kind of sandwich do you make? Do you stick with the ol' PBJ (mmm... a classic... but only if it's made with strawberry jelly). Or perhaps you slap a few slices of chicken 'tween two pieces of bread and chow down. Or, if you're truly creative (or high), you go for something really exotic.
Me? Well, I'm simple... I put meat and sauce 'tween my bread. It doesn't matter what kind of bread, of course. I slap some mayo on there, then place a random combination of turkey breast, ham slices, and cheese, with each different level holding either mustard, A-1 steak sauce, or Arby's sauce. To finish up, I sprinkle some pepper on the pile of fattening food. I call it the "Three Level Sandwich", because in the amount of time it took to put it together, my youngest brother gained three levels for his character in Diablo II.
So, what's your sandwich, baby?

I lo-o-o-o-ove pepperoni and cojack cheese on white bread. If I'm feeling crazy, maybe I'll add a pickle or two.
Whenever I go to Subway, I always get a 12" BLT on white bread with cheese and mayo. I never get tomatoes, though. Do you know how many times I've heard the 'sandwich artist' say, "Oh, so you want a BL? Har har har!" It gets old after a while, believe me.

If it's animal flesh, and it can fit reasonably well betwixt two slices of any bread, I'll make a sammich out of it. no sauce. no garnish, spice, cheese, ANYTHING.
Bread.
Meat.
Bread.
That's how it's done, baby.

I usually do tuna salad, with extra eggs, tomatoes and chopped carrots instead of the usual pickles. And Miracle Whip, got to be Miracle Whip. I've been putting dill and green onions in my salad recently and that's nummy too.

When I want a sandwich, I drive down to Thundercloud, Austin's superior version of Subway. While I wait in line, I get to listen to whatever cool music the staff has playing, then I order my ham and cheese. White bread, full size, Provolone, please, lettuce and onion, mayo. Maybe a cup of soup if they have cream of potato or red beans and rice. If it happens to be a Thursday, I pick up the latest issue of the Austin Chronicle.
This is my default sandwich. Occasionally, I get the chicken salad on wheat with lettuce. Less often, when I am in the mood to totally disregard everything I know about nutrition, I get the Office Favorite-egg salad, cheese and bacon.

Well, all i have in the dorm is strawberry jam, so I eat a lot of jelly sandwiches.
If I had actual cold cuts, I would have ham, cheese, lettuce, a thin slice of tomato, and the bread would be spread with either mayonaise or creamy italian dressing.

Heh... I just remembered that, as a kid, I'd make sandwiches consisting of two pieces of bread, mayo, mustard, and relish. Nothin' else. I loved those things...
See, I was sick even as a kid.

When I'm not thinking about my cholesterol, I get a nice, chewy baguette, a big hunk of triple-creme brie, a smear of butter, and a ripe sliced pear.
I also love a good tuna-salad, full of onions and pickles, and a slice of avocado, on whole wheat.
Dang. Well, since I'm not masturbating at the computer while reading the SDMB, I guess I'll go make me a sammich.

Usually turkey, lettuce, tomato if I feel like slicing them, and mustard. Tons and tons of mustard, because it makes everything taste better. On the other hand, mayo is absolutely gross. Raw egg whites and vinegar? Not my idea of an appetizing sandwich.

Well, my ideal sandwich is turkey, cheddar, lettuce, onion, an dlots of mustard and mayo. This is what I get when I'm a the deli. When I'm home, and I'm really hungry, the best I can usually manage from my meager culinary resources is mayo on stale french bread.

I have three sandwiches.
Reuben. Ham and cheese with brown mustard and dill. BLT.
Nuff said.

Ideally, it would be fat-free mayo (yeah, yeah, I know, but it's just for lubrication) and a good mustard on whole wheat with colby/jack or cheddar cheese, sweet pickles, sliced hardboiled egg, and sprouts on whole wheat bread. Maybe some romaine lettuce too, if I have any.
In real life, it's whatever I can find, generally swiss or cheddar cheese on whole wheat. Fresh greens are usually an unrealized dream.

One of my all time favorite sandwiches:
Dark Rye (nothing else is the same)
Rare Roast Beef
White Meat Turkey
American or Cheddar Cheese
Lettuce
Tomato
Onion (light)
Horseradish (light)
Heavy Mayo
Heavy Mustard
Pepperoncinis and some potato chips on the side. We're talking major taste bud orgasm here. In a pinch, you can use the marbled rye, but light rye and other breads just don't cut it. Same goes for the cheese, stick to the recipe. Very rare roast beef is preferable to overcooked.
Fortunately, there is a little shop just up the street from my home that makes this sandwich to perfection. Too bad it's miles from my work and closed on weekends!

Any ol' bread with a turkey/ham special hybrid. Not necessarily the tatiest stuff their is but at only 1.39 lb it tastes good enough for me.

With the confidence in immortality only a 21-year-old can have ...
A slice of fake Swiss, random cold cuts, soy sauce, Worchestershire sauce, A-1, sesame oil, garlic power, onion powder, lemon pepper, pinch of ginger, slice of American, all between two slices of the whitest bread I can find in a house full of wheat-eaters. Slather the outsides with butter, coat with Parmesan cheese, and fry in more butter to within an inch of its life.
Mmm, I can taste the heart attack comin'. :D

Dark Bread, either pumpernickel or toasted whole wheat or dark rye
mayo (actual stuff, but not too much. Miracle Whip is for
infidels)
sprouts
avocado
sea salt
swiss or provolone cheese
Dark Bread
mmmmmmmm......
Also:
Toasted whole wheat bread, or fresh baguette
mayo (as above)
turkey from last night's dinner
sea salt
fresh pepper
mayo (as above)
Toasted whole wheat bread, or underside of baguette
cripes, now I'm hungry. This thread is like porn!

Toasted bread? Jeez, I thought the point of a sandwich is to avoid cooking altogether... :D
(Yeah, I've made a few toasted-bread things... mostly on french bread rolls, with butter, parmesan cheese, garlic, and olice oil)

When I was a kid, I LOVED cream cheese and peanuts (not peanut butter, but whole, salted, roasted peanuts) on fresh white bread - all mooshed together so the peanuts didn't fall out. I think I'd still like that...
But my all-time favorite is lightly toasted white bread, mayo, thick slices of tomato right out of the garden, and a little salt. Feed me that, and I'm yours for life... Well, maybe not life, but I'll be your friend.

I don't eat many sandwiches as I have a problem with the effects or is that affects(?) of gluten glue, er bread.
However, I do enjoy a sandwich with lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard (dijon on occasion,) and some kind of meat and occasionally some cheese. Ham is the best. Turkey is too dry. But ham has the right amount of moisture.
Now, on the usual occasion that I want a sandwich and since I don't keep breads around my house, I usually make a few lettuce rolls, rolled up much like an egg roll with the same ingredients with lettuce as the main factor.
Oh and yes, I do love the same lettuce roll up with tuna salad, egg salad and occasionally chicken or ham salad.
Bread and I don't get along.

Usually I'm out of bread, so I mix tuna, mayo and relish and eat it on Ritz crackers.
I did buy bread yesterday though, and for lunch I had a ham-and-swiss on rye with mayo and yellow mustard. Not being especially imaginative yesterday, I had another one for dinner.

I'll take mine on white bread, or a kaiser roll if there is one lacking any sort of fungus accessible. Mix a little tobasco sauce with some ranch dressing (spicy ranch...mmmmm) and slather it on each piece of bread, then stack on two or three slices of ham (any kind except that lips and assholes food lion brand stuff), some turkey, a piece of cheese (any kind), and consume. Occasionally if I'm in a healthy sort of mood I might consider putting lettuce on there, right before I decide not to.
Damn I'm hungry! :)

When I was a kid I made "Dagwood" sandwiches: White bread, Miracle Whip, yellow mustard, sliced, pressed beef (Leo's -- I think it's called Buddig's now), sliced, pressed turkey, Oscar Meyer liverwurst, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion.
Dad liked Spam salad sandwiches. He'd run Spam through the meat grinder and add Miracle Whip and sweet pickle relish, chill it, then eat it on white bread. You're probably saying, "Yuck!", but it was actually pretty good. I almost never make it myself, but when I do it's the only time I buy Miracle Whip or white bread.
I found out how much cholesterol there is in liverwurst, so I don't make "Dagwoods" any more. I can't eat a whole batch of Spam salad myself. So now it's just tuna salad, PBJ, meat'n'cheese (like the ham and Swiss), or a hamburger on wheat.

Two slices of lightly toasted White Mountain bread (from Publix...mmmm), with low-fat mayo spread on each piece, along with some Vidalia onion/mustard relish.
Between these go several thin slices of BBQ chicken breast, some Boars Head rosemary ham, and a few slices of spicy cappy ham. Three more hours for lunch.

All this talk mustard and mayo is making me ill. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE YOU?
This is the sandwich I wish I had:
white bread(toasted)
turkey breast
AMERICAN cheese (none of that fancy foreign stuff for me)
Unfortunately, I am not equipped to make that sandwich. All I have in my refrigerator is three different flavors of pudding. Plus, I have no bread even if I did WANT a pudding sandwich(which I DON'T). Even if I went out and bought some bread(which I'm too lazy to do) or borrowed some from my roommate, I would have to drag out my iron and ironing board to toast it. WHY, you ask? The universtiy policy prohibits the use of toasters, hot plates, coffee pots, and any kitchen appliances with open heating coils, in the dorms for fear that we might burn the place down.
We are, however, permitted to smoke in our rooms.

Hmm, my ideal sandwich would be pepperoni, provolone or swiss, salami, rare roast beef, lettuce, tomato, sweet peppers, oil, vinegar, salt, and mayo on cuban bread. My second favorite is meatball subs with lotsa sauce but I don't get good meatballs often. My mom really does make the best. I like to add oil, vinegar and sweet peppers to meatball subs also.

It's lunch time!
I used to think that a "sloppy joe" was ground meat in some sort of sauce on a hamburger bun. At least that's what they are up here. In New Jersey, however, they are something completely different; namely, the best sandwich on the face of the planet.
Imagine, if you will, white bread, russian dressing, corned beef, turkey, roast beef, pastrami, and cole slaw in three layers, with each of the ingredients taking up a little more than half an inch in height (except the russian dressing). Divine!

There's a deli near my office that makes a 'gourmet'- french roll, ham, cream cheese, avacado, bean sprouts, mayo. mmmm. or sometimes, grilled cheddar cheese and peanut butter. it's not technically a sandwich, I guess, but a quesadilla with brie and mango salsa.

My *absolute* favorite sandwich ever is alfalfa sprouts and miracle whip on dark rye. Peanut butter and frosted Cheerios comes a close second. Don't look at me like that. When you get down to it though, for me a sandwich means 'find some stuff and put it on bread'. As long as it isn't spoiled, it doesn't matter what. You should see some of the combinations I come up with. ~_^

dark rye
brie
sprouts
pepper salami or pastrami
thin slices of dill pickle
old-fashioned (coarse) mustard
dark rye
Assemble as listed. Must be precisely in that order, or the flavours don't blend properly.
My favorite is the Jailhouse Cajun Chicken sandwich:
cajun-spiced skinless chicken breast
chipotle mayo
pepperjack cheese
lettuce or sprouts
tomato optional (none for me, thanks), on a
toasted kaiser bun
Served hot, of course. MMMMMMmmmmmmm. But that sandwich is 600 miles away in my hometown (sniff), so lately I've been eating a lot of ham and cheddar sandwiches, on wheat with mayo and just a skootch of mustard, with lettuce and red onions. In fact, that's what I just had for lunch. :Urp:

Hot sandwich:
English muffin, toasted
Laughing Cow cheese on the muffin
One egg, over easy, yolk still runny
American cheese, melted over the egg in the pan
Turkey breast, sizzled lightly in pan
Salt, pepper, parsley
*drool*
Cold sandwich:
Whole wheat pita bread
Tiny bit of mayonnaise
Lots of turkey breast
Clover sprouts
Baby spinach leaves
Cucumbers, thickly sliced
Tomatoes from the garden, thinly sliced
Chesire cheese, crumbled inside

I recently got a copy of The Moosewood Cookbook, which is simply the greatest vegetarian cookbook ever, in the world. Anyway, there is a whole section of suggestions for sammich fillings, and this has become my favorite:
You take some peanut butter, and mix in some honey. Then you toast some sesame seeds and stir those in. The proportions are entirely up to the maker of the spread.
Put this on some bread, with sliced banana or seedless grapes or raisins or jam or Nutella or just plan, and it's delicious. It's managed ot ruin straight peanut butter for me.

My favorite sandwich is marble rye bread, cold pastrami (though Reubens are not to be underestimated), extra-sharp cheddar cheese, and russian dressing.
One of the best sandwiches I ever had was pastrami, provolone, cucumber and black-olive tapenade on a baguette.
<sigh>
Oh and I LOVE pepperoncinis.

The best sandwich is smoked peppered turkey on sourdough bread. No cheese or sauce or anything, just the turkey and buns. A good breakfast sandwich is a fried egg on lightly toasted sourdough bread woth some butter.
I guess I never realised how much I liked sourdough.

Rye bread with real leftover roast beef, raw onions, tomatoes, swiss cheese, mayo, mustard, Louisiana Hot sauce, and black pepper. Toast the sandwich till the cheese is melted and enjoy.
If I am feeling in the mood for a vegitarian sandwich I will fry up some onions in some butter, add some basil and oregano and cook till the onions are almost ready. Then I will add some sliced tomatoes (the standard beach ball type are the best for this because they will stand up to some cooking) and cook them until the tomatoes warm upi. You do not want to cook them through or they turn to mush, you need some body to them. Then add a healthy slug of hot sauce and stand back...the vinegar will vaporize and a snootful of that will clean your sinuses out for a month. Put on toast and enjoy. You can add cheese to it but it's quite good (and gooey) the way it is.

Today my lunch is 'Boar's Head' brand Rare Roast Beef on a fresh sub roll with smoked provolone, Artichoke Hearts, and Mayo from my favorite Italian take-out joint. A Number 5.
Pretty Good, but I've had better. The best thing about it is the cannoli I have for desert :)
Give me a striaght up grilled cheese with a bowl of good vegi soup on the side and I'm sated.
I also like the waffle sandwiches they serve at Waffle House (what can ya do, I'm from the South).
