XKCD Winnipeg shout-out

As a survivor of Winnipeg winters I found today's XKCD What-if hilarious. FWIW, it's not quite as bad as he makes out but Winnipeg winters are somewhat...brisk. I'll have to get my nephew to try this out; it'd be right up his alley.

Poysyn 03-03-2017 07:20 PM

I lived in Winnipeg until 2014 - never was attacked by wolves. :D

Northern Piper 03-03-2017 09:52 PM

That's because they all froze at the intersection of Portage & Main. :)

I live in Fargo and I've never been attacked by wolves either. But there was one year when my wife drove past a moose on her way to work every day.

We named the moose "Olga".

Gorsnak 03-04-2017 07:51 AM

The incessant wolf attacks were why I moved away from Winnipeg.

Also, I foresee that "Outcomes of Scientific Experiments in Canada" graphic being posted on university office doors throughout the country.

ftg 03-04-2017 09:53 AM

I was hoping one of the mouse-overs* would be a My Winnipeg reference.

* Just discovered my spell checker thinks "moues" is a word. And it is. Plural of "moue". This is going to be my Word of the Day.

My sister discovered the secret to a successful Canadian scientific experiment: do your research so far north the wolves would die of exposure before reaching you.

Have you been attacked by Steve Buscemi?

Two eyes and a mouthful of teeth flying in loose formation.

I had a moose run by me when I was waiting for the bus to school one morning. They are just ridiculously big. I did not name it.

Northern Piper 03-05-2017 06:22 PM

I've only seen a moose once, in a slough at the Moose Mountains, appropriately enough.

And I misread it initially as "moose-over".

I wrote a nice post on Saturday about how the wandering were wolves of Winnipeg are beginning to look better than paying rent in Vancouver, but Tapatalk is capricious.

Let me defend the city by saying if it were anywhere with a better climate I would move there immediately. I have very happy memories of living in Winnipeg, but I also remeber the cold. Once I purchased a burger at a drive through and the grease actually turned solid as I was eating it. Within a few blocks I felt as though I was eating a lard burger.

Another minus is the wind. I recall a wind storm where I saw a child's big wheel bike sailing past my third floor balcony.

Did your wife ever figure out where the moose worked?

:p

More importantly, was he accompanied by a flying squirrel?

swampspruce 03-09-2017 09:12 AM

Natasha, follw dis meat eating plant around and see vat he knows!

My wife's school had a moose run through the playground two weeks ago, and doing field work I've seen several wolf packs, things I can honestly say I didn't see in my entire time in Winnipeg. Saw plenty of cougars in Strawberries and the Big A though... :D
Winnipeg has a lot going for it, not the least of which is bragging rights for living in a climate so desperate to kill you. Any maroon can live in Vancouver or TO...

dsal1829 03-14-2017 09:23 AM

The constant reference to wolf/moose encounters, harsh winters and whatnot makes this thread sound like Xkcd's comic #1665: https://xkcd.com/1665/

But were you doing research? Maybe what's needed is the combination of "Winnipeg" plus "researcher".
