Ghost in the Shell—What's The Major's body made of?

I've got a minor anime/manga question. In Ghost in the Shell, what is The Major's prosthetic body made of? I mean, obviously, there's quite a lot of inorganic material and equipment, but what about the "fleshy" looking parts, like skin and muscle? Is it some kind of bioengineered tissue, or just realistic looking synthetic stuff?

That's...it, I guess. (Except that I really have to stop putting off getting the manga.)

IIRC her bones are titanium, and her muscles are carbon tubes/fibers of some sort; they double as armor.

Whatever she's made of, she's unable to float in water without artificial aid.

Didn't she start as a real person, who got more and more artificial through time?

Indeed—she apparently received her first "prosthetic body" as a child, retaining only her natural brain. (Or part of it, at least. From what I remember, by the time of the movie and whatnot, she doesn't even have all of her original brain. I don't know if that happened after the original cyborging, or at the same time.)

The second season of SAC is supposed to have an episode where we find out why she ended up becoming a cyborg in the first place. But that's all I know.
