Game rules:

1. The following rules must be strictly adhered to. Accidental rule breaks must be reported immediately to the game host. Failure to comply will result in a last warning or an immediate Wrath of Demon (expulsion from the game), depending on the severity of the rulebreak.

2. Private communications are legal in this game.
You may converse freely off-thread in whatever manner you please, unless you are dead. See rule 5.

3. SCREEN SHOTS ARE ENTIRELY FORBIDDEN. You know why, it breaks the game. Don't ever do this.

4. You may not quote your role PM. You may claim a character class, or alignment, or element, or claim a special power, or just make things up. But you cannot reveal your role via copy and pasting any part of it. In other words, use natural language to discuss who you are, don't discuss your role in a severely out of character way, such as:

"The first line of my role PM says..."
Even if you're paraphrasing.

"The third letter of the fourth line is..."
No. Don't do this.

What's acceptable?
"I'm a level 3 fire mage".
That's fine.
 • Still not sure? Ask me privately. Discussing this matter publicly is too OOC and I will ignore any such questions in-thread.
5. If you are dead, you may NOT talk publicly or privately unless explicitly told that you may by me, the game host. Almost all of the time, this is game-breaking and entirely illegal. Your ability to affect the game is restricted while you are dead. Being dead has many bad side-effects, being unable to talk or vote effectively being just some of those.

6. During the day, you may cast a vote for whatever is being voted on, always the lynch, and usually an item. During the day, you may have other actions that you can choose to do, and you may send your command to the game host so it may be executed. Always send this in via private message, and by no other means.

You may vote for a player to be lynched, vote "No Lynch" so that no one is lynched, or vote "present" or "abstain" to indicate your continued activity in the game, but otherwise not affect the game tally.

7. During the night, you may send in a night action command to the game host. Always do this via private message, and by no other means. You are allowed to discuss strategy at night.

8. Being dead does not mean that the game is necessarily over for you. It just restricts your ability to play it.

9. These rules may be amended at any time to include something I overlooked. Should they be amended, I will announce it publicly, and in big fat letters.

10. Regarding Askthepizzaguy- Although I am in some ways involved in the game, I am not a participant and under no circumstances can I win the game. I cannot be lynched.

============================
PLEASE DO NOT POST ANYTHING YET

Role PM's are being sent out. Don't discuss your role prior to the game opening.

How To Play guide

Experience Level:

 • Certain players begin with more experience than others.
 • Certain character classes are more advanced than others and cannot be reached by level 1 or 2 characters.
Experience Level Up:
 • Any round where you place a vote during the day, and do not switch character classes, you are awarded one experience level. You do not have to successfully lynch a mafioso or use a special ability.
More experience levels as a certain character class allows you to switch to more advanced classes. However, this is not across-the-board; you might advance far as a mage, but that does not mean you can easily switch to an advanced fighter class. You will have to backtrack a bit to get to the more advanced fighter classes from a mage class, and vice-versa. Some exceptions may apply.
 • More advanced classes will generally have more abilities and higher Hit Points, therefore it is desirous to become an advanced class.

Alignment Shift:

During the day or night, you may perform an action which affects the karma of your character. Good or lawful actions may shift you in that direction, unlawful or violent actions may shift you in the other direction. Note that townies can turn Good, Neutral, or Evil, and that Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic aligned characters can all be townies.
 • Alignment affects what sorts of classes your character can become. Lawful characters cannot become every class that a chaotic character can. Purely good characters cannot become every class either.

Good <---> Neutral <------> Evil

Lawful <------> Neutral <------> Chaotic

Shifting Magic Alignment:

Mage-class or magically inclined characters may have the ability to change the elemental god which they serve, renounce the protection of one element and embrace another. This may take the place of a different action.
 • Elemental protection can serve to help or hinder you against certain forces.
Wind, Earth, Fire, Water, Light, and Shadow are the 6 known elements in this game. None are inherently good or bad.

Light

Fire ______________Wind

Earth
______________Water

Shadow

 • Fire deals double damage to earth, normal damage to wind, half damage to water.
 • Earth deals double damage to wind, normal damage to water, half damage to fire
 • Water deals double damage to fire, normal damage to earth, half damage to wind
 • Wind deals double damage to water, normal damage fire, half damage to earth.
 • Light deals double damage to shadow, half damage to fire and wind, normal damage to others.
 • Shadow deals double damage to light, half damage to earth and water, normal damage to others.
Magical damage and physical damage are different- some forms of protection can stop one kind of damage, but not the other.

That said, damage taken reduces hit points, and any kind of healing will restore hp damage of any type.

Change Classes:

Characters generally begin as a Soldier or a Mage.
 • Soldiers become fighter classes, support classes, and clerics, among other things.
 • Mages become Wizards, White and Black mages, among other things.
Most classes can switch back to being a soldier or a mage. A mage can become a soldier, a soldier can become a mage. Mage versus soldier is the main division in classes.
 • There are some classes which cannot be discovered through experience. Some are naturally endowed with special powers and are therefore inaccessible to all others. This is for game balance.
To switch character class, you must first have a class available to switch to. At all times you will be informed as to which classes are accessible at your experience level and alignment. When in a character class, you will be informed which classes you can change into and what criteria must be met for the switch to become accessible. Example, an alignment switch to neutrality may be required, not just a certain level of experience. As the game progresses, the requirements for each class will become slowly known to all players, most likely. The abilities of each class will also become known, most likely.
 • To switch to a class which is accessible, simply PM the game host and the switch will be done. You cannot switch classes again until the next round.
 • To switch to a class which is inaccessible but the requirements can be achieved through experience gain or alignment shift, simply PM the game host your intention to switch to the new class. You will then be told what you need to do in order to meet the prerequisites and how long the change will take.
 • If you do not know what the prerequisites to change to a class are, then I cannot inform you what you need to do to change to that class. It may require several class changes or it may require information you're not personally privy to. As such you cannot gain new information by asking me about character classes.
Goals

Some characters may gain additional motivations for their own personal success. This does not necessarily mean they are working against the town's goals, just for their own as well. Some others may gain additional motivations which do conflict with the town's goals.

In such a diverse group of strangers, not everyone will see eye to eye on how best to proceed.

Complicated? Remember, it's still just a mafia game. The game can be won without bothering with any of this. If you are town, just lynch the guilty scum and you win.

Wrath of the Demon Lord- rule

If thou shalt miss three voting rounds without explanation to the game master, even on nonconsecutive rounds, thou shalt be removed from this life, and the next...

If thou shalt be away from the game due to "real" life, then inform thy game master and thou shalt be granted a reprieve.

If thou shalt not wish to play anymore, because thou art a mortal weakling and cannot withstand the pain any longer... boo fricking hoo. I do not allow suicides. Thou may abandon the game in a manner not unlike a plucked chicken, but thou wouldst remain alive for others to massacre at their leisure.

Or were you suggesting that Jon-participants would be a better target for any Town wannabe attackers?

It is the year 10,432...

in the Age of Iron.

The Parmigian Kingdom spans three continents, having acquired new territories in a war to repel an invasion from the south and the east. The people of this land are not yet fully assimilated into the Parmigian culture, nor do they always follow Parmigian law. However, ever since the King of Parma, also known as the Parmigiano Reggiano, became the ruler of this lands, the people have not seen war, only prosperity. What would be a fractured and divided place is now a nation, united under the banner of their respected King.

The Kingdom is powerful, and has a grand army which defends its borders to the North, and especially to the West. Due to the recent conquests, little more than town watch and a few scattered garrisons exist in the South, which are capable of little more than keeping the peace and the rule of law. Much of the vast territories here have not even been visited by the King of Parma, due to their size and scope. The terrain is rough, and some of the mountain ranges are impassable. The southernmost peninsula exists in near-perpetual twilight due to the vertical slopes, with just a few hours of direct sunlight at mid-day.

There is a settlement in the middle of an ancient, dormant volcano... a vast, fertile plain surrounded on three sides by sharp peaks, while the southernmost range has sunk into the ocean due to the spreading of the continents. A river flows from the north, and passes by this settlement, and spreads out into a magnificent delta, depositing itself into the southernmost sea. The land is so rich that the farms require little sunlight to yield crops of unmatched quality. It is on this shadowy plain that an important event in the history of Parma is about to occur.

The King's seers have shared a terrible vision, and foretold of a great evil which will rise.
While the prophecy is not specific, it has been foretold that a tremendously evil force will rise against the people of this kingdom, and that the unseen summoner or summoners of this force are motivated by the desire for limitless power. It has also been revealed that the mastermind behind this attack is a traitor to the kingdom, not an outsider.

As such, the king has asked for skilled warriors and practitioners of magic to step forward and join him on the field of battle, in the place where his fortune-tellers have predicted that the first disaster will strike. The king has promised to reward them all very, very handsomely for their efforts should they succeed. The first order of business: preparing a defense. The king has already dispatched many knights and skilled workers to build a
fortification stocked with supplies for the adventurers. This fortress will allow the adventurers a place to rest and recuperate after their journey and prepare for whatever awaits them, without endangering the nearby town itself.

These adventurers are not an army. Many of these are simply skilled mercenaries motivated by
greed and the promise of reward. Others feel it is their sworn duty to protect the defenseless. Still others have joined simply for the experience of an adventure and the chance to test themselves in battle. Some of these adventurers harbor a deep-seated distrust for others who have joined this group. Not everyone here is in this for anyone else but themselves. Many of these adventurers hail from races that despise one another and have been in a constant state of war for centuries. And there's also the known traitor within their midst. This group must walk the fine line between cooperating effectively, and being too trusting. Alone, they are vulnerable. Together, they are strong... but the enemy is within, and must be stopped.

The King of Parma has called on neighboring nations to send representatives, for the evil that lurks here is said to threaten all the lands of the greater realm. Few have responded, but surprisingly enough, Parma's great rivals to the West and North have dispatched several skilled warriors. Their existence on this journey has been called into question by Parmigian loyalists, who suspect these outsiders of having other motivations. A few others from the East have also joined in.

The journey was a long and treacherous march through unforgiving terrain, but at last, the King and his guard, and the band of adventurers have arrived on the great Twilight Plain.

The nameless town, simply called Town, lies in the center of this valley. The people here are peaceful, and loyal to the King, even if they are not native to the Parmigian homelands. Their town is defenseless, except for the nearly fortification which is still under construction. The band of adventurers makes camp inside the fortification for the night.

In the morning, the King will announce his defense plans for the Town. But for now, the weary adventurers get some much-needed rest....

Begin "The Night Before...."
(Night Zero)

OOC:
Night Zero has begun. No actions will take place tonight, however you may converse amongst yourselves. In the morning, something will happen which will set things in motion. Night Zero will end in approximately 24 hours and some minutes, or
17:00 (5:00PM) Eastern Time (GMT-05:00, US & Canada)

Game Thread is now Open for discussion.

 • As soon as you meet the prerequisites, you may switch at any time. However, if you are using an ability which is only accessible by your current form, the switch will take place at the end of that day, or night, whichever the case may be.
 • Your experience level will not decrease.
 • You may request to become the new class ahead of time for as soon as it is possible to do so, and I will make a note of it. If you do not receive an updated role PM when you have met the prerequisites, please remind me.

Because assault is illegal, it is an unlawful or "chaotic" action, and therefore not on the lawful path. However, alignment shifts come from repeated and intentional breaking of character. Sometimes justice is required. Sometimes it becomes excessive.
 • It should take 2 actions which break alignment to push you in a given direction.

 • Correct, you must gain three experience levels if it says +3.
If it makes note that you must be a certain alignment, and you are not of that alignment, you must perform lawful or chaotic actions to switch; good or evil actions to switch. Which actions are lawful or chaotic, good or evil? It should be apparent, but if not, you will see as the game progresses. It is my intention that you play with limited information about your destiny.

I wonder if this is implying a traitor as in the mafia role sense( a separate mafia), or a godfather (who investigates town)

@ choie, thank you. I can see how a character can be a mixture of good-neutral-evil and lawful-neutral-chaotic. In relation to this game, does it have any significance to gameplay other than the roles/powers one can aspire to? Can a townie be evil and chaotic? Is that a bad thing and, if not, could scum be good and lawful?

although i am fairly familiar with D&D, i trust our host when he says that it won't be an advantage. that said, the D&D alignments will likely limit your class choices but i don't think it implies mafia alignments.

I think this is pretty explicit. My mafia alignment and class alignment are clearly distinct entities.

It is the year 10,432...

It is the sixth day of the sixth month. The morning has not yet come.

Skillet- Monster
The secret side of me, I never let you see
I keep it caged but I can't control it
So stay away from me, the beast is ugly
I feel the rage and I just can't hold it

It's scratching on the walls, in the closet, in the halls
It comes awake and I can't control it
Hiding under the bed, in my body, in my head
Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

My secret side I keep hid under lock and key
I keep it caged but I can't control it
'Cause if I let him out he'll tear me up, break me down
Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

The King stirs, unable to sleep. The foretold battle is about to commence. Resting seems pointless, so he gets up and puts on his armor. His royal guard and trusted entourage escort him to the site they have prophesied to be where something is about to happen. Surveying the great volcanic plain, the soil black as midnight, the King feels the air begin to chill, and the wind begin to whistle through the valley. Then all is calm, and the sun begins to brighten the sky, even from behind the mountains. The King is ready for whatever is about to happen. He looks toward the Town, wondering if the townsfolk are aware of the great deeds that will be done to protect them, deeds done by men of virtue and valor, knowing not their names or faces.

There is a bright flash behind the King, who turns and sees the last of his guard being obliterated. A lone figure remains. The cloaked being turns to face the King, with a wry smile on its face.

"You.... you've been behind this all along!" accused King Askthepizzaguy.

The cloaked figure began chanting quietly, something in its hands began to glow.

"What are you.... what's happening..." the King fell to his knees in pain. He could feel something.... something was consuming him from the inside.

"Hatred.... Pain.... Suffering... Power.... and Fear."

The King dropped his weapons and began to scream with madness... and soon, the scream became inhuman.

The dull roar became louder, and louder, until it reverberated throughout the shadowy valley. And IT grew to an immense size, towering above any structure in the whole of the valley. IT was a creature not of this world.... not of this dimension... a being of unimaginable power, and unstoppable strength.

IT was larger than life, and IT was consumed with hatred, for being woken from its slumber. IT wanted only one thing: Revenge. And nothing would stop it. The first victim would be the pathetic one who summoned it from Hell.

But the cloaked figure stepped forward, and held up its hands, shouting a deafening command to the Demon Lord, binding the creature with unseen magic.

"THOU MUST SERVE."

The Demon Lord began to roar with unimaginable fury, and prepared to obliterate the small being at its feet. The Summoner's hands began to glow brightly, and the first light of the sun began to shine down on the valley from behind the pointed peaks. The Demon shook the ground as it reacted from the shocking pain.

"THOU MUST SERVE!"

The Demon only became even more enraged. By now, the Summoner had disappeared back inside the Fortification, and the band of Adventurers had scrambled to meet the horrible creature in the field of battle, wielding what armor and weapons they could grab.

The Demon Lord turned to the mass of little things running toward it, and decided that they would be the first to be annihilated... and then, every other living thing in this universe.

It is the year 10,432...

It is the sixth day of the sixth month. The sun is beginning to set.

Godsmack- The Enemy
Hey Mister, backstabbin' son of a bitch
You're livin' in a world that'll soon be dyin'
And I know everybody knows you try to be like me
But even at your best as a man, you couldn't equal half of me

I am realizing that everybody's lost their simple ways
And now that it's here, I see it all so clearly
I've come face to face with the enemy, the enemy

You, you're another shit talkin' punk to me
You're a living inspiration for what I never wanna be
And I see you've been blinded by what you believe
And now back up and sit down, shut up and act like you need to be

I am realizing that everybody's lost their simple ways
And now that it's here, I see it all so clearly
I've come face to face with the enemy, the enemy

Come to me, come to me
The enemy come to me, come to me

So predicting you're the reason why I lie
Simple decision took me too much time to fly
Oh, checkmate

I am realizing that everybody's lost their simple ways
And now that it's here, I see it all so clearly
I've come face to face with the enemy, the enemy
Come to me

The group is unsure what to make of this massive, hulking beast. But without thinking twice, they can sense that it is hostile, and they charge to meet the Demon Lord on the field of battle.

"You are fools, if you think you are prepared to face me as you are. You're not even close to a threat to my power..."

Nevertheless, they tried to attack. But the Demon Lord was so monstrous, so powerful, and towered over them so, that they were mostly frozen with FEAR.

A few brave souls decided to attack. One of their weapons makes contact.

Lord Phere takes 80hp damage.

The great Demon Lord barely flinches. The blow doesn't even faze the massive beast, but another plucky Adventurer approaches, and takes another swing.

Lord Phere takes 80hp damage.

"HA HA HA HA HAAAA....

I SUMMON FOUL BEASTS FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL, TO PLAY WITH YOU FOOLISH ONES!!!

HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!"

The ground began to shake violently, and from beneath the earth came a horde of demonic creatures, an entire army of hellish fighters.

The Demon Lord Phere just stood back and laughed, as the Adventurers set to work defending themselves against this violent mob.

In the melee, some of the Adventurers were wounded. But in the confusion, they could not tell who was attacking whom... in fact, most of the damage was self-inflicted.

Was it by design? Or was it accidental?

Nevertheless...

Lightfoot takes 25hp damage.

"Hey! Cut it out!" Shrieks Lightfoot.

"I'll protect you, Visorslash!" shouts someone else.

Inner Stickler takes 75hp damage.

"I'll protect you, BobArrgh!" shouts another.

Glee takes 13hp damage.

"I'll protect you, Visorslash!" shouts Inner Stickler. "Woah! What the hell is that?" he says, diving out of the path of danger. A magical orb hits Visorslash directly in the chest.

Visorslash takes 100hp damage.

"Yes, pathetic weaklings, yes... taste but a TINY FRACTION of my extraordinary POWER!!!"

ToeJam takes 50hp damage.

"I'll protect you, Inner Stickler!" shouts someone else."Yowza! Maybe I shouldn't have done that!"

GuiriEnEspana takes 50hp damage.

"Now, I will finish you off... come closer, that I might annihilate you!"

Faced with the overpowering might of the Demon Lord, and weary from dispatching his summoned army of violent creatures, the Adventurer group orders a full retreat.

But before they do, they ask one to stay behind and distract the Demon Lord, that they might escape.

"You stay behind, Gadarene!" they shouted.

"No, I'd rather stay with you guys if that's all right..." he said, hesitantly.

"You can't seem to decide, so I'll decide for you! BWAHAHAA!!! THIS ONE, THIS ONE MUST DIE!!!"

"EEEEEK!!!!" Shouted Mosier. "Why do they always pick on the new guy!?!"

*CRUNCH*

Mosier, not Gadarene, was slain by the Demon Lord.

The rest of them escaped.

The Aftermath:

Upon inspection of his remains, they noticed that Mosier seemed to be dressed like an ordinary Soldier, and there was nothing sinister about him. Reluctantly, they were forced to conclude that a Good Adventurer was sent to his untimely demise.

A couple notes from the recap of the Day's fighting...

Lord Phere takes 80hp damage.
We can assume that one of these attacks was by Visorslash (see Post 75), correct?

And the other is by an unknown assailant?

Here it appears that Inner starts to protect Visorslash, but either changes his mind, fails, or is somehow prevented. the color makes it seem that he changed his mind, but I don't know how much we should read into color. Certainly it is significant, based on other games Pizza had modded, but I don't know how detailed we can expect it to be here.

"Magical damage and physical damage are different- some forms of protection can stop one kind of damage, but not the other."

Inner's protection probably had no effect on the "magical" orb.

Oh well, the order of the statements in the dusk color was pretty clear to me and I mentioned my bemusement at the transparency of the (successful?) Day protectors but not the attackers. Short of serving as an alibi or as an attempt to discourage Day protectors, I've no idea why this information is publicly available. I doubt it relates to role or alignment. Anyone?

IMHO the only info it (may) provide us with isn't alignment, but allies. And even that's not necessarily the case. Did Inner attack Visorslash because he likes him as he said? Or did he do it because they're scumbuddies? Or maybe Inner just thinks Visor is a fellow Townie. Or maybe Inner is scum and knows Visor is Town and protected him as a cover.

Ditto any of the protector/protected pairs. It's such un-useful info it's almost worse than no info -- it's potentially damaging disinformation.

If you take the order at face value ( I do not)

Lightfoot takes 25hp damage.

"Hey! Cut it out!" Shrieks Lightfoot.

"I'll protect you, Visorslash!" shouts someone else.

Inner Stickler takes 75hp damage.

"I'll protect you, BobArrgh!" shouts another.

Glee takes 13hp damage.

"I'll protect you, Visorslash!" shouts Inner Stickler. "Woah! What the hell is that?" he says, diving out of the path of danger. A magical orb hits Visorslash directly in the chest.

Visorslash takes 100hp damage.
see someone was going to protect visor, Inner takes damage, someone will protect Bob,Glee takes Damage, Inner will protect Visor (sort of_dives outta the way) and Visor takes damage.
then 3 other players take damage

Visor had 2 protectors?- I don't think cause and effect are listed in order

It is the year 10,432...

It is the sixth night of the sixth month. The sun will rise in several hours.

Hollywood Undead- Been to Hell
Welcome to a city that'll bring you to your knees
It'll make you beg for more, until you can't even breathe
Your blindfold is on tight, but you like what you see
So follow me into the night, cuz I got just what you need
We're all rollin' down the boulevard, full of pimps and sharks
It's a motherfuckin' riot, we've been dying to start
You better grab a hold cuz now you know you're falling apart
You thought these streets were paved in gold
but they're dirty and dark

Been to hell!
I can show you the devil!
Down you fell
Can't hold yourself together
Soul to sell
Down here you live forever
Welcome to a world where dreams become nightmares!

In the belly of the beast, I'm a wolf amongst sheep
At the bottom of the hill, but at the top of the street
Above the boulevard, schoolyard, victim of deceit
And you're running hard, but this wolf it's always at your feet
Yeah you've seen it all before, but the wolf's outside your door
And you're old enough to run, you ain't hiding anymore
Another victim of the star spangled banner of the street
Now you're in the world of the wolves
And we welcome all you sheep

You need to wake up and face it
So you can taste my reality
Now you're stuck in this place you hate
And you came here so happily
Then it made you lose your faith
And that's what fucked with your sanity
Say goodbye to your soul and say hello to your vanity
Hollywood is your friend, and the undead are your family
We'll take you to the edge, and turn your regret into agony
And I'll never let you go, cuz I know you'll come back to me
I'm the reason you came here, I'm the American Tragedy

Been to hell!
I can show you the devil!
Down you fell
Can't hold yourself together
Soul to sell
Down here you live forever
Welcome to a world where dreams become nightmares!

The Adventurers retreat back to the relative safety of the Fortification. Knowing that they must face The Demon tomorrow, even if they wished to escape, they attempted to find rest. A few vigilant guards kept watch over the others.

Visorslash was on his way back to his quarters, when he was attacked suddenly and without warning. The blow landed, and knocked Visorslash to the soil, spilling blood everywhere. The frenzied attacker left quickly.

Visorslash takes 100hp damage.

PetW noticed someone approaching him from behind, and turned to face the intruder.

A powerful beam of magic shot towards PetW, who instinctively tried to block the attack however he could.

Somehow, the beam was completely deflected. PetW was still alive, and the intruder seemed to have vanished.

PetW takes no damage.

GuiriEnEspana felt a warm glow of light surround his body. In a matter of minutes, he felt better than he was before.

GuiriEnEspana recovers 50hp.

Glee was sleeping soundly, when suddenly, an explosive force knocked the roof and walls completely off of his quarters, and blasted Glee completely out of his bedding. He looked up and saw the terrifying Demon Lord... somehow, the creature had managed to sneak inside the Fortification!

"COWER BEFORE ME, WRETCHED ONE!!!

YOUR FEAR IS JUSTIFIED, FOR DEATH AWAITS YOU...

WITH BIG, NASTY, SHARP, POINTY CLAWS!!!

Now FIGHT ME, or DIE like a coward!"

The Demon Lord swings a massive blade, obliterating the bed and sending shattered pieces of the floor everywhere.

Glee is cornered, and has no choice but to fight. He wields his spear, and charges at the Demon Lord.

The Demon Lord swings his blade again, shattering the spear, and breaking every bone in Glee's arms.

The mortally wounded Glee is sent flying into the inner walls of the Fortification.

"Foolish bug. You go squish now!"

*CRUNCH*

Glee was slain in battle.

Inner Stickler hears the massive booming noises, and rises from his bed. He witnesses the final moments of Glee's life, and looks up... and up... and up... and sees the Demon Lord standing before him.

"It's always darkest before the dawn... but, it's even darker before your DEATH!"

Inner Stickler finds himself gripped by overwhelming darkness.... and cold....

The sound of demons drowns out every single thought in his mind.

A cold oblivion surrounds Inner Stickler... madness... blindness... and fear.

The insane nothing consumes Inner Stickler, until nothing remains of him.

Inner Stickler was slain by magic.

The Aftermath:

Upon inspection of his remains, they noticed that Glee seemed to be dressed like an ordinary Soldier, and there was nothing sinister about him. Reluctantly, they were forced to conclude that a Good Adventurer was slain.

There was nothing left of Inner Stickler, so they searched his quarters, or what was left of them. Upon inspection of his journal, they concluded that Inner Stickler was an ordinary Soldier, and there was nothing sinister about him. Another Good Adventurer was slain.

Upon Mosier's body, they found an Emerald Ring.
Upon Glee's body, they found a Blue Pendant.
Inside Inner Stickler's quarters, they found a Sapphire Ring.

Please use Purple so I can easily track this.

DAY BEGINS:

As day dawns, the survivors discuss the possibility of simply trying to escape. Their leader, King Askthepizzaguy, was gone, and replaced by a horrible monster, and they were no match for Lord Phere.

However, they looked over to the horizon and saw the Demon Lord casting a powerful spell.

The valley, the mountains, and the sea itself began to disappear from sight.... the ground broke apart and dissolved all around them, until only the sun in the sky, and the Fortification, and the nearby Town, remained.

It had to be an illusion, but nonetheless, there was going to be no escape from this place... Lord Phere would see to that.

It is the year 10,432...

It is the seventh day of the sixth month. The days seem to get longer and longer...

Pantera- Walk
Can't you see I'm easily bothered by persistance
One step from lashing out at you...
You want in to get under my skin
And call yourself a friend
I've got more friends like you
What do I do?

Is there no standard anymore?
What it takes, who I am, where I've been
Belong
You can't be something you're not
Be yourself, by yourself
Stay away from me
A lesson learned in life
Known from the dawn of time

Re-spect, Walk, what did you say?
Re-spect, Walk, are you talking to me?
Are you talking to me??

Run your mouth when I'm not around
It's easy to achieve
You cry to weak friends that sympathize

Can you hear the violins playing your song?
Those same friends tell me your every word

Is there no standard anymore?
What it takes, who I am, where I've been
Belong
You can't be something you're not
Be yourself, by yourself
Stay away from me
A lesson learned in life
Known from the dawn of time

Re-spect, Walk, what did you say?
Re-spect, Walk, are you talking to me?
Are you talking to me?
No way punk

Are you talking to me?
Walk on home boy

Lord Phere had gone to great lengths to keep them all where they stood, separating them all from the rest of the universe.

The Adventurers wasted little time charging into action. The Demonic creature did not appear the slightest bit concerned.

Normal Phase looked up into the sky and noticed that something was heading in her direction. Reacting quickly, she shielded herself, deflecting the blow.

Normal Phase takes no damage.

fubbleskag did not even see the attack coming. Fortunately for him, someone else did.

"I've got your back, fubbleskag!" shouted Normal Phase.

A glittering bolt of energy struck home, and vanished in a flash of brilliant light. Normal Phase looked at herself, and saw that nothing happened.

"...Yay."

Normal Phase was both grateful and puzzled.

Normal Phase takes no damage.

"You miserable dust mites are more pathetic than I ever imagined. Can't even kill each other properly!"

Lord Phere
laughed.

"Here, taste more minions from the depths of Hell!"

A group of gremlins wielding pitchforks and daggers surrounded the group, but Visorslash took the brunt of the damage.

"ACK!!! Get off of me, you disgusting creatures!"

Visorslash takes 50hp damage.

An orb of magic whistled through the air, slamming into Visorslash and knocking him to the ground in a daze.

"YEEEOUCH!!!"

Visorslash takes 100hp damage.

A ferocious blow struck Visorslash just as he was trying to get up off of the ground. This one was particularly powerful, nearly breaking the poor lad in half.

"Help me!!! Somebody PLEASE help me!!!"

Visorslash takes 150hp damage.

Choie was too close to the action, and failed to see the weapon swinging in her direction.

"Oh bloody hell!"

"Nevermind that, Choie! I'll protect you!" shouted GuiriEnEspana.

The blow struck home, leaving a devastating wound on Guiri.

"I'll... uh.... I'll just be on the ground bleeding, I guess... don't mind me."

GuiriEnEspana takes 80hp damage.

ToeJam didn't see the attack coming. In fact, he barely noticed it had happened at all.

"Who's there? Someone want my attention? Speak up, it's only polite!" he laughed.

ToeJam takes 25hp damage.

A magical glowing light surrounds Visorslash.

"Oh, thank the Gods! I feel a bit better now.

Visorslash recovers by 100hp.

A second glowing light envelops Visorslash.

"YEAH! That's the stuff... thank you, whoever you are!"

Visorslash recovers by 100hp.

"NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOU TO MAKE YOUR PEACE WITH THE GODS, FOOLISH MORTALS...."

The Adventurers had slain the summoned hell creatures, and now faced the Demon Lord himself. Many of them answered the call to arms, and charged in. Others stood at a safe distances, watching their comrades in action.

A magical bolt of energy struck the Demon Lord in the chestplate, barely penetrating the armor.

Lord Phere takes 100hp damage.

Another blow was struck against the Demon Lord.

Lord Phere takes 25hp damage.

A flurry of weapon strikes continued.

Lord Phere takes 70hp damage.

And another.

Lord Phere takes 80hp damage.

"IS THAT ALL?? YOU ARE ALL PATHETIC!!! Now you will experience but a small fragment of my power..."

The order to retreat is given, but one of them is ordered to stay behind.

Astral Rejection
turns and faces the Demon Lord alone.

"Demon Lord! I am Astral Rejection! You have slain your last, for I, Astral Rejection, will send you to your doom!"

The Demon Lord advances on Astral Rejection, saying nothing.

"Repent for all that you have done! Begone from this realm! Go back from whence you came, and show your face here no longer! So sayeth I, Astral Rejection!"

The Demon Lord stands before Astral Rejection, pausing momentarily.

"....Right! You should hesitate, for I, Astral Rejection, am no mere mudpuppy. I have twice the strength of any ordinary man! I, Astral Rejection, am skilled in both the ways of combat, and of romance! I, Astral Rejection...
THINK FAST!!!"

Astral Rejection aims and fires his weapon quickly, scampering away while making a Zoidbergian woop woop woop sound.

"WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP!!!"

The arrow deflects harmlessly off of Lord Phere. Astral Rejection doesn't even make it out of sweating distance of the creature before he's turned into an impact crater.

*CRUNCH*

Astral Rejection was slain by Lord Phere.

The Aftermath:

Upon inspection of his remains, they noticed that Astral Rejection seemed to be dressed like an ordinary Archer, and there was nothing sinister about him. Reluctantly, they were forced to conclude that a Good Adventurer was slain.

The items from the previous day were distributed to their new owners.

OK, let me try another topic.
My first character was night-killed. Was there any reason to pick me?
I had declared I was a Soldier with an item.
Here are the relevant (slightly shortened) posts for analysis (including one by Weedy, the only 'very evil' character so far:

and continue
Unvote NAF1138
*I have no reason to choose him, except we've talked here in the past.

The rules for this game are complicated, but I'm trying to get the most out of them.
I have this magic item (and others may well have similar stuff.)
The item may well be important, but I don't know what it does.
Others may know, so I ask for help.
Certainly doing nothing about the item until the game ends isn't going to help.
The primary function of the Town is to lynch traitors.
However Day One is the time when we have least information.
I haven't seen anything worth mention (just cheese jokes, pseudo-cryptic analysis; minor feuds...)
If somebody hasn't posted near day end, I'll vote for them. Even if they're Town, they're not contributing.

Either way I find it pretty suspicious that someone who voted with no reasoning behind it has strong enough reads to choose to defend someone, or enough supporters to get defended, unless they were Scum.

I didn't attack the Demon either.
2. I've already declared I'm a Soldier.
(I also would like my Pendant identified, but don't have enough money to pay for it. And unless someone protected me, perhaps it's a Protection device?)
3. Unless a Townie (or three!) comes forward to claim they cast the last-minute lynch votes, I assume it was the Traitor(s) and therefore they were protecting their own. That means the one or more of the leaders of the lynch voting just before that are traitors.
4. From my D+D experience, I assume the Demon is unkillable by us.
There is also an alignment change for certain attacks.
If I (Lawful Good Soldier) attack the Demon Lord, do I change alignment?
How do I heal my damage?

I want to draw your attention to what happened when Lord Phere was summoned. It appears light, and perhaps (by inference) light magic may damage the demon lord.

Certainly finding and lynching the summoner will hopefully deal with the demon, but if we damage the beast itself, perhaps it will not be able to hurt us quite so much?

As long as I'm here I feel like some baseless speculation about the color. I remember someone wanted to know how likely it was that the color means anything and I don't know if anyone responded. IMO it is very likely that it does. Maybe even to the point of adding direct clues to the game's solution, though if history is any guide, those clues will be missed by absolutely everybody. At any rate:

Quote:

The Parmigian Kingdom spans three continents, having acquired new territories in a war to repel an invasion from the south and the east. The people of this land are not yet fully assimilated into the Parmigian culture, nor do they always follow Parmigian law. However, ever since the King of Parma, also known as the Parmigiano Reggiano, became the ruler of this lands, the people have not seen war, only prosperity. What would be a fractured and divided place is now a nation, united under the banner of their respected King.

OK first just some speculation about color. I'm trying very hard not to run afoul of the no-handshaking rule, but I don't think it's crossing any line to observe that not all alignments in a typical role PM are the same color, right? Good is blue, for instance (write-ups), but elements are various colors and so on.

The King is referred to as Green pre-transformation, while (see below), the various border areas are
Teal (North)
Red (West, suggested as especially dangerous), and
Black (South, suggested as rather anarchic).

Quote:

Quote:
[i]While the prophecy is not specific, it has been foretold that a tremendously evil force will rise against the people of this kingdom, and that the unseen summoner or summoners of this force are motivated by the desire for limitless power. It has also been revealed that the mastermind behind this attack is a traitor to the kingdom, not an outsider.

So the location of the conflict is the anarchic South, but the main antagonists (or antagonist, though I do expect a more or less traditional scum team despite the grammar) may be linked to the red West. (or maybe not -- see below) One of them -- the mastermind -- is not an outsider, though, suggesting some kind of godfather. Perhaps this person will show Alignment: town to anyone trying to find out, maybe they'll always turn up good and/or lawful even if they're murdering every night, maybe something else, I don't know.

[Actually this just occurred to me, but in a game I just ran recently, which Pizza played in, I had a serial killer who got to kill by proxy (controlling someone else), therefore remaining undetected in that way to any watchers, trackers, roleblocker and so on (I didn't have a detective.) This game has an explicit and open proxy in the form of Lord Phere. So maybe that's it or part of it.]

Quote:
As such, the king has asked for skilled warriors and practitioners of magic to step forward and join him on the field of battle, in the place where his fortune-tellers have predicted that the first disaster will strike. The king has promised to reward them all very, very handsomely for their efforts should they succeed. The first order of business: preparing a defense. The king has already dispatched many knights and skilled workers to build a
Quote:
fortification stocked with supplies for the adventurers. This fortress will allow the adventurers a place to rest and recuperate after their journey and prepare for whatever awaits them, without endangering the nearby town itself.

These adventurers are not an army. Many of these are simply skilled mercenaries motivated by
greed and the promise of reward.

Ok, this fits with what Visor and Gad have said about the third party victory condition. This indigo color faction is more or less townies, but with the unfortunate failing of valuing their own skin too highly.

Quote:
Others feel it is their sworn
Quote:
duty to protect the defenseless.

The basic town. Just get rid of the bad guys. Blue faction.

Quote:
Still others have joined simply for the
Quote:
experience of an adventure and the chance to test themselves in battle. Some of these adventurers harbor a deep-seated distrust for others who have joined this group. Not everyone here is in this for anyone else but themselves. Many of these adventurers hail from races that despise one another and have been in a constant state of war for centuries.
I have no idea who these guys are nor any idea how their win condition(s) might relate to town's, but the suggestion is maybe one or two PFKs or quasi-PFKs; plus others who just need to get rid of each other. Color green for all of them.

Quote:
And there's also the known traitor within their midst. This group must walk the fine line between cooperating effectively, and being too trusting. Alone, they are vulnerable. Together, they are strong... but the enemy is within, and must be stopped.
And the traitor's faction shown in red.

Quote:
The King of Parma has called on neighboring nations to send representatives, for the evil that lurks here is said to threaten all the lands of the greater realm. Few have responded, but surprisingly enough, Parma's great rivals to the West and North have dispatched several skilled warriors. Their existence on this journey has been called into question by Parmigian loyalists, who suspect these outsiders of having other motivations. A few others from the East have also joined in.
Now here's where it gets confusing, the overlap between factions and nationality. I don't know where to go from here without running afoul of handshaking rules. But It may actually be probable that the traitor's allies come from all over and could be superficially in any given faction.

Quote:

I would read the frick out of this as a sword and sorcery novel. You know, in case you ever want to get into genre fiction.

So leveling. This is interesting as well as the switching classes. We know that some roles are incapable of switching as they're needed for game balance. I wonder how many people who can switch classes are already planning to do so and how the game will be affected if by Day 3 or so everyone who can switch has become a mage or what-have-you.

I am totally paranoid already I am going to enjoy myself though. The last D&D game I played was 30 years ago whilst studying for a chem path exam.

OOC-
If several people become the same class, then the powers which accompany that class will be harder to rid the group of. If people decide to explore every possible avenue, the group will gain access to more and better powers as a whole.

It is not strictly necessary to explore every possible class. It's not necessary to level up, change classes or magic or alignment, or even perform any day or night actions. The game can be won by the vote alone. How you all choose to play this is up to you.

A blank sheet is your future, and you have many different pens.

Yarg! Well met fellow adventurers!
My friends, Romanos, countrymen, lend me your ears!

We must band together to defeat this unseen evil that threatens our delicious empire of Parmigiano Reggiano. The forces of Gouda must triumph over these unseen Edamned Muensters and deadly Gorgonzolas that threaten our lands, seas, and Skyr.
I know some of you have abandoned your Cottages', some of you- humble Farmers', saying goodbye to your Buxtom Blue wives, others- nobles, artisans, and others are just simply vagrants that have come to the Margerines of our borders to assist with the cause and prevent the crumbling of our cultures to the wheels of time.
I like many of you dream of cheddar days, but now I have come here to face my destiny! Asiago not quietly into the night, but I go loudly and boldly with you all, my fellow compatriots! We are not alone in this task, the enemy may wish to provolone we fall, but together we are a Formaggi-able force to defeat any threat to us! Let none drive a wedge between us all, or slice us into small shredded forces. We are a solid block, and more powerful united! Remember it is always the most colby-fore the dawn of a new Day, and Toma-rrow our task brie-gins with the first Monterreys of light! So ask what Nacho lands have done for you, but what you can do for your lands! This is not the time to delay in Limburger or pungent purgatory but the time to be decisive and take action! We cannot have any Weisslackers in our party, nor take the time to Greve' our fallen, lest the enemy cry Havarti, and let loose the stale dogs of war!

We. Shall. Triumph!

I was all set to do a proper "You have my sword!" pronouncement, but it looks like the King has fucked off to sleep already. Way to ruin a dramatic adventure trope, your majesty!

Last I heard (herd?) he was settling in Catan crying out, "I've got wood for sheep!"

For those who don't know, Settlers of Catan is a boardgame based around trading various goods back and forth. Also, I was fed this line. Thanks, anonymous witticizer!

Romano is a type of cheese and in this instance is functioning as a pun on the opening line of Antony's famous monologue from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, "Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears. I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil men do, yada yada yada." It's a ripping good play; give it a go sometime when you have an hour or so to kill.

Hi.

At the moment we're in Night 0. ATPG has announced that Day 1 begins around 10pm tonight.1 I expect we'll learn when Day 1 ends when Day Dawns.

ToeJam - you been buying out-of-date cheese? I still remember your shoe problems caused by bad cobblers.

1When I'm talking, assume times are BST. As I write, it's 12:30am or so.

Harpier cries tis time, tis time.

Tis time to get back to the game, I think. I'm always accused of fluffing in the game thread. I forget who's played before, who's new and who's visiting from other sites, so I thought I'd do a quick rundown of mafia terminology that I'm familiar with and that I would expect to see people using in the game.

Mafia/scum: The villains and the main threat to town. Sometimes known as wolves.

Town: All of us, except for the hidden scum. Sometimes known as villagers.

Third Party: Solo players who can win with either town or scum, they must either survive the entire game or fulfill a win condition separate from town and scum's.

Plays for Keeps, or PFK for short: Like Third Party but steals the win from town or scum.

Cop, or Seer: Investigative role that can determine name or alignment of a targeted player.

Doctor, or Angel: Protective role that can prevent harm from befalling a targeted player.

Vigilante: Town role capable of performing a kill, usually at Night. Day vigilantes, obviously target during the day, mandatory vigilantes must kill every [unit of time specified by the moderator], one shot vigs have only one opportunity to kill in the game.

Masons: a group of two or more townies that knows each other is town aligned.

Roleblocker: Can be town or scum. Prevents a targeted player from using an action.

Redirector: Can be town or scum. Redirects an action from its intended target to one of the redirector's choosing.

Serial Killer: Common PFK role. Can kill every night.

Scotsman: Town role that can survive a kill attempt.

LTL: Lynch The Lurker. A general rule of thumb that people who lurk should die.
LAL: Lynch All Liars. A general rule of thumb that all liars should die.
WIFOM: Wine in front of me. From The Princess Bride and is a commentary on situations where there is no way to logically infer what action another player has taken or will take.
FOS: Finger of Suspicion. A way to let someone know you think they're scummy.
OMGUS: Oh My God, U Suck. Voting for someone because they voted for you.
Policy votes: Having a policy like LTL or LAL and voting for someone because they violated it regardless of the circumstances, i.e as a policy.

Note: Many of us have a convention of referring to real days and nights as days and nights and game days and nights as Days and Nights. So if you see weird capitalization, that's why.

Cue the hordes of posts explaining something terribly important that I've left out or misunderstood.

Could someone do the same thing for the D&D terminology? I've never played and I'm not seeing an obvious equivalence between D&D terminology and mafia terminology and I don't know if this stuff is obvious to everyone else or if part of the goal of the game is to find out.

- experience allows you to advance a class which gives your character extra powers, what's a Mage, Wizard, White Mage, Black Mage, or a Soldier, fighting class, support class or cleric in mafia terms? Or is that discovery part of the game?
- what happens to a townie who's alignment shifts to evil? Do they become scum?
- what's the difference between evil and chaotic?
- what's the purpose of magic alignment? What damage do fire, earth, water and wind do to Light and Shadow? Nothing?

Good is a point of view, Anakin. The sith and the jedi, are similar in almost every way, including their quest for greater power...

Quote:
- what's the difference between evil and chaotic?
<-----This guy is chaotic. He's smiling because he just stole a bunch of priceless artifacts. He might intend to give them away to orphans, or he might intend to keep them for himself, depending on what his conscience tells him to do. But he doesn't care for your silly laws against stealing.

<-----This guy is evil. He's smiling because he just killed several people, and he really enjoyed the experience. Now, his morality might tell him that his actions are more than justified, especially considering the circumstances you're all about to be in, but that doesn't matter much to the folks he killed. And it may or may not be true. Most evil people do not consider themselves evil, they consider their actions just and correct, for them. Again, good is a point of view to these people.

Quote:

Standard damage, no modifiers.

Also please note, I have played DnD all of twice in my life, and I'm more creative than familiar. So this will be a game that reflects how I'd design things, not necessarily DnD canon.

If I may also throw in my own knowledge of Terminologies, it may be out of date, GoodStickler, but these were conventions in my times. Let them also aid us in our quest.

LyLo- Lynch or Lose- considered the "Last Day" of the Mafia game- when the game is reduced down to an even number of scum and Townies/other roles- such that if the Scum is NOT lynched and a townie is lynched, scum will either win the game by sheer numbers, or by the additional NK at night thus putting them up and ahead of the town.

Mass Claim- the idea that everyone should reveal their roles/PMs.
Smearing- the act of accusing/wording a post to attack another player/cast suspicion on a player without outright saying so. Also known as "smudging".
Cuddling/Snuggling- the act of saying positive things about a player in an attempt to curry favor/make them look LESS suspicious.
[u]Gastard- The idea of the Moderator being a Bastard- usually bucking some traditional convention of Mafia games, by throwing in an odd twist or post restriction or part to the game. Some of the games previously described by Pizzaguy were definite Gastard-Mafia games.
Bussing- the act of one scum voting/accusing another scum- "throwing him under the bus" effectively, in order to gain more credibility as a Townie player. Used with the effect with the phrase "Scum wouldn't do that" quite well.
Hammer- The act of "Hammering" a player- is to cast the final/last vote onto a player, usually used to define the last vote, but some variations have it as the critical vote that pushes one player to be lynched over another.
Godfather- "Alpha Wolf"- usually the "Head" scum, often in traditional mafia as having the ability to investigate as a "townie" to cops, or having some additional power vs. their scum brethren.

I thought the "hammer" was a reference to an optional rule employed by the game's mod, whereby s/he decided at the start of a Day that if someone reached (X) votes that person would be lynched, whether or not the Day was over or not.

I guess that's not a huge distinction from your second definition, but... I just wanted to clarify to see if my understanding was correct.

It's both and I imagine ToeJam omitted it since it appears ATPG is not using such a rule in his game. I am more familiar with its use as a voting mechanism as well.

I, BobArrgh, am but a humble player of Mafia games,
and though I have played in four, or mayhaps, five such tourneys,
have not been in battle since the time of the previous vernal equinox.

I have received a summons from my liege, the King of Parma,
and have pledged to assist him in any way I can,
though my head sometimes seems filled with straw, or even rocks.

And now that we are assembling in this place, I am pleased
to be reacquainted with fellow travelers with whom I have shared
many a laugh over wine and toast, as well as bagels and lox.

I look forward to hearing the tales of fortune from days gone by
and to joust mightily against those scurrilous Scum who threaten
our town and those Wolves who seek to slay our flocks.
