how does one add links to a thread?

How do my fellow dopers add the links?
I have cut/pasted url's with no sucess.
I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate thread,but a search failed to yield any results.

You can always click the "quote" button under someone's post to see how they did what they did. Also there is a link to vB code in every reply window which will tell you how to do most things. I can link to that by typing:

vB code to get vB code (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/index.php?action=bbcode)

or simply typing:

www.straightdope.com to get http://www.straightdope.com
