This thread goes backwards
Well, I can't top that, might as well end this thread.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-05-2019 10:22 PM

Behold the glory that is the penultimate post.

Beckdawrek 09-05-2019 10:42 PM

Look back here. I'm behind you.

Personal 09-05-2019 10:56 PM

My phone rang and I answered.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-05-2019 11:33 PM

Don't bump this thread.

Isamu 09-05-2019 11:53 PM

I'm thinking about bumping this thread...whaddaya think?

thorny locust 09-06-2019 12:06 AM

What are you thinking about right now?

Biotop 09-06-2019 12:16 AM

Can't we quit dwelling on the past? Concentrate on the present.

blondebear 09-06-2019 12:17 AM

Just becuase there are things I don't remember doesn't make my actions meaningless. The world doesn't just disappear when you close your eyes, does it?

Peter Morris 09-06-2019 12:37 AM

That's the third time you've said that, and it still doesn't make sense.

Smapti 09-06-2019 12:44 AM

FYI, you're replying to a poster who passed away in 2007.

Isamu 09-06-2019 01:07 AM

In case anyone's still interested, the answers to the OP issue are:
1. Probably
2. Yum yum
3. Run!

Biotop 09-06-2019 01:28 AM

Nitpick: Ruapehu erupted in 2007, not 2006.

Seems pretty quiet around here. Maybe too quiet?

I'm past all that.

Kamino Neko 09-06-2019 04:31 AM

Oh, for pete's sake, it's not that big a deal! Is this really the argument you want people remembering you for?

pool 09-06-2019 06:12 AM

In a frying pan you say?

Budget Player Cadet 09-06-2019 06:57 AM

Oh come on, after an insult like that, you think I'm going to stick around this thread? You can stick it in a frying pan, mate.

Go_Arachnid_Laser 09-06-2019 07:10 AM

The idiots who devote themselves to lame puns are just emotionally and intellectually stuck in their infancy.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-06-2019 07:25 AM

Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

Kamino Neko 09-06-2019 07:27 AM

*sigh* OK, this thread will clearly never get back on track until someone takes the bait... I'll bite...Orange who?

Knowed Out 09-06-2019 08:04 AM

So, the issue of whether .999999999999999 = 1 is FINALLY settled! I can hardly believe after 20+ years the debate is finally over and everybody is happy with the resolution. A truly historic moment for the SDMB!

Intergalactic Gladiator 09-06-2019 08:29 AM

Professor, I honestly can't believe what you said back on post #38.

harmonicamoon 09-06-2019 08:50 AM

I am going to post to this thread yesterday.

Cardigan 09-06-2019 08:58 AM

Talk about beating a dead horse. Look, Elendil's Heir clearly summed up every reasonable argument to the contrary that could possibly be made in his post three weeks from now. The rest of you are just repeating variants of what's already been spelled out.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-06-2019 09:02 AM

Cardigan 09-06-2019 09:09 AM

In the first place, I have never personally owned an iguana, and secondly if I did I would make it point to feed it every day and I resent the imputation that I am somehow a "neglectful person." More importantly, though, I should point out NO ONE claimed a volcano erupted there to begin with!!!!!

Go_Arachnid_Laser 09-06-2019 09:10 AM

0.999... or 1. Who cares? The only thing that matters is where the party is at!

I will concede the point. However, that still doesn't change the fact that the colonel wasn't present. If he had been, it's obvious things would have gone quite differently.

atimnie 09-06-2019 09:34 AM

I think it's been proven as fact, but you're too stubborn to concede a point, even when you're obviously wrong.

Budget Player Cadet 09-06-2019 10:03 AM

EDIT: whoops, double post

Budget Player Cadet 09-06-2019 10:04 AM

I honestly cannot believe we're still arguing about this. It's settled math. Honestly.

atimnie 09-06-2019 10:07 AM

Is anyone else double posting? Third time it's happened to me this week.

Fourth time.

Biotop 09-06-2019 10:08 AM

It doesn't mean the bagpipes were actually used to compute fractions. Just because certain people claim to know because the colonel was an iguana owner does not prove anything. As an iguana owner (IIRC) you should know better. They have to eat. And as Elendil's Heir so eloquently pointed out, if you have to go to New Zealand for the food, you go.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-06-2019 10:10 AM

ETA: with bagpipes.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-06-2019 10:11 AM

Although some ignorant savages will no doubt misquote me in the future, I am of the position that music has no place in battle, though are those who will state the fact of Scottish bagpipers ...except highland regiments didn't actually march into battle playing bagpipes in that case

Ponderoid 09-06-2019 10:12 AM

C'mon, it's really easy. All decimals that terminate or endlessly repeat can be expressed as a fraction of two integers a/b. Just tell me what integers a and b result in the repeating expansion 0.99999999... and we're done.

Oh, and who's there?

atimnie 09-06-2019 10:18 AM

You've probably heard this before but... knock knock.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-06-2019 10:21 AM

Intergalactic Gladiator 09-06-2019 10:22 AM

I don't know everyone. This thread seems to be all over the place and I still have no idea what endlessly repeating decimals are tied into utilizing music while in battle.

burpo the wonder mutt 09-06-2019 10:32 AM

Oh, Hell, breakfast is comin' up! 'Scuse me!

Budget Player Cadet 09-06-2019 10:39 AM

Trying to connect battle strategy with obscure maths might be interesting if the maths actually worked... But they don't. I'm sorry, 0.99... is still 1, so the whole theory falls apart.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-06-2019 10:49 AM

Maybe the math isn't obscure enough.... Hmm....

atimnie 09-06-2019 10:53 AM

Careful there, some of us almost got that equation.

Go_Arachnid_Laser 09-06-2019 10:55 AM

And the interesting part, the really interesting part, is that a volcano absolutely erupted in there.

Prof. Pepperwinkle 09-06-2019 10:57 AM

Jamal's Theorem states that the more volcanoes you place within a 200 mile radius of each other, the more likely that even one eruption will set off a chain reaction that might lead to, say, global extinction. Not sure who this Jamal is, though.

Cardigan 09-06-2019 11:07 AM

As to your second point, Elendil's Heir said Colonel MacArthur was an officer who "led his men into battle". It's common knowledge that highland regiments have historically marched into battle playing bagpipes! So the aforementioned connection between music and battle is actually quite well documented.

Lastly, I was referring to the 1945 eruption of Mt. Ruapehu which claimed 150 lives, not the most recent 2006 eruption. My point was that while the loss of 150 lives is tragic, it pales in comparison to all the deaths that have occurred on battlefields during that same period.

Beckdawrek 09-06-2019 12:24 PM
