View Full Version : Memorable Closing Credit Songs (Films)

I heard U2's "In Gods Country" on the radio today and it made me think of the movie Three Kings, and how much I enjoyed the transfer from last scene to end credits. I guess this post is to ask what "last scene/closing credits" songs have genuinely added to your enjoyment of a movie? I have a short list:

Three Kings, "In Gods Country", U2
American Pie, "One Week", Bare Naked Ladies
Clueless, "Tenderness", General Public
Private Parts, "No Rain", Blind Mellon

I figured if there were any other people who pay attention to this kind of thing, they could be found here on the SDMB. If not, I hope this thread moves off of the first page quickly so the failure of my first OP doesn't haunt me for the next few days each time I log in.

Does anybody remember the song at the end of To Die For? I remeber the scene, Illeana Douglas was ice skating on the pond where Nicole Kidman's body was frozen/buried (I think), but I can't remember the song. Anyone?

I can't believe I had forgotten about There's Something About Mary. Possibly the most I've laughed during closing credits. The Birdcage/We are Family was also a great one.

"Gayane Ballet Suite" at the end of Aliens. This piece was also played during the scenes which showed the everyday life on board the spaceship for Dave and Frank in *2001, A Space Odyssey*. It's a haunting, sad piece which I have yet to be able to dig up anywhere other than on the soundtrack of *2001*.

(You've got to Have ) Friends sung by the still-not-yet-well-known Bette Midler at the end of The Last of Sheila, circa 1972. An unexpectedly nice ending to one of the best and most convoluted mystery movies ever.

The end of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet with Radiohead's "Exit Music (For A Film)". As far as I know, the song was written specifically for the movie and it really fits the somber tone of the movie's ending.

drillrod, I was just about to say that. I've been a Jane Siberry fan for years, and hearing that when I first saw The Crow gave me a near-fatal case of goosebumps.

If you remember the Al Pacino fiasco Sea of Love, you'll probably remember the ending credit song; Tom Waits covering Sea of Love. Only reason to see the movie, IMHO.

I've got that on CD, which identifies it as "Invention" by Aram Kachaturyan (it also has his ubiquitous "Saber Dance," required music for spinning dinner dishes on dowelsticks; and his "Spartacus," which was used extensively in the Hudsuscker Proxy).

I second "Don't Forget About Me" From "Breakfast Club".

Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" (? IIRC - I know it's Barber, anyway) from "Alien".

brocolli! wrote: "it's a long road" from the Rambo credits
Written by my favorite film composer, Jerry Goldsmith! (He did the original "Planet of the Apes", "LA Confidential", "Omen" and about a million others.) Dan Hill sang the song, melody by Goldsmith. (Great score, BTW. All the "Rambo" scores are great. However, I've never seen any of the films, except for the original "First Blood", which I saw once.)

IIRC, The End is not strictly the closing credits song. An audio montage plays over the napalm attack and the closing credits.

I also agree with many of the choices in the previous posts.

I agree so much! Thank you for reminding me of that one! I have a Knopfler CD, and whenever I hear that piece, I am taken back to that film, and think of Reigert sitting, all lonely in his cushy apartment in Texas, missing all his new friends back in Scotland (?). What a great film, what a great score.

"Busload of Faith" by Lou Reed at the end of "True Believer." (1989) Great ending to a great flick!

I think it was "Midnight Special." I know the scene: John Lithgow is all trussed up in a straight jacket and put into an ambulance. Dan Ackroyd is the driver, and pops a casette in the tape player. Lithgow smiles and says, "I LOVE Creedence" just before Ackroyd says, "You want to see something REALLY scary?"

That's Vera Lynn doing "We'll Meet Again" at the close of "Dr. Strangelove." If you've listened to "The Wall" you'll remember the song "Vera" - "Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn?" "We'll Meet Again" was very big in England during WWII.

"Oh La La," by the Faces, closed "Rushmore" IIRC. That one worked pretty well.

Did "Rock Around The Clock" play over the credits to "Blackboard Jungle?" If so, that takes the cake. That blew the lid off the whole damn thing.

"Sympathy for the Devil," Guns n' Roses, Interview with the Vampire--it was such a perfect choice to end the movie on an evilly triumphant note as the revived Lestat drives off with the newly bitten Christian Slater.

"Miss Misery" from Good Will Hunting--Mournful tune appropriate for the end.

"That's the Hell of It" from Phantom of the Paradise
"Good for nothing, bad in bed
Nobody loved you, you're better off dead"--Great stuff!

A couple of favourites:

"I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" at the end (I'm pretty sure it was over the credits) of High Fidelity. I never thought I'd buy a Stevie Wonder record, but after hearing that, I had to track down Talking Book, and I love it, so that was one film that made me branch out in my music tastes.

Also, Arleta's Mia Fora Thimame from the Praise film was a beautiful way to end a kinda downer of a film, and for Dirty Three fans, it was a chance to hear the song that they rewrote as I Remember A Time When Once You Used To Love Me.

Well, the OP says 'good,' but the title just says 'memorable,' so I'll chime in with the memorable end-credits song that sprang to my mind when I read the title.

"The Princess Bride." If the song has a name, I don't care to know it, but they take that lovely love theme that's been echoing through the whole movie and add to it a gravelly-voiced singer and some of The Worst Lyrics Known to Man.

At one point, my college roommates and I could sing the whole thing.

That would be Philadelphia, natch. The singer was Neil Young. Also gets one of my votes.

I also give a vote to Out of My Mind (Duran Duran) at the end of "The Saint" which was a gawdawful flick and was only redeemed by the inclusion of a good song over the credits. I still curse the $8 I blew on that stinker.

Oh, and I just saw Riding in Cars With Boys recently, and I had never realized how incredibly sad the song "Dream Dream Dream" is (by various artists, but I suppose The Everly Brothers were used there). I came straight home and downloaded it.

When I want you in my arms
When i want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is dream...
Only trouble is I'm dreaming my life away

Very memorable.

You might not care to know it, but I'll tell you anyway :>) - the song is "Storybook Love" by Willy DeVille (formerly of Mink DeVille), on the album "Miracle".

Mark Knopfler is credited as writing all the music for the film, except that last song, which is credited solely to DeVille (although I agree that it seems to include Knopfler's theme). He also plays guitar on the entire album. The best song on the album, IMHO, is "Southern Politician" - I love the riff Knopfler plays throughout, and as a "smart-ass northern liberal", I like the lyrics. :>)

As for my own favorites, I definitely second (or third, or fourth, as appropriate) Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" in Dr. Strangelove, Radiohead's "Exit Music (for a film)" in Romeo + Juliet, and ALOTBSOL at the end of Life of Brian, but here are a few other personal favorites:

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me - Cherubini, Requiem in C Minor
Lost Highway - David Bowie, "Deranged"
The Matrix - Rage Against The Machine, "Wake Up"
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - Pink Floyd, "Seamus"
Gallipoli - Albinoni, Adagio in G Minor
Wild at Heart - Elvis Presley, "Love Me Tender"
Last Temptation of Christ - Peter Gabriel, "It Is Accomplished"
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Rolling Stones, "Jumping Jack Flash"

...there are others, I'm sure, but this is all I can think of now.

Also, in reference to the Philadelphia closing song by Neil Young, I believe the official title is "City of Brotherly Love."

I didn't even realize this thread was 2 years old until reading that last post, but since no one mentioned "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins at then end of the movie with the same name, I thought I would throw that in. The way they freeze the picture on Rachel Ward's tear filled face is heartbreaking.
