When some animals are more equal than others.

Could we at least make some pretense of equal treatment on this board? Not to dwell on ancient history, let me focus on the two most recent cases:

-OpalCat insults someone outside the Pit. Thread locked, no action.

-Sampiro drags the snarkpit into discussion. No action.

Pitting of the previous goes along for 4 pages so happily that it even gets accused of being sappy. Sampiro jumps at the last second and makes a mess of himself and Tuba decides everyone needs a break.

I think it is perfectly normal that some people are more popular and better liked than others, and I understand that modding is done by humans, but I think it would still be nice if the rules were applied a bit more equally and popular dopers didn't get free passes on their misteps.

Just saying.

How is calling for a time out a free pass on a mis-step? Do you look for this stuff?

I've seen lots of threads where a poster is warned re insulting someone else and the thread isn't even closed.

It's threads like this that make me glad I'm not a mod. Why would anyone want to re-stir this shit? You and Sampiro don't get along. Great. Whatever. Let it go.

Read the story about sour grapes sometime. Or go outside and breathe the air. Read a book. Get a life.

Know the story well. Don't see the connection. Please elaborate.

I did go outside, cooked dinner, bought and assembled a swingset for the kids, watched five episodes of the first season of Heroes, took a shower, ate dinner with my BIL (who lent me his truck for the swingset), watched cartoons with the kids, put them to bed.

Then I came back and saw TubaDiva close a thread before couldn't avoid having to warn someone for being a jerk and decided to post. Isn't this what the Pit is for?

You just couldn't miss the point any further that this post.

This has nothing to do with Sampiro.

This is not about someone being warned and the thread not being closed.

Please read before you post.

This is about the haphazard way the rules are applied here. If you have anything to say about this, I am all ears.

Sapo, I understand that the focus of this thread isn't ire directed toward Sampiro anymore than it is at Opal. However, it is unfortunate (since that's the case) that those are the examples you chose to you. Perhaps you can find some more, that others don't feel you personally are connected to.

That said, it's been my observation that it's simply a perceptional thing. Like how you notice all makes of cars on the road right after you've bought your own. When I first became a member here, I bought into the whole 'clique' myth. The reason that was is because the members who were supposed to be a part were really strong personalities with very up-front opinions. They registered more and in turn, had to be one of THEM.

Just my humble opinion.

I did read it. You may or may not have a point re the arbitrariness of some mod rulings, but this comes so quickly after the disaster of your recent Pitting, that the two must be related. In fact, you cite it as "evidence".

Go swing on the swing-set. I mean that nicely. No major contributor that thread comes out looking good. Let it go; take your complaint to PM/email with the mods. If you get an unsatisfactory reply, then come and start a Pit thread about the issue.

How often does the staff have to explain that nobody reported the offending post?

The general basis of Sapo's ire is, as I understand it, Opal did something wrong, wasn't warned for it, and this indicates favoritism on the part of the moderating staff.

Yet the staff has explained more than once that no one reported the post, and have indicated that if the post had been reported, it likely would have garnered a warning.

I guess I don't understand how anyone can have a problem with that. If the lack of warning about a post offends you, and you haven't reported the post, you have have to shut up about it. Or report the post. Then you can whine.... er, discuss... all you want.

How do you feel the staff should have handled the situation? Are you saying the thread should have been left open? Closed sooner? Sampiro should have been warned (and if so, for what)?

I'm not speaking for the OP, but isn't there a rule against bringing stuff to this board that happens somewhere else? Sampiro was hashing, rehashing, bbqing, boiling, broiling, baking, digging up & then burying, denouncing, denigrating, and having hissy fits over things from another board.

We do discourage bringing off-board arguments onto the board, but I don't think that means we should make every reference to the snark sites a warnable offense. Clearly, enough people know about and are interested in these other sites that it's going to leak over here a little. We'd like to minimize this, of course, but not to the point of strapping on the jackboots and throwing around warnings any time someone obliquely refers to "other places". (Well, not yet, anyway. )

I also think Sampiro was wrong to bring up the snark sites in response to CarnalK's criticism. However, he didn't exactly start a board war or encourage others to go over there or point to something that was said over there, so I didn't think his post merited a warning. In the context of his post, the other site was more the history behind their conflict than the source of a new issue, in the same way people who argued at a Dopefest might refer to it in a later Pit fight. Still not great to bring up here, but not quite the same as someone trying to foster interaction between the two sites or bringing a current off-board issue on-board. So that's why no warning. In retrospect, I probably should have stepped in with a Mod Note early on, but by the time I checked back in the snark discussion was in full swing but (mostly) pretty civil so I took a hands-off approach.

There's no rule against talking about other boards. The rule is about linking to other boards and starting board wars, nonny.

But hey, at least you're popular over there. I suppose that makes you a winner in nonny's book.

I'm very familiar with your first case, as are you. After all, you were one of the first posters in The Flying Dutchman's thread, which asked for a ruling on whether Opal's transgression was allowed outside of the Pit. And, you were the first to bring up the "some are more equal than others" meme. As a matter of information, let me quote you

Nice assumptions, but, (GAWD! I want to say "AS USUAL") you're wrong.

I and two other Moderators/Admins allowed as how we would have warned Opal if we had ever received a "report this post" about it or if it was read by a moderator in the normal course of reading threads. But, I assume you finished reading the Dutchman's thread and yet still feel that there was some unfair monkey business going on which favored Opal because she's a long-time member and we mods/Admins act with prejudice only against noobs.

What do you want me to do? Go back days after the incident, to a closed thread, and stick in a warning? Would that satisfy you?

I'm only talking about that first case. I've not read much of your second case, so draw no inferences from my post.

[Ross Perot]Aw Lord I ain't b'lievin' this...[/Ross Perot]

What Exit? called me a liar, I got pissed. I didn't kill a baby, I didn't really mean for him literally to meet me in Weehawken, NJ [though I'm told it's lovely] with flintlocks, and I'm really not currently stabbing myself with a crucifix and vowing vengeance. I don't think any other Doper would have been warned or suspended or whatever else you think should have happened for getting mad when somebody calling them a liar. As much as I admit to being a drama queen even I am just tired of this whole damned matter, can we please drop it?

Walks away muttering "And to think it was all brought on by you going to talk to that Academy Award winning lesbian..." in his best Golde voice.

PS- This thread several months ago, ironically entitled Read me quick, by morning I will have disappeared!, lasted for days and had 236 posts. The snarkpit wasn't just mentioned, it was mentioned throughout it, it was pretty much the primary focus, it was talked about by me and by you and by Carnalk and by Diosa and by practically everybody who dropped by for a look-see, there was name calling all around, and nobody was warned. Perhaps you've forgotten it.

Sapo and lobstermobster, you're both intelligent and witty posters and it's a shame to see you both dragged into the "I'm being oppressed because I'm not a Charter Member" crying game. I thought you were both better than that.

Back when the board went pay-to-post, there were arguments that we shouldn't get special titles because newbies would later think that we were getting special treatment. I dismissed that off-hand back then. I thought it was ridiculous on its face. Sadly, it turns out I was wrong.

Okay so I get this evite to a party in Nashville hosted by this girl I went to high school with and haven't seen since HS graduation. Well it wasn't just one party there were several "parties" and we were supposed to respond in our RSVP which one we would be attending. I guess Miss Fancybottom hadn't gotten the memo that I don't live in Nashville anymore. I notice the guest list includes several people from HS I do still talk to.

So anyways she is HELPING US OUT by giving us an opportunity to load up on stocking stuffers by presenting a fantastic variety of Arbonne products!!!!!!

First of all, we're 24 years old, why the fuck would I need stocking stuffers? I am not in the stocking stuffing stage of my life. Second of all, what a bitch hitting me up out of no where when I clearly haven't spoken to this person in years.

So I respond to the evite that I won't be attending and leave the comment "I live in California but good luck with your pyramid scheme"

She sends me this email first bitching me out for saying something rude in a public space where she is trying to scam on her guests/friends/targets.

So dopers, what say you? was i being rude?

"Help! Help! I'm being oppressed!"

Someone had to say it.

On topic - yeah, I think Opal was over the line. I have no opinion on the Sampiro mess because, well, I have better things to do than read that trainwreck. I'll say one thing though, Sapo, I think oldtimers do get passes that n00bs don't get, but my guess is that is because the mods are familiar with the oldtimers, and they have a feel for their personalities. An old-timer who has 10,000 good posts and then posts one borderline post isn't going to get the same hand-slapping as a n00b who comes in both guns blazing. Or not. Maybe they just throw darts at a dartboard to decide who gets a warning and who doesn't.

No, I don't believe there is such a process. That being the case, your second question is pretty much unanswerable.

Wait a minute here! Are you honestly calling for moderators to publish the PMs they send people chastising them?! Are you calling for a "public spanking" for each and every infraction, instead of them contacting people via PM/e-mail sometimes to tell them to settle down? It isn't for you or I to know what might, or might not have been said privately to anyone acting up. Get over yourself!

Ah screw it. I don't need or want an answer to my last post. I had something else on my mind that I can't quite articulate at the moment.
