Inventor of Hawaiian Pizza Dead at 83

Sam Panopoulos, who was actually a Greek immigrant in Canada.

RIP, Sam. We hardly knew ye. :(

I like Hawaiian pizza myself. It is offered here in Hawaii but not the big deal you might imagine it would be. Here's a poll included to see how Dopers rate Hawaiian pizza.

Procrustus 06-10-2017 11:33 AM

I voted "no," but only because limited poll options. I don't dislike it, but it's not in my top 10 pizza choices. However, I'd eat and enjoy it if was offered to me.

Johnny L.A. 06-10-2017 11:38 AM

Yes. It's not my go-to topping, but I like the sweet-and-savoury of it.

Siam Sam 06-10-2017 11:40 AM

I just wanted a simple Yes or No for the poll options and so did not include gray areas. No willywallying for this.

Snowboarder Bo 06-10-2017 11:40 AM

If "like" means "don't actively dislike", then I like Hawaiian pizza.

OTOH, if there's any other choice, the Hawaiian pizza is going to stay a circle.

Siam Sam 06-10-2017 11:43 AM

I admit to liking it enough to seek it out actively. The wife is not a big fan, but then she does not like pineapple very much in general.

Mr Shine 06-10-2017 11:45 AM

Following the crowd. Hawaiian is something I'd never actively order from a list of pizzas or buy from a supermarket, but if offered to me I'll happily eat it. I answered "no" due to lack of options.

pulykamell 06-10-2017 11:56 AM

Yes. It's not my usual topping, but it is one of my wif's favorites. Back when Domino's was especially bad in the 90s, it was the only pizza from them I actually enjoyed. The sweet and savory gave that lifeless pizza dough and sauce some flavor. (I think they're much better now, though, and they have been promoted from their spot as worst fast food chain ever.)

Okay, I'm curious as to who has the top spot on the list of pulykamell's Worst Fast Food Chains.

Is it Chuck E. Cheese? Der Wienerschnitzel? Cici's? Hot Dog On A Stick?

There's so many possibilities!

Trinopus 06-10-2017 12:05 PM

I LOVE the stuff! Love it love it LURVE it! The combination of tastes is a delight!

Any man's death diminishes us...but he left us a great gift indeed!

jz78817 06-10-2017 12:06 PM

not a fan. It's only certain sweet & savory combinations I like. pineapple on pizza isn't a "gross out" thing or anything for me, I just don't care for it.

G0sp3l 06-10-2017 12:08 PM

It's always sad when a Satanic Pact comes due :(

Pineapple on pizza was, is and shall ever be an abomination!

I agree. I love pineapple in general, just not piled on bread covered in tomato sauce. That is just simply a bad recipe that should not have ever happened. The individual parts aren't guilty but the whole is. I would hate to see Sam Panopoulos's less successful recipes. Now that he is gone, maybe we can stop trying to be polite and drop the charade.

raventhief 06-10-2017 12:16 PM

In my family, i and my nephew are the only ones that are fans. Yum.

Siam Sam 06-10-2017 12:17 PM

So far a majority of Dopers like Hawaiian pizza, while the rest have bad taste.

Ya know, I was at Chuck E. Cheese a couple weeks ago to pick up a free personal pizza for the kids and it was actually not all that bad.

My least favorite fast food chain, now that Domino's is off the list, is one that many people find dear: Taco Bell. Now, I try once every year or two to see if my tastes have changed, but, no. That is, I did finally find one thing I liked from them, but it doesn't seem to be on the menu anymore: that ghost pepper wrap thing from a year or two ago. I mean, I'm the guy who loved the BK whopper burrito, so it's not like I have high standards. (Though, oddly enough, as fast food burger chains go, BK is my least favorite.)

Right on; thanks for checking back in!

No. I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but I don't mind speaking ill of their abominable creations.

silenus 06-10-2017 12:35 PM

I actually prefer pepperoni and pineapple myself.

That is, indeed, a nice combo. Heck, add some jalapeño to that and we're hitting all the flavor sensations!

Chronos 06-10-2017 12:50 PM

Certainly not my favorite, and I'd seldom or never actually order it over other choices, but it's fine.

Miss Mapp 06-10-2017 12:59 PM

I had a Hawaiian pizza delivered to my home earlier this week. I had no idea it would be a sort of memorial tribute to its creator.

Annie-Xmas 06-10-2017 02:12 PM

I'm a vegetarian. Give me an apple and cheese pizza anytime.

Leaffan 06-10-2017 02:17 PM

I'd never order a pineapple pizza, but I certainly don't mind them.

I feel the same way about cats, well, apart from the eating part.

terentii 06-10-2017 02:20 PM

Whenever I have a Hawaiian pizza, I feel like I'm at an Italian luau. Not that there's anything wrong with that.... :o

UncaStuart 06-10-2017 03:03 PM

I actively dislike Hawaiian pizza.

I like Hawai'i, however, so it doesn't spill over.

And onion garlic and cilantro. It works better with chicken imo.

Helena330 06-10-2017 03:20 PM

We had one yesterday. I love them. I wish we had a slice left with which to toast Mr. Panopoulis. Thank you, Sir!

CairoCarol 06-10-2017 03:46 PM

I was extremely dubious before taking my first bite of Hawaiian pizza, thinking, "Pineapple on pizza? That's gross!" But when I tried it, I found it was actually really good.

quimper 06-10-2017 04:26 PM

Pineapple, habanero, hot capicola, prosciutto ends, pecorino romano and smoked paprika on a no-knead crust baked in a cast iron pan.

What Exit? 06-10-2017 05:23 PM

Well as long as you asked ...

Nasty crap is Hawaiian Pizza. I hate it and I hate the idea of it.

Other way round for me -- I actively dislike Hawai`i, but have no serious objections to Hawaiian pizza.

(My favourite pizza is pizza quattro stagioni.)

AHunter3 06-10-2017 07:06 PM

Pineapple doesn't belong on pizza. On the other hand, pineapple doesn't belong in a vast range of other things either. I like it all by itself, freshly cut and not ensugared or otherwise trammelled, but IMHO it doesn't play well with other foods.

Yeah, OK, piña coladas get a pass.

So, you like piña coladas?

I like it well enough. We usually add green olives for a little salty flavor which goes well with the sweetness.

This. Pepperoni is my go-to topping, but adding pineapple to it is a delight, when I'm feeling particularly edgy.

Driver8 06-10-2017 09:49 PM

I like pineapple on pizza, particularly in the "Hawaiian" combination with ham. I grew up with South African chain pizza, and my impression moving to America was that US chain pizza had far more limited topping selections, and seemed to have more strictly adhered to traditions about what makes an acceptable topping. South Africa seemed to have less of an issue with just taking a full meal's worth of ingredients and dumping it on top of a crust. I kind of like that.

So I have no sense of wrongness about any ingredient on top of a pizza. I like pineapple on pizza. Interestingly I don't actually like plain pineapple or pineapple in most dishes. But on pizza I find the overly tart flavor is cooked out of it and the sweetness generally compliments the other flavors.

That was my first experience back in 1977, when friends introduced me to it.

When I was in London in December 1994, I stopped in a pizzeria next to Leicester Square, I think it was. I was amazed at some of the toppings they had. I tried a slice of corn and tuna pizza; must say, it didn't do much for me. :(

The pizza I once had in Venice (Italy) on the other hand, was sublime. Baked in a real wood-fired brick oven with Roquefort cheese and Parma ham. Yum-O! :o

jasg 06-11-2017 01:16 AM

No. If I am going to diverge from tomato, pepperoni & mozzarella, I will go with bacon, BBQ chicken & alfredo sauce.

Roquefort or blue cheese will even make Celeste frozen pizza delicious.

In Thailand, it's not hard to find pizza with corn, peas and/or carrots. Yuck! Especially at the local Narai chain.

actualliberalnotoneofthose 06-11-2017 01:56 AM

Almost every pizza place (pr premade/frozen) I've ordered actually has a different version of Hawaiian pizza, so I'm not sure what we are calling it. Yeah, there's pineapple but it seems everyone uses a different "ham" and sometimes a difference sauce or other veggies are standard. In general I like the kind that uses "canadian bacon" and doesn't do anything weird with the sauce or add any spicy peppers or anything.

DesertDog 06-11-2017 07:29 AM

Nope. Pineapple tidbits is right up there with anchovies on my "does not belong on a pizza" list. My favorites are pep and black olives (they hold up better than mushrooms IMHO) and ham (or Canadian bacon) and fresh tomato (diced or slices, either way).

The latter (with the CB) was offered as the "Iditarod" at a local pizza house where I used to live. They later changed it to "Yukon" presumably because not enough people knew from Iditarod.

Mean Mr. Mustard 06-11-2017 07:48 AM

Pineapple is my favorite fruit.

Pizza is my favorite pizza.

But no.

I will eat it if it is the only option, but only then.

mmm

Spice Weasel 06-11-2017 08:12 AM

It's all I ever order.

Bless this man.

enipla 06-11-2017 08:35 AM

I like it quite a bit. My Wife not so much. And half Pepperoni, green olive, artichoke hearts and onion (our go to pizza) / half Hawaiian is just kinda weird.

That makes no sense. The reason anchovies don't belong on pizza is the same reason that drywall doesn't belong on pizza: neither anchovies nor drywall are made out of food.

Pineapple doesn't have that problem, and is delicious on pizza. Here, chez '99, we don't get to order it because kaylsmom doesn't do well with tomato sauce on pizza, and prefers a nice garlick-y Alfredo sauce (or facsimile thereof).

Scumpup 06-11-2017 01:33 PM

People who enjoy pineapple on pizza are hopelessly broken. I feel sorry for them and for all the pizzas they've ruined.

Trinopus 06-11-2017 02:07 PM

I like Hawaiian pizza...and I like anchovies, too.

(Have never actually tried both on the same pizza... Hm........)

Pineapple and anchovy is my favorite two-topping pizza -- but since few people share my enthusiasm for it, I usually opt for the Hawaiian combo as part of a group, since that still misses it pretty close in the "salty and sweet" category.
