The Meaning of IANAL

Does anyone ever interpret the acronym IANAL as a sentence, reading thus: "I anal" [I am anal] ?

It would be funny if someone else reads it as I do.

That's pretty funny. It's actually IANA - "I am not a" and then the next letter is whatever position applies to the comment. IANAL could be "I am not a lawyer" or "...a lepidopterist" or "I am not a lemur..."

Your Mileage May Vary. A reference to auto makers' disclaimers on reported fuel economy, it's used to warn that something which worked for the writer may not prove successful for everyone, or in all situations.

Yes, I sometimes see it as "I Anal". I rarely, if ever, use it, as such. I generally do "IANA <whatever>".

If we're doing a primer on acronyms, you'll also see IMO and IMO, pretty often. I use those two more often than INA. They stand for In My Opinion, and In My Experience.

I have an acronym question for everyone. I've been looking for the appropriate thread for a few years now not feeling this question actually worthy for it's own.

What do the letters TMI actually stand for. I know it means that either something gross or something sex related will be found within the thread, but I have always been curious what the letters actually mean.

Heh, you think the I anal thing is bad, go read a wedding MB. I tend to think of acronyms in their medical context, so the first time I saw a thread titled "BM problems, please help!" I was non-plussed to say the least. And you don't even want to know what I thought about the thread titles "Let's see your STD's."



[For those who don't know, in a wedding context BM's are bridesmaids, and STD's are save-the-date cards. I'd never heard of save-the-date cards before, so that one took a while to figure out.}

They asked me straight faced how many people were out on STD.

You know, I wanted to know this too, recently. I'm a bit of a lurker, as you can see, so it was with much trepidation and quickened heartbeat that I actually started my first thread.
